Plus One
Jake pulls his pants up just as the knock on the door sounds, a scowl reflected in the mirror as he moves to answer it. He’s already behind schedule. He’s expected to be downstairs and greeting guests in twenty minutes, and he still needs to press his shirt.
He yanks the door open, and the scowl instantly morphs to a genuine smile seeing you standing there.
“You’re not the hooker I ordered,” he says, leaning out the door and looking left and right.
“Sorry to disappoint,” you laugh and shove at his shoulder. “I am not the hooker you ordered, but I am the help you need.”
He never knows why, after all these years, the fact you know him so well always surprises him.
Jake shrugs, stepping aside to let you in. “Ah well, you’re probably prettier anyway.”
You ignore the comment and saunter into the room, dropping your bag on the bed and hooking your dress bag over the top of the bathroom door.
He stalls at the door, sticking his head out again to scan the corridor. “Where’s Bradshaw?” he asks, expecting your boyfriend to appear any second.
“It’s just you and me, roomie.”
