DOO CENTRAL'S FUN FACT FRIDAYS: DYNOMUTT, DOG WONDER
This week’s Fun Fact Friday will work backwards into Scooby and the gang’s history of teaming up with the Blue Falcon and Dynomutt!
For those who don’t know those names, Blue Falcon and Dynomutt are the two superhero main characters in the 1970s Hanna-Barbera cartoon “Dynomutt, Dog Wonder”. This show was broadcast alongside The Scooby-Doo Show in the mid-1970s under the name The Scooby-Doo/Dynomutt Hour. The Blue Falcon, a Batman-type superhero, fights crime alongside his robotic dog Dynomutt! Dynomutt had all sorts of technological and goofy gadgets equipped to his body that would aid in catching criminals!
Fans may only know Blue Falcon and Dynomutt from their team-up with Mystery Inc. in the recent direct-to-video movie Scooby-Doo! Mask of the Blue Falcon! In this movie, Blue Falcon and Dynomutt team up with Mystery Inc. to defeat Mr. Hyde, the superheroes’ archenemy who is out to ruin the comic book convention the gang is attending.
Another time that they teamed up with Mystery Inc. was in the 40th episode of Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated titled “Heart of Evil”. Radley Crown (The Blue Falcon) works as a security guard at Quest Labs (referencing Johnny Quest) with his dog. The lab is attacked by a humanoid dragon robot (created by evil Dr. Zin) that is in search of one of Dr. Quest’s inventions. The robot left but seriously harmed Crown’s dog. Crown begged Dr. Quest to help save his dog’s life and he agreed. Dr. Quest used the Quest X Power Source (the invention the dragon is after), to power and revive Crown’s dog. Five years later, the two become crime fighters calling themselves Dynomutt and the Blue Falcon. The rest of the episode is the two teaming up with Mystery Inc. to defeat the Dragon before it destroys Crystal Cove!
The superheroes can also be seen playing on Scooby’s team The Scooby Doobies in the All-Star Laff-a-Lympics!
The first time, however, that the teams crossed paths were actually in the very first episode of the Dynomutt, Dog Wonder series titled “Everyone Hyde!” which aired in 1976! The duo along with Mystery Inc. try to solve the mystery of Mr. Hyde, a mad scientist that is wreaking havoc on Big City turning all its citizens including the mayor into Hyde freaks!
Mystery Inc. would make two more appearances in the Dynomutt, Dog Wonder cartoon series. They helped the duo capture their foes in the second episode titled “What Now, Lowbrow?’ and in the tenth episode titled "The Wizard of Ooze”.
(Let it be noted that I didn’t know these three episodes included Scooby-Doo up until a few days ago so they’re actually not included in my count of Scooby-Doo episodes if you feel they count)
Scooby-Doo has had quite a history of teaming up with these two superheroes that defend Big City! This history has traced back to the very first story of Dynomutt and Blue Falcon! The two dogs both are goofy and fun personality-wise and definitely work well together when fighting crime!
Hopefully Scooby-Doo! Mask of the Blue Falcon won’t be the last time we see these two Hanna-Barbera dog icons team up to save the day!
