The first Muppet created by Jim Henson to rise to stardom was Rowlf the Dog in 1962 for a Purina Dog Chow commercial. The ads were aired in Canada from 1962-1963. Rowlf was also one of the first Muppets designed by Don Sahlin.

Rowlf the Dog used to play the ukulele, the trombone and the piano on The Jimmy Dean Show. When he joined The Muppet Show, he left most of his musical skills behind and became The Muppet Show's resident piano player.
