Summary: After Shuri uses her genius to get Hydra out of Bucky’s head, James Buchanan Barnes needs an assistant to help him adjust to the world. If he doesn’t pick one himself, Fury will assign someone to him. Agent Sykes walks into his life and makes a good first impression. She’s out to prove herself a capable agent. He’s out to get her to break her “no office romance” rule. What they find along the way is more than either of them expected. But what if they found it too late?
Warnings (each part will be tagged accordingly): injury descriptions, torture, smut from the offset, fluff, angst, talk of terrorist attack, mentions of mass deaths, feelings of depression and failure, avoidance of dealing with trauma, cocky Bucky, bittersweet/unhappy ending.

Notes: Part 2,3 & 5 flick between flashbacks and present time. However both are in timeline order. Takes places between Civil War and Infinity War. Deviating from canon so Team Cap aren’t on the run at the end of CW. Shuri has rewired Bucky and he’s no longer on ice. They’re all friends and Avengers. The ‘new’ S.H.I.E.L.D is up and running.
