I’m not a fan of AI generative art or images, but I think it would be funny if, going forward, any instance in magical girl works (or any form of speculative fiction where characters are supposed to keep their activities a secret) of someone getting a photo of the characters doing their magical activities gets immediately rejected by other civilians because they “can just tell” that the photo is AI-generated.

It’s an extra layer that keeps the masquerade in place at least.

That’s what I had thought as well

I already talked about the similarities between L. Frank Baum's Oz books and magical girls, but there's also his book Queen Zixi of Ix to consider.

The plot reads like something you'd see in an older magical girl story: a girl (Fluff) gets a magical item (a cloak) from a fairy that is able to grant wishes, which causes all kinds of magical events in the kingdom. Meanwhile Zixi, the Witch-Queen of a neighboring land (who is centuries old but due to magic retains the appearance of a teenage girl) wants the cloak because she wants its magic for her own ends (her reflection shows her as an old crone due to her real age and she doesn't want to see that).

Her and Fluff (spoilers) eventually come to see each other as friends.

Oh, and don't forget the part about how Zixi leads her army into battle wearing golden armor (and is said to have won every battle she's been in).

Some of my favorite moments from DC's Super-Pets Special: Bitedentity Crisis one-shot. Most are awesome / wholesome in tone, exactly what you'd expect from a super-pets book. Highlight for Refuge by Michael W. Conrad and Sami Basri, a story about Damian's bat-pets that can totally be read as a meta-commentary on the place these animals can occupy in superhero stories. How they are inevitably put aside and how this can reflect the way we treat animals (especially the less conventionally domesticated ones, cows, chicken, dragons...) in our own society. It's a very touching and surprisingly thought-provoking story.

Another highlight is the Bitewing story, Pup, pup and Away by Tony Fleecs and Mike Norton, funny, lightheaded and cute, with a high count of obscure super pets (I was almost expecting Itty to show up, not this time sadly, Green Lantern's sentient alien starfish friend remains a hidden deep-cut). All the stories in the book are somewhat good and have something to offer, I didn't really care for the Watchmen parody story though. If you're expecting Detective Chimp or other cool DC primates to appear here that's not the place for you for there's another one-shot solely dedicated to them, the Ape-Ril Special #1.

Do you think Blackfire had a point when she said Earth has changed Star. After watching the episode Go I always wonder if Starfire and raven switched personalities. That Starfire doesn't seem like she'd be naive or insecure about fitting in.

Avatar

Ohhhhhh boy, SO!

Per Starfire's backstory in the TTG! comic tie-ins, she was already very naturally kind, and was loved by her people for it. But I think she also had to cover up a lot of her normal personality because "niceness" was not a concept on Tamaran, Starfire's compassion was much more unconditional and extended far beyond what normal Tamaranians would show, because she showed sympathy and mercy to enemies when she was more fully allowed to be and express herself (i.e. on Earth). It's why she was so baffled that Robin would unlock her cuffs, in her mind they were hostile and enemies and she couldn't fathom him suddenly wanting to help her for no real benefit to himself. That was not a thing on Tamaran. (And how could it be? In war, empathy and compassion are luxuries.) But she readily expressed it herself after only a few short months on Earth so I think she had that natural instinct to "help everyone" and be merciful she just had to suppress it and hide it when in her own warrior culture.

And she definitely learned to hold herself back and pull her punches in her time away too.

Blackfire is ribbing at how Starfire has gone soft, with that comment. But Starfire was always soft. She just needed people who loved her for her to let her show her true self around.

I was so shocked when I learned that most artists do not believe in talent, saying that it is not real. Because it very much is, and that's evident in all the unique ways people have expressed themselves over time. However, it should be reminded what exactly talent is and is not.

Most people (artist or not) get talent confused with skill, ambition, and passion.

Talent - the essence of you and how your view of the world is expressed with other people. Your heart, your soul. THIS is what makes art moving whether you like how it looks or not. This cannot be taught or obtained as we all have talent of some kind.

Skill - How good you are at something or the lack thereof. Art is SKILL, not a talent. It is merely a tool of expression that our species uses to communicate with each other, any person can make art. Skill comes from time and practice. You do not have to be talented to be skilled and vice versa. Art that lacks skill can still be captivating.

Ambition - The inert drive to complete something, to try and fail again. Ambition is generally active and not a passive action.

Passion - The love, admiration, respect, and care you have for something. You can be passionate about something but not be skilled or ambitious, at it. For example, I am passionate about animation but I do not exactly want to be an animator. *These definitions are based on real world experience, both mine and others.

You can be all 4 of these but it's no requirement to make art and express yourself.

You do NOT have to be talented at art to be a skilled artist. You may want to focus your soul energy into something else and that's ok! There are talented artists who are not skilled, and skilled artists who do not focus their talent in this area.

However you came to make art is valid and right for you, there are no rules on how to create! as long as you made it with your own hands, or got permission to use the artwork of others.

What I’ve been saying for YEARS! Both talent and skill can exist together, like come ON!

I'm trying so hard not to rant about the 2024 Garfield movie (this is another form of masking) but I'm genuinely annoyed at them turning this into a father/son thing when Garfield's origins in the comic and specials always made it about Garfield and his MOTHER

It’s probably because we had never seen Garfield’s dad in anything else. They are trying a new story for the movie so it would make sense that they try to introduce a new character connected to Garfield. Still if his mother doesn’t get some scenes or a cameo at least there’s gonna be some letters and petitions about it.

“What if we could let go of the binaries of good or bad, beautiful or ugly when talking about feelings?

What if we could see all feelings as necessary arrows, pointing us towards needs that are met or unmet?

What if we looked like the hard, messy, so-called ugly feelings with curiosity and compassion, rather than repressing them out of shame?”

What do you think would be the best method fans could use when asking for more content of the 2003 Teen Titans universe, the one created by Glen Murakami & Sam Register?

Money.

As in, buy the DVDs/Blu-rays, buy the soundtracks for Season One and Season Two, buy any official merch that might still exist, get whatever paid subscription lets you continue watching the series on streaming services.

And the other thing fandom can do is generate buzz. Write letters (actual physical letters that you mail in), start hashtag trends, organize visible appreciation events, things like that.

What you don't do is go dig up the socials of anyone who worked on the show and badger them about it.

I'm not optimistic and frankly I don't trust modern Warner/DC with any kind of revival but knock yourselves out, if you want.

Hii, i see a lot of hate for the TT03 show/cartoon online from DC fans, is there any particular reason for that?

It honestly depends which corner of the fandom you ask.

I know back in the day when it was actually airing, DCAU/Timmverse fans weren't fond of it for its overall lighter tone, kid-friendliness, and anime-inspired animation and character design.

New Teen Titans fans weren't/aren't fond of it because of the way it simplifies and softens the characters and makes them more kid-appropriate, kid-relatable, and slots them into identifiable character tropes. (i.e. "That's the goth girl, that one's the funny exchange student", etc.) They also resent how the cartoon versions have become the most iconic depictions of the team and characters and influenced/changed how they're portrayed in the comics and other subsequent media.

Pretty sure there was a contingent of anime snobs who didn't like an american cartoon dipping into the stylization and sight gags of anime.

Live Action Titans fans are basically in the same vein with their complaints as New Teen Titans fans, dislike the less-serious tone, resent the cartoon's iconic character designs, etc.

And uh... are there any other factions? I think that covers the gamut.

No offense, but people who disregard Bruce's no killing code and boil every rogue/criminal into an irredeemable melting pot kinda worry me. " death is easier than rehabilitation " lmao way to sound like a fucking cop

Not to go to war for a fictional blorbo like a game of thrones fanatic, but I think the DC fandom has a blanket definition of what trauma is.

Particularly Bruce's, because his trauma is satirised the most. And hey, I get it. I joke about it sometimes. Doesn't make it less impactful.

Depending on the individual, a person's trauma can be so severe it literally makes them unable to do certain things if they're related to said traumatic event.

When people think of Batman, they reduce it to ' Oh he just doesn't like guns' when it's established that it's murder in general

That's why Jason asking him to murder Joker is unfair. I'm pretty sure he himself confirms it was a fucked up thing to demand later on. That's like Bruce asking him to overdose to prove he loves him more than Catherine
