eldest daughter syndrome and gifted kid syndrome are some great examples of phrases used to talk about specific kinds of trauma that the internet has taken and turned into "boo hoo these people arent special anymore so theyre lashing out!!" it was never about that you fucking cunts

eldest daughter sydrome is about a very specific trauma that comes with being expected to parent for younger siblings and even your parents as a literal child and how badly it fucks you and your perception of yourself and what you're capable of doing up. gifted kid syndrome is about how a "smart" label is slapped onto kids at a horribly young age and then they are repeatedly denied help forced to do more and more work never taught socialization or study skills and then berated and treated like a disappointment when they're human beings instead of little intelligence machines. god.

i was fucking right about this honestly. most phrases like this are about certain kinds of trauma people have faced not about some kind of fucking superiority complex

#i honestly think a better term for 'eldest daughter syndrome' is 'parentification'

the only “good cop” allowed in media is commissioner gordon, and ONLY if the writer actually commits to the idea that even though he is the one in charge, he cannot affect any change because police, as an institution, are inherently corrupt. gordon is allowed to stay only because his mission ultimately fails. that’s the point

FURTHERMORE, the reason he doesn’t want barbara to be a cop isn’t because it’s dangerous or whatever. enough of the overprotective father crap. it’s because he knows exactly what babs is capable of and that she’s so much better than the police, and to join the police would be to not only limit what she can do, but very likely corrupt her in the process, and neither of those things are in the ballpark of acceptable

THAT’S WHY he works with batman. he knows he’s failed. he knows he’ll never succeed. he knows the only person who can keep the city safe is someone who exists outside the institution. that’s why he doesn’t say anything when babs becomes batgirl or oracle. he always knew she’d end up on that path, he just never knew it’d be with a costume and code name until it happened

AND YES this includes dick. dick should not be a cop, ever, and if you must hes a cop for like. a month. two months tops, before he fucking quits because he realizes what he’s doing is not only ineffectual, but actively harmful. but like. the kid who witnessed his parents’ murder and could identify the murderer but was brushed off by police and sent to juvie by an ineffectual system SHOULD NOT fucking grow up to become a cop??????? hello?? his ENTIRE ORIGIN STORY is about how the legal system is crap and justice can only truly be served by free acting agents

Eeeeeeeh. To an extent. The police in Gotham are Rotten to the core, they’re just the worst, it’s good to be a cop in Gotham because they’re all on the take. Any hint of ideals of serving the community they grew up in is tainted because the cops in that community were part of, if not, THE problem. It is a broken ruined system. Then Gordon arrives. Either from Chicago or a Gotham native, it doesn’t matter, what matters is he is beaten and broken. He is completely ruined by the city and it’s corruption. Never to the extent that he Gives into it though. He endures, he fights, he comes to blows with the vigilante Batman at first because he’s a cop and Batman in the eyes of the law is a criminal,it’s that simple. Only in Gotham City, it’s never that simple.

Gordon ends up commissioner and with Batman works to clean the city. It works there are documented stories where it’s out right stated that Gordon and Batman actively clean up the city services, not much maybe not enough but it’s an amount that’s note worthy. And yeah Gordon in his experience knows being a cop is shit. He doesn’t want Babs to be exposed to the danger, the cantina culture, the small slices of your soul it takes. And she still gets shot, she still gets put in the cross hairs. And through this all, through an utterly evil plan to make a demented point, Gordon still clings to a structure, a moral high ground shared by Batman. By the book. No “unjust killing.” Now this opens up a whole ethical and legal debate I’m neither qualified or interested in discussing. But I see the journey of Gordon and Dick facing something completely impossible.

Fixing a system the is naturally corrupting. It’s an impossible situation but that’s why Gordon and Dick are truely super heroic. They take on the impossible. When Dick’s a cop he sets out to do what Gordon did, which is limit or out right remove the taint in the system. That’s the message I like to take from this. It’s an impossible task. They’re going to try anyway.
