Original art from the ‘bible’ ND wrote up. As you can see, a lot more faithful to the 80s designs, though that She-Ra has a bit of a Greco-Roman slant. Fun to see elements of their later designs in these, though–Glimmer’s asymmetrical hair, She-Ra’s winged shoes… you love to see it. Non-original art from the pitch below the cut, bc we might as well have the higher quality ones on hand.

i really like that in the owl house these kids have adults to count on, unlike amphibia or i dunno she-ra. yes, she-ra's cast is significantly older, but they are still young adults with their own trauma, and they have no one to turn to for some advice. glimmer's parents are the closest we get to adult characters with lived experiences, but when they are not absent, they are very on the sidelines. amphibia is even worse, 13 year olds are the most powerful ones, so naturally they are in charge, with the adults of the frog village looking up to them. which is like- ma'am that is a literal child can she have some Guidance.

toh is especially enjoyable for me Because not only does it have a lot of older characters, almost all of them have their own thing going on, which is so interesting and something that makes the world feel so much more alive, and also provides support for all these traumatized teenagers

Hi! I’m trying to plan my step-daughter’s 12th bday party for next month. We chose an Owl House theme for the party (we love watching it together.) She recently came out so it’s extra special to think of the grom and other eps where we were extra encouraging and supportive of the story lines! Anyway, I want to surprise her with some themed food for the party. So far I have fried orbs and hooty cookies. Any other suggestions??? Thanks so much!!!

This is the sweetest ask of all time. What an awesome idea! And I’m so excited that someone is bringing the Hooty cookies to life. I’m no chef myself and I’m not sure what constraints you have on what you’re able to prepare, but here are some food items from/inspired by the show that could potentially work:

  • Could you decorate a circular cake with one of the glyphs? The light glyph would be my go-to, but maybe your stepdaughter has one she likes more.
  • Whatever kind of cake you get, make sure to say “sorry… it was supposed to be a crumble” when you present it to her.
  • Definitely get some sort of red punch/juice and call it apple blood.
  • Eda mentions that one of the few foods in the Boiling Isles that Luz can eat is griffin eggs. Not quite sure how to turn this into a snack, unless your stepdaughter would enjoy actual eggs (maybe for breakfast on the day of?). Could also do egg shaped cookies, but it sounds like you already have a great idea for cookies, and I don’t know if you want two kinds of cookies. Maybe buy some sort of chocolate Easter eggs?
  • I’m trying and failing to think of a way to make fairy pie look good and still be tasty, but if you can think of one, that’d be great.
  • This one’s a bit of a stretch, but in Keeping Up A-fear-ances, King and Lilith eat ice cream, and we can see the names of some of the flavors they eat: Eye Scream, Franken Fruit, Key Slime Pie, Rath Berry, Abomi-berry, and Sludge Chunks. You could make/buy ice cream and change the labels to read some of these names.

This is a really sweet idea, and you sound like a great stepparent. All you other Owl House blogs out there (especially the ones with more experience in the kitchen that me), please add more ideas onto this. Wishing your stepdaughter the best birthday ever!

P.S. If you wouldn’t mind sending me a picture of those Hooty cookies when you make them, I would love to see them.

Remember this person? Well, the party happened, and they sent me some incredible photos of what they made!

Here are some of the things they said about the food:

“The fried orbs were particularly a hit! We cut up grape uncrustables and wrapped them in biscuit dough then rolled them in sugar and did them in the air fryer so they were a gooey pb&j sugar donut! Sadly, I didn’t get any pics of the grape jelly oozing out. The elixir was yellow gatorade mixed with sprite for the kids and beer for the adults.”

I didn’t think there was anyone who could make an edible fairy pie in real life, but they pulled it off and went above and beyond! All of the food and decorations look amazing. I want a Hooty cookie.

Now, we need your help again: this person’s stepdaughter is moving from her K-6 school to middle school, and they want to throw a pride theme graduation party that includes a pride themed jeopardy game with questions about Steven Universe, She-Ra, Kipo, and The Owl House. If you can think of some jeopardy questions for those shows, please send them my way!

there’s just something about low-contrast/pastel/surrealist/childish/whimsical cartoons that scratches a particular niche in my brain.

like, I can’t look at these and not feel a sense of peace and general good vibes

you cannot tell me these aren’t just the nicest

Modern Cartoon Art-style Problem (Why So Many Hate It)

Ever since the trailer of “High Guardian Spice” has been released, comments were flooding that the show is more of Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon, Steven Universe/She-Ra 2.0 (which is bad) and looks more western animation than anime.

So many people (including myself) have a problem with modern cartoons style, but before I begin stating the issues, I have to tell you how the hatred all started.

Ever since the beginning of cartoons, it has been slowly growing such as in 1930s - 1940s, it was black and white cartoons

1958 - 1980s was Hanna-Barbera style cartoons

1980s cartoons was muscularly and to sell toys to children

Then in the 1990s - early 2010s, that’s when cartoons had a huge change. They didn’t have a similar art style, in fact they were all different towards each and that what makes the time unique to others

Different art-styles cartoons

CGI cartoons

Anime-inspired cartoons

However, by the mid 2010s, cartoons has become oversimplified, lazy and uninspired. Making it a big letdown for cartoons for having to downgrade in cartoonish art-style.

What makes it worst is that most of the protagonist of each show have a similar head design, making it less unique and creative.

It’s also disappointing that it’s 2020s and cartoons are getting downgraded, but everything else like  video games, anime, and comics, are evolving. They went from this

To this

It’s upsetting as well that indie games have a better cartoonish art style than what modern cartoons are putting out

In conclusion, the reason why so many people have a problem with modern cartoons is they went back from being cartoonish and had different variants to more simple art-style, making people feel that they downgrade themselves. I truly hope in the future that cartoons have a better art-style.

Wrong. This is just wrong and vastly undermining tons of artists work. As someone who does character designs in a broad range of styles i find this analysis infuriating. Anyone with a functioning brain can tell all the shows shown to prove the point that modern western cartoon artstyles are “lazy” “the same” and “oversimplified” can tell this is blatantly and obviously wrong from the covers you used to prove your fucking point.

I WILL FUCKING STRANGLE YOU MY IMMESSURABLE HATRED FOR IDIOTS LIKE YOU CANNOT BE CONTAINED.

YOU KNOW WHAT DOUBLE FUCK YOU - I WASNT EVEN GONNA PROVE MYSELF BUT NOW I HAVE TO PICK APART THIS IMAGE CAUSE PEOPLE WITH DICKS FOR BRAINS BRING THIS UP ALL THE TIME

First off, why the fuck is gumball even in here? He’s from a show that incorporates a wide variety of mediums including stop motion, live action film, photo bashing, and 3d animation. This artstyle is only used for a few characters in the show.

Next of all- fuck you these are just faces. Faces are like the least fucking important oart of a characters design when it comes to animation. YOU HEARD ME RIGHT IM GONNA SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK. WHEN IT COMES TO ANIMATIONS FACES ARE THE LAST OF YOUR PROBLEMS.

When animating a characters face has some of the most amount of moving features on it- so having a standard face is actually a good thing that allows animators to focus more on giving better facial expressions and more movements in the face. You ever wonder why 99% of anime just open and close the mouth where western animation actually makes characters move their moths to make syllables? Thats because most animes are lazy as fuck and the animation is only good when its a fight scene. Western animation prioritises the quality of the animation over the complexity and detail of the art, making a much more cohesive viewing experience.

So body types. Firstly, since we already picked gumball out because the show he’s from actually uses a gigantic variety of techniques that took a shit ton of work to use cohesively we can move onto the next character.

Star from her show

Just look at how cluttered her design is. Its not very great for animation but oh look theres some of that detail you supposedly want.

Notice how star has defined segments in her arms and her hair has pinted edges, notice that her nose is shaped like a triangle that points upward. Notice how her ears have lines in them to gesture towards the inside of an ear. These are all traits she does not share in comon with any of the examples innthis image. Star’s head height compared yo the rest of her body gives her the proportions are more differebt than Stevens and Dippers. Her arms are somewhat slender but they arent thin noodles either and her eyes are oval shaped. He has boots that look like a dinosaur with a horn and teeth. And before you go rattling on about how her head has the same shape- fuck off I already saud thats not important at all, especially when its an organic shape thats actually pretty difficult to draw consistently.

Steven on the other hand, has a very stocky build and is more rounded overall than star is. His nose points down as well. He’s more squat and is clearly menat to look younger than star. For reasons considering how inconsistent steven universe is with characters this is as far as ill go to talk about him. He wears very simple sandals. Cause steven universe when it comes to consistency with its caharcters is probably the only lazy show like ever.

Here’s dipper. He has a circular nose, both his arms and legs are noodly. He is the most cartoony in style out of the three and if you watched their shows you’d pick up on that immediately because his show started out being the most actually funny. His eyes are also circles and they’re also very close together. He has his signature hat which doesnt seem like much until you realize he wears it like 80% of the time. His vest jacket thing is so simplified it could be classified as an illusion but you could still inderstand that its one of those weird jacket vest things i dont know what theyre called i dont know how anyone likes those things. His hair is also rounded. Anyone who watched gravity falls would know that gravity falls is not lazy so why the fuck do you need me to spoon feed this to you.

To comment more on this, i am reminded of that Gintama moment where they had to pick out charcaters from silhouettes showing how every Gintama character was “basic” due to undefining features where as shonen protags were easily distinguishable. Its not about a “general head shape” because as the pervious person said they have all these different defining chracteristics. Such as hair shape and size and dippers hat.

But if you actually watched the show you would see the animations themselves, even if the art style is simplistic, are pretty good. Just watch the intro to Gravity Falls. That scene where Dipper fumbles the candle that is pretty good animation.

But also this isn’t just an issue with animators and cartoonist being lazy. Its about cartoonist ans animators being but on time crunches to prodice material while being payed crap for it. After years of the industry treating them poorly, why put in so much effort to make the art style hyper stylized l, when instead you could make the animation a little better, make the stories something you can approve of and interesting, and get your crappy paycheck. Its a shitty thing to think about yes, but in all honesty its what it is.

When a Protagonist Never End Up With Anyone

Wherever a cartoon presents romance, they will always have the protagonist ending up with someone

Luz and Amity

Catra and Adora

Star and Marco

Kim and Ron

Phineas and Isabella and many, many more

However, there are only two cartoons where they have their protagonists not ending up with a major character that  they formed a very close bond with, but never form a romantic relationship and or had dated but ended up breaking up and they don’t even get back together, and they are

Finn Mertern from Adventure Time

Mordecai from Regualr Show

Those shows took more of a realistic approach to romance by having it be more complicated than two people loving each other. It didn’t shy away from being messy and showing the audience that love isn’t simple, it requires a lot of work and that’s something you don’t see a lot in cartoons, especially in kid cartoons. Throughout the whole series, they were chasing after a girl for a long time, trying their hardest to be with them but failed, leading them heartbroken.

Although they were heartbroken for not getting the girl they wanted, they have their best friends to cheer them up

Jake searches a new love interest for Finn for Princess Bubblegum is way too old for him

After Margret declines on becoming Mordecai boyfriend and leaves for univserity,  Mordecai becomes depress, but his friends help him get out of that funk and actually did cheer him up.

They did at one point had a love interest before, but they messed it up.

Mordecai couldn’t decide to either be with Margret or C.J, so he decided to confess and break up with C.J during his friend’s wedding.

Finn manipulates Flame Princess by using her to fight Ice King for his own weird satisfying dream. When he told her the truth, they broke up

Thankfully, after a long time thinking of what they have done, they decided to make up with them

Mordecai and Margaret decided to stay as just friends

Finn finally realizes what he did was wrong and finally reconciles to Flame Princess, and her response was he grew up. They didn’t go back together but stayed as friends.

And then the boldest moves I’ve seen is they both ended with other people

While it would’ve been nice to have the characters ending up with their first-ever romantic relationship, but it shows them they finally moved on and had matured.

Regular Show and Adventure Time did what cartoons won’t do and is that having their protagonist not ending up with any other major character. It’s a good message to tell children, teens, and even adults that you’ll never end up with the person you share a close connection or having a romantic relationship doesn’t guarantee will last forever and that’s fine. It’s important to tell the viewers that and it’s something that I hope cartoons will do more in the future.

The First Cartoon LGBT Representation That No One Talks About

With many people talking about the 2010s cartoons being progressive by  representing LGBT such as

LGBT weddings

Main characters confirming their gay/lesbian/bi

and side characters being gay

But as someone who was born in 2000s in Canada, there’s one cartoon LGBT representation that I barely hear anyone talk about and that is Jean from 6teen.

She first appeared on the 89th episode of the show where Nikki befriends her and was curios if she’s lesbian or not.  Unlike most shows where they have to hints that they are gay and show it by the end, 6teen just spill the beans by having her say “Yes, I’m into girls”.

And then they show her going to prom with a girl

This is probably the first cartoon show that represent LGBT in the most chillest way by telling that she’s into girls. No hints, no waiting till the end of the series or anything, just flat out saying she’s a lesbian.
