Summary: After Shuri uses her genius to get Hydra out of Bucky’s head, James Buchanan Barnes needs an assistant to help him adjust to the world. If he doesn’t pick one himself, Fury will assign someone to him. Agent Sykes walks into his life and makes a good first impression. She’s out to prove herself a capable agent. He’s out to get her to break her “no office romance” rule. What they find along the way is more than either of them expected. But what if they found it too late? 

Warnings (each part will be tagged accordingly): injury descriptions, torture, smut from the offset, fluff, angst, talk of terrorist attack, mentions of mass deaths, feelings of depression and failure, avoidance of dealing with trauma, cocky Bucky, bittersweet/unhappy ending.

Notes: Part 2,3 & 5 flick between flashbacks and present time. However both are in timeline order. Takes places between Civil War and Infinity War. Deviating from canon so Team Cap aren’t on the run at the end of CW. Shuri has rewired Bucky and he’s no longer on ice. They’re all friends and Avengers. The ‘new’ S.H.I.E.L.D is up and running.

Part 4

Y/N typed the message into her phone - Thank the lord for technology! - and pressed send. Hiding the device under the desk as to not be rude to Bruce who was an hour and a half into his online lecture. 

Y/N stifled her fourth - or was it four hundredth - yawn and looked over at Bruce’s only physical audience. Bucky was drumming his fingers on his metal arm, his short nails causing a soft tinkling tune and Sam was doodling on the notepad Bruce had given him.

Bless them. They’d done everything she’d asked. But they were just as clueless as when they started. 

Bucky and Sam simultaneously shot to their feet as soon as Bruce thanked the camera and the holograms of the people who had joined his lecture. Y/N smirked but followed shortly after them, politely thanking Bruce as she passed him. 

Bucky and Sam were facing one another in the hallway. Sam’s long finger pointing in Bucky’s face, both handsome men’s features twisted into accusing scowls. 

“It wasn’t me, bird brains!” Bucky defended.

Y/N rolled her eyes, they’d been sitting silently for the last two hours. How could they possibly have found something to argue about in the thirty seconds since leaving the room?

Jared’s head rested against the cool glass of the window, as his fingers wrote the caption to go with the selfie he had taken, riding in the back seat of the car, to post to Instagram.

‘Just landed, Hey Austin! It’s good to be home. I missed you.’ - the post wasn’t for his fans, it was for you. A subtle message to see if you were up, a little after two a.m on a Thursday night, there was a chance. Though he knew you were normally asleep by one if you had work the next day, maybe there was a chance you would see it.

He didn’t want to be that guy, dropping the ‘are you awake?’ text. The arrangement between the two of you had worked during the last hiatus, no pressure, no strings attached, friends hanging out and more often than not falling into bed together. Though you had spoken during his months away filming, you hadn’t discussed the continuation of said arrangement when he returned, so no, he didn’t want to be that guy.

Hey and welcome! So to make long story short, I have progressive hearing loss in my left ear (I have lost 80% of my hearing so far.) Docs say my right ear will also start to deteriorate, there’s no explanation for it and it’s irreversible. I’m not looking for sympathy, it is what it is. But it does mean I have been listening to a shit ton of music lately, every chance I get, which is sparking inspiration for fics. So I’ve set myself a challenge (thanks for the idea @negans-lucille-tblr​ and @firefly-in-darkness​) to write a fic based on a song for every letter of the alphabet.
