This is pretty cool

I’m not a member but only because we never drafted the papers. I intend to be once I move into my next apartment because we’ll be there for more than a year hopefully.

what happens to your fic after you die?

It depends. Like anything else on the internet, it could just sit on the Archive forever.

But if you want something more than that, then you might want to look into a Fannish Next of Kin (FNOK). This is a person you choose to get control of your account if you’re ever incapacitated or if you die.

How do you choose them? They can be a real life friend or family member. They can be someone you know in fandom. Whoever it is, it should be someone you trust because they’ll be given access to your account in the event of your death. You’ll need to be able to talk to them about how you feel about your fanworks and what you want to have happen to them. Do you want them to stand just as they are? Do you want them added to the orphan_account? Do you want your entire account deleted?

After you have chosen your FNOK, both you and your chosen person will need to send a message to the Abuse team - they’re the team who also manage next of kin requests. Both of you will need an AO3 account in order to do this, so if the person you choose isn’t involved in fandom they’ll need to get an account first.

You don’t have to be next of kin for each other. It’s fine if the relationship is just one way. But, you can only have one next of kin. If there are 2 or more, there is the possibility of disagreements about what you want done, and AO3 has no way to arbitrate those disagreements.

You can end the agreement if you want to. If you have a falling out with your friend, or if they leave fandom and you lose touch, or if you want to end this part of the relationship for any reason, either one of you can send another message to the Abuse team and provide both usernames of the people involved. They’ll send you both a message to let you know the FNOK relationship has ended.

How does AO3 know you’re dead? Your FNOK will tell them by submitting another report to the Abuse team. The Abuse team will then send an email to the address they have on file. If you don’t reply back within 10 days, they’ll pass control of your account over to your FNOK. It is important that you keep your AO3 account email up to date so you don’t miss this message. Remember that AO3 doesn’t know your real life identity, so if the person you trust says you’ve passed and you don’t tell AO3 that you haven’t, then they’ll believe them.

If your account is transferred but you’re still alive, submit a form to the Abuse team and let them know! They’ll do their best to get your account back to you.

You can read these and more details about Fannish Next of Kin over at the AO3 Terms of Service FAQ. Live long and prosper - and plan for the future 🖖

I hate when people say “I’m against abortion except for if the pregnancy threatens the life of the mother” every single pregnancy threatens the life of the pregnant person. We’ve gotten too far removed from that, taken for granted that pregnancy is safe. It is not. Pregnancy and puerperal complications have been a fairly common cause of death throughout history. Even now, maternal mortality is on the rise in the US, the maternal mortality rate varies wildly across the states and it is disproportionately higher for Black women. Being pregnant is getting more dangerous, not less dangerous.

Please boost this if you can!!! This story is still developing and a lot of the people who have been getting the messages say they’re scared to leave home now.

Activism is not cold-calling.

Activism is not cold-calling, and this is critically important to understand.

I'm seeing a lot of posts on here about 'building bridges' and 'finding community,' and then (extremely valid) response posts saying "BUT HOW??" And I'm going to explain something that can be very counter-intuitive: there is strategy involved in community.

As a longtime volunteer labour organizer, I’ve taken and taught many trainings on the strategy of talking. Something that surprises a lot of people is the very first thing you do in a union campaign. You sit down with your organizing committee, take out pen and paper, and literally map it out. You draw a physical map of the workplace: where are the entrances, exits, break rooms, supervisor offices. Essentially, ‘where is it safe to have a union conversation.’ Then you draw another physical chart of your coworkers. You sort out who is union-friendly, openly hostile to unions, or somewhere in the middle, and then you plan out very deliberately and carefully who talks to whom and in what order.

Consider: If Vocally Leftist Jane walks up to Conservative David and says "hey what do you think about unions," David is going to shut down immediately. He's not inclined to listen to Jane. But if Jane talks to Moderate Jason and brings him into the fold, then Jason is a far more effective strategic choice to talk to David, and David may actually hear him out without an instant reaction.

IMPORTANT CAVEAT: If Conservative David turns out to be Alt-Right David, and could be dangerous to follow organizers, we write him off. We are not trying to reach Alt-Right David. We are trying to reach Conservative David, who may actually be persuaded to find solidarity with other employees as fellow workers. Jason is a safe scout to find out which one he is. It does no one any good if Leftist Jane (or even Moderate Jane who is a visible minority) talks to Alt-Right David and puts herself on his radar. Not only has she done nothing to convince Alt-Right David to join a union - she's probably actively turned him against the idea - but now she's also in danger and the entire campaign is at risk. NOBODY WANTS THIS. Jane was NOT a hero for doing this. The organizing committee was foolish and enacted a terrible strategy to everyone's detriment.

Where you can make a difference is with people who will listen to you. You having a conversation with your well-meaning but clueless Centrist Democrat Auntie, and maybe gently helping her understand some things the media has been glossing over, is way more strategically useful than you marching up to MAGA Neighbour You've Met Once and trying to "build community" or "understand" them. They don't care. They're impervious, dangerous, and cruel. But maybe your beloved auntie will think about what you said, and then talk to her friend Anna who IDs as "fiscally conservative" but didn't vote because she can't bring herself to get on board with Trump. Then perhaps Anna talks to her brother Nic who has MAGA leanings but isn't all the way there yet. Proto-MAGA Nic would not have listened to you, nor would he have listened to Centrist Democrat Auntie, but he might absorb some of what his sister is saying.

This is not a cop-out or an echo chamber. This is you spending your time and energy strategically and safely. You are not a useful activist to anyone if you’re dead. Anyone who is telling you to hurl yourself directly at MAGA assholes like cannon fodder has no understanding of the strategy behind community building, and you should feel comfortable writing them off.

Last point: If you are tired, emotionally devastated, and/or in danger: take a break. This post is for people who would feel better jumping into action, not for people who are too overwhelmed to even think about it right now. You are worth so much even if you’re not actively Doing Activism, and your rest is worth more than “a break period so you can recharge and Do More Activism.” We all deserve the individual dignity of being worthy of comfort, rest & safety just on the basis of being human, outside of whatever we're doing for others' benefit. To deny ourselves that dignity is to devalue ourselves, and that’s the absolute last thing any of us should be doing right now.

Oh hey this is the post I was going to write as a follow-up and now I don’t have to. Anyway, see everything above for why blaming the way women respond to men on the internet who they have no existing relationship with for the rise of alt-right misogyny is extremely beside the point. Effective activism leverages existing relationships - and requires people who are committed to doing activism in the first place.

wow! as a broke college kid, i wish there was a way to access books and movies as well as scientific articles that the new administration isn't necessarily a fan of. man. If only there was a free and trusted vpn ( up to 10 gigs of downloadable data) to use in conjunction with an anonymizing router (also free up to 10 gigs) to safely, er, permanently borrow media in an untraceable way as well as share files. Man, what's that browser that keeps your online activity anonymous? I'm awfully attached to firefox, personally. If only i had a browser extension that would throw a smoke screen over my browsing data while blocking ads at the same time.

what was i talking about? hmm. weird.

Spells To Forget Us

  • YA witchy romance
  • a powerful teen witch who’s expected to take over her grandmother’s witch council role
  • and a girl struggling under the public pressure of being the focus of her family’s influencer blogging content
  • when they meet they’re immediately drawn together and start dating - and the witch casts a required spell so that if they break up, the mundane will forget about magic and their relationship
  • then they break up. and both forget. and then they meet and start dating again, regaining all their memories
  • the cycle keeps continuing, and they have to figure out how to deal with their issues their family expectations are causing so that they can potentially have a real chance together
  • bi & lesbian MCs

Also, like, I'm sorry but if you've set up a free shelter, and people refuse to go because sleeping on the sidewalk under a freeway bridge is more pleasant, that's fucking on you, that's not on them.

You really can't compete with sleeping under the overpass so you are going to force people into shelter?

Unspeakably cruel and stupid.

Most Correct Take on this subject.

AIUI the most common reason for this is that most shelters don't let you do drugs while at the shelter. If someone prefers doing drugs to sleeping in a bed is that the shelter's fault?

Reasons I have heard from local homeless about why they won't go to shelters include:

  • Can't bring your dog
  • Can't bring your prescribed medications
  • Can't sleep due to noise, light, or forced schedule
  • Fleas, bedbugs, and other infestations
  • More likely to get in a fight than when living on the street
  • More likely to get stolen from than when living on the street
  • Not enough space for personal belongings
  • Curfews that don't match work schedules
  • Why bother when there's a monthslong waitlist to get into the shelter, and then you get evicted from the shelter after a week, because you arrived two minutes after curfew, because the bus was late?
  • Requirement to hold down a job
  • Required to do daytime "volunteer" work at the shelter, preventing job-searching or actual job work
  • Required to attend Christian services, as often as twice daily

Those last two in particular were listed as reasons that people don't use the single available shelter in Grants Pass.

also, yeah, it is the shelter's fault if someone chooses sleeping outside over dealing with any/all of the above while also going through drug withdrawals. The average adult doesn't want to go a day without coffee, and yet can't understand why the immensely painful/dangerous ordeal of quitting hard drugs cold turkey is a turnoff from a bed in a shelter. Almost anyone would pick their tent on the sidewalk to avoid that experience. Put a damn safe injection site in your shelter.

Abstract Patients with long COVID can develop humoral autoimmunity after severe acute SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, whether similar increases in autoantibody responses occur after mild infection and whether vaccination prior to SARS-CoV-2 breakthrough infection can limit autoantibody responses is unknown. In this study, we demonstrate that mild SARS-CoV-2 infection increases autoantibodies associated with rheumatic autoimmune diseases and diabetes in most individuals, regardless of vaccination status prior to infection. However, patients with long COVID and persistent neurologic and fatigue symptoms (neuro-PASC) have substantially higher autoantibody responses than convalescent control subjects at an average of 8 mo postinfection. Furthermore, high titers of systemic lupus erythematosus– and CNS-associated autoantibodies in patients with neuro-PASC are associated with impaired cognitive performance and greater symptom severity. In summary, we found that mild SARS-CoV-2 primary and breakthrough infections can induce persistent humoral autoimmunity in both patients with neuro-PASC and healthy COVID convalescents, suggesting that a reappraisal of mitigation strategies against SARS-CoV-2 is warranted to prevent transmission and potential development of autoimmunity.

to break this down even further:

this study essentially found that being infected with even a "mild" case of covid (SARS-CoV-2) & subsequently developing long covid causes your body to produce the same immune responses seen in autoimmune disorders like arthritis and type 1 diabetes. as a reminder, autoimmune diseases are where your immune system attacks healthy body cells, which will eventually lead to serious (& often painful) medical problems if you do not manage them properly. managing autoimmune diseases & disorders are often very expensive, if they're even possible to treat at all. many of them are still very poorly understood... like, for example, those associated with long-term post-covid infection.

furthermore, being vaccinated does not fully protect you from this unpleasant covid side effect. vaccinated individuals can still acquire long covid, and by association, that means y'all can still develop these poorly-understood immune problems. if you are vaccinated and happen to catch covid, the vaccine only lowers the chances you'll develop long covid from that one infection. you can still acquire it from future infections if you don't take precautions to prevent one from happening in the first place.

your takeaways from this should be to mask up when you go out in public, to get your booster shots regularly, and to not let anyone try to tell you catching covid is safe or normal. every new bit of information we learn about what the SARS-CoV-2 virus can do to you is more horrifying than the last, and y'all truly, truly do not need to subject yourselves to that shit.

If you voted provisional, attend your ballot hearing anyway.

If your ballot needs to be cured, go fix the problem anyway.

Do not abandon your ballot.

Get it counted, regardless of what state you're in, regardless of whether you think it will help.

It could be the difference in a down-ballot race.

And if they do a recount, if there was fraud, it could even be the difference for Kamala.

Get your vote counted. No matter what the results say.

I think it's important to remember, as a rule of thumb, if you take advantage of a social service, it actually makes it easier for other people who need that service to access it. Most of the time, when these services get cut, it's because politicians will look at usage and say "see, no one is really using this thing, we can afford to trim the budget for food stamps by at least half". Whereas if you decide to step up and use these programs, even if you feel like you "don't really need it", at bare minimum it's another data point advocates can use to say "hey, look, people are using this thing, this is an important service we are providing, do not cut our funding".

I work at a nonprofit, and it is absolutely wild explaining to folks that being part of a program that reduces their energy bill actually helps us get funding to help even more people get energy bill savings.

You aren’t taking resources from anyone by using programs you qualify for. You are making a case for those programs being important enough to continue to exist and (in many cases) grow.

We live in a world so controlled by the idea of resource scarcity that we reason "If I get help, that must be taking help away from someone else!"

It's also important to keep in mind, these organizations know their criteria for service. They'll tell you right away if you aren't eligible.

So if you are eligible, then you have every right to use this service. And the organizations want you to use this service very much.
