10 Best Disney Cartoons
Disney is very successful, and it’s clear as to why this is the case! While Disney has made some terrible decisions (refer to my last blog), they have also been involved with many awesome cartoons! Some of which have become classics to many! Here are my 10 best Disney cartoons!
10. Motorcity
Ah yes, Motorcity. The cartoon that Disney treated like absolute trash during it’s airing which is why it is now one of the most underrated cartoons out there. Motorcity was a series that came about in 2012 and ended in 2013 with 1 season and 20 episodes. Motorcity takes place in a futuristic version of Detroit where Abraham Kane, an evil billionaire has taken over. However, a group of rebels named the Burners aim to stop him. The Burners consist of Mike (the leader), Julie (an insider gathering information from Abraham), Chuck (the tech guy), Dutch (the smart one), Texas (the muscle) and Jacob (the old aged mentor). The crew protects Motorcity, a small part of Detroit Abraham hasn’t gotten yet, from being capitalized as well. While there is so much for me to love about this show, my personal favorite aspects are the interesting characters, the plotline and the fact that the series is quite thought provoking. While Motorcity isn’t my absolute number 1 favorite here, it is close, and it is definitely the most underrated Disney cartoon. You can watch Motorcity on iTunes!
9. Wander Over Yonder
It’s sad that so far on this, both shows that I have picked were shows that were screwed over by Disney. Running for 2 seasons of 43 episodes from 2013 to 2016, Wander Over Yonder is about Wander, a Nomad who goes around to different galaxies aiming to spread positivity and fun with the help of his friend Sylvia the Zbornak. However, one of the most powerful villains in the galaxy, Lord Hater often gets infuriated with him while on his quest for galactic domination. I think this series is awesome. My favorite factors are the vibrant characters and the flashy designs, but the absolute best factor is the fact that it has a positive message. This show is truly an amazing show that makes me smile whenever I watch it. You can watch Wander Over Yonder on Disney Plus!
8. American Dragon: Jake Long
Who doesn’t love dragons? And who wouldn’t love a show where the main character is a dragon? Airing from 2005 to 2007, American Dragon: Jake Long consisted of 2 seasons and 52 episodes. The series was about a boy who lived in New York named Jake. He finds out that he has the ability to turn into The American Dragon. As the American Dragon, he must defend the world from different mythological creatures. Already a pretty cool concept right? Well, get this: his crush, Rose, is a part of this group of ninjas known as the Huntsclan that slay mythological creatures like Jack. This series is awesome. I love the different characters and how they play off of tropes, I love the humor and the concept of a kid who can transform into a dragon is quite intriguing. It is an awesome show and I wholeheartedly recommend it. You can watch American Dragon: Jake Long on Disney Plus!
7. Star Vs. The Forces of Evil
It’s gonna get a little weird…it’s gonna get a little wild! This series is awesome! Spanning a total of 4 seasons and 77 episodes, Star Vs The Forces Of Evil became a heavy hitter for Disney. The series revolves around Star Butterfly, a magical princess from the dimension of Mewni. After accidentally setting the family castle on fire, Star is sent to Earth with her family’s hopes that she will mature. On Earth, she moves in with a boy named Marco and his family. She often takes Marco with her to battle monsters, which brings in some awesome adventures. As the series goes on, it gets more intense and story-driven. Some highlights of the series are the character designs, the plot and the characters which are all well written and likable. While I was mixed on the ending, the experience overall was worth it and it was a great series which I recommend. You can watch Star Vs. The Forces of Evil on Disney Plus or Hulu!
6. Ducktales (2017)
An awesome series that, despite ending already, still has managed to captivate a passionate fandom…and it’s no surprise why! Ducktales ran for a total of 3 seasons and 69 episodes, and it was another one that was loved by Disney fans and animation fans in general. The story revolves around Donald Duck, along with his nephews, Huey, Louie and Dewey and his uncle Scrooge. They go on many treasure hunting adventures while facing different sorts of villains. The story also has multiple arcs with each of them being quite engaging. My favorite things about this series are the humor, the characters and the comedy. Ducktales is an awesome reboot. You can watch Ducktales on Disney Plus!
5. Phineas and Ferb
I mean…it is one of Disney’s most known and recognizable shows, so it had to be on here! Running for a total of 4 seasons and 129 episodes from 2007 to 2015, Phineas and Ferb quickly became one of Disney’s heavy hitters. Phineas and Ferb revolves around 2 brothers, Phineas and Ferb, who find things to do so that they can enjoy their 104 days of summer! The two are often inventing new things while their older sister Candace tries proving to their mother that they are doing this. Another thing to note is that each episode, Phineas would say “hey, where’s Perry” as their pet platypus Perry disappears. This is because he is a top secret agent at some all animal government organization. Each episode has a side plot involving Perry stopping the dumb villain Doofenschmirtz. By the time the episode is done, Perry is back. If I were to highlight my favorite aspects of Phineas and Ferb, I would say that I really like the execution of the episodes, as even though the episodes were formulaic, they were always executed in a way that made them feel distinct. I also like the character designs and the wide batch of characters. I love Phineas and Ferb, and if you have somehow avoided it all your life, I highly recommend watching it. You can watch Phineas and Ferb on Disney Plus and Amazon Prime!
4. Kim Possible
Kim Possible was another one of the classic Disney cartoons that many of us hold fond memories with today. A series that ran from 2002 to 2007 and had a total of 87 episodes amongst its 4 seasons. It was about Kim, a high school cheerleader who was also a crimefighter. Assisted by her friend Ron and his pet mole rat, Rufus, Kim fought crime all over the world while managing a “normal” school life. Kim Possible approached this “I fight crime while still living a normal school life” concept much differently than other shows that did, but one obvious example of this was that Kim’s identity was not hidden. This really made it interesting as in most shows with this concept, the protagonist’s identity remains hidden. Some of the highlights of this show are the characters which all make the experience entertaining, the unique concepts introduced and the fast-paced action. Some standout episodes to me are Rappin’ Draken, Trading Faces and of course the final episode. I would definitely recommend watching the entire series. You can watch Kim Possible on Disney Plus!
3. The Owl House
It really pains me that this one has been cut short of its run. A truly spectacular show that is pushing standards. The series made its official premiere on January 10, 2020 and is currently running. It has 2 seasons of 40 episodes and will have a third season consisting of 3 44 minute long episodes. The Owl House is about a girl named Luz who finds a portal which takes her to a new world known as Boiling Isles. Here, she befriends a witch named Eda. She essentially practices becoming a witch with the help of Eda and her demon sidekick King. The series is honestly great to me, and the highlights for me are the animation, the LGBTQ representation and the characters who all were very unique to me. You can watch The Owl House on Disney Plus or Disney Now!
2. Gravity Falls
What is known to be one of Disney’s biggest hits…and I can definitely see why! Gravity Falls was a series that had 2 seasons and 40 episodes, and was quickly able to captivate a large fandom. Gravity Falls was centered around two twins - Dipper and Mabel. The two visit their strange Grunkle, Stan, at a town called Gravity Falls. Stan owns a tourist trap known as the Mystery Shack, where Dipper and Mabel befriend the employees. Dipper slowly learns that this town is not all that it appears to be. With the help of Mabel, along with Mystery Shack employees, Wendy and Soos, Dipper slowly unravels the town’s biggest mysteries. This show was perfect for me. My favorite things are the mystery, the characters who all were entertaining in their own ways, and the pacing which never leaves an episode boring. I have seen many others rank it in their 10 best Disney cartoons lists as well, and I have even heard people classify it as one of their favorite cartoons of all time which I agree with! Gravity Falls is an iconic hit, and there is certainly no denying why it is so awesome! You can watch Gravity Falls on Disney Plus!
1. Amphibia
My profile picture probably gave this one away: Amphibia! It’s a series that is currently ongoing with 2 seasons of 49 episodes. It revolves around Anne Boonchuy who steals a magical box that transports her and her friends Sasha and Marcy into the world of Amphibia, which is full of frogs. Now that she is separated from her friends, Anne must find them and return home. However, it is not as easy as it may seem as she faces many obstacles along the way. I personally love this show for the fresh new concept, the characters and the humor. Amphibia is awesome, and it’s no surprise that it’s one of the most talked about cartoons right now! You can watch Amphibia on Disney Plus!
