ok so

everyone knows about this meme, right?

but does anyone else know the woman who made the food? no? time to educate!

This is “Mother Mary”, the owner of Blackberry’s mother.

She made all the cakes for the restaurant while it was open. Chef Gordon Ramsay tried her red velvet cake, and spoke this meme-able line:

He then called Mary over, complimented her food, and gave her a peck on the cheek.

Look how happy she was to hear that!!!

anyways, I hope she has been able to continue her love for baking since the restaurant closed down.

For these who don’t know: The restaurant she worked at closed down but she left before that and opened her own bakery, that’s apparently very successful!

She has a youtube channel where she shares recipes and cooking advice!

She is a Queen!

She’s gotta be good if she’s able to impress Gordon Ramsey like that to the point of an iconic meme.

We Were All Wounded at Wounded Knee by Redbone plays in the background of the Tik Tok.

White text starts at the top of the screen, displaying information. “The song you are hearing was not allowed to be played on U.S radio stations in 1970’s”.

The dancer makes hoops go from Eagle to Earth form.

“It created by a popular Native American band called Redbone and it hit number 1 charts all over Europe.”

“The song raised awareness about what happened at Wounded Knee”

They finish the Earth form, centering themself. “Let’s get it trending”.

Screen switches to the Tik Toker’s name and username, James Jones / @notoriouscree

the intertitle is a bit misleading: a few us radio stations did ban it from play, though most didn’t (it even got a sizable amount of play from college stations). BUT the bigger issue was that every US record label refused to distribute it for a very long time, forcing the artists to travel in Europe in order to get it produced and forcing people in the US to rely on reimporting the music from Europe. and this also forced many stations which didn’t ban it from play to not play it anyway, as they couldn’t source copies to play!

Friendly PSA

I think I'd like to discuss cultural appropriation.

Cultural appropriation, by definition, is the adoption of a minority culture's dress, cuisine, music, or otherwise, by the dominant — and usually historically oppressive — culture.

A POC wearing jeans and a t-shirt and straightening their hair is not "cultural appropriation". That's just survival, born of being ridiculed or attacked for wearing traditional garb.

A white individual wearing a war bonnet? Absolutely cultural appropriation, because of the subjugation that Indigenous peoples endured at the hands of white colonists.

However, I would also like to point out that simply being interested in another culture is not cultural appropriation. Taking the time to learn about another culture is not cultural appropriation. Decorating your room with items made and procured from another culture is not cultural appropriation. Partaking in a festival hosted by said culture, eating food prepared by said culture, or even cooking it yourself at home or for friends, is not cultural appropriation.

But think twice before donning henna/mehndi if it isn't done by an artist from a culture in which it features prominently, or hosting a Cinco de Mayo "fiesta" just to wear fake-ass sombreros and get drunk without the knowledge that that isn't even a very major holiday to begin with.

This isn't about exclusion, as some would assume. This is about education, and education leads to genuine appreciation.

Some tips on writing Latino OCs/characters

  • Avoid the stereotype of the sex-siren “fiesty” Latino tropes: This stereotype does more harm than good, as almost all classic TV representation for Latinos is shown as the big hypersexualized character. By boiling down a Latino character to simply their sexual appeal, it denies them of their cultural identification if they do not fit what non-Latinos imagine all of them look like.
  • Not all Latinos speak Spanish: In fact, many Latinos do not speak Spanish that often or at all. Many times, non-bilingual/Spanish speaking individuals will write Latino characters “slipping” into speaking Spanish. This, obviously, does not happen in real life. If a Latino says something in Spanish then they meant to say it in Spanish. Here are some realistic reasons why a Latino character could say something in Spanish/Spanglish:
  • They are speaking to their grandparents or other people who only speak that language
  • For emphasis. I would sometimes speak to my partner in Spanish because I felt as though I could express myself better and more naturally (also ‘te amo’ feels more impactful than ‘I love you’, but that just may be a personal thing), but this did not occur often.
  • They are short phrases that any non-Spanish speaker could pick up on. Hola, gracias, de nada, mucho mejor, qué onda, madre/parde, casa, por qué are all ones I use around my friends sometimes. Again, sometimes.
  • There are others I am sure, but please be careful when writing a Latino character speaking Spanish. As a Latino living in America, if I am be honest, unless speaking with other Spanish speaking individuals, I do not use the language all too often (just like any other language, weird how that happens).
  • Do your research naming Latino characters: Please do not simply look up “Hispanic names” and choose the ones you like off of a list. If all your names look something like “Diego Rodriguez” then you are doing a bad job. Here are some tips:
  • 69% of South America is Catholic and 19% is Protestant. Using that information, you are bound to have a lot of religious names. All of my siblings are named after biblical figures. Some examples I see a lot are: Rebecca, Isaiah, Claudia, Gabriela, Marcus, Elizabeth etc.
  • In Latino culture, many times children take both their parents last names so their names would be hyphenated. For example: Father’s last name could be Perez-ABC and Mother’s could be Ramirez-XYZ so the child’s name would be Perez-Ramirez.
  • This isn’t a hard and fast rule. If only one of the parents is Latino than most often they will simply do what most of Western culture does and take the father’s last name as the family name.
  • Represent many aspects of Latino culture: I far too often only see Mexican Latinos, which is great, but also there are many other countries/places to represent (Cuba, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Peru, Chile, Honduras and more)
  • Latinos have a variety of hair colors and skin tones and body types, make them: Afro-Latino people exist, write them. White passing Latinos exist, write them (though if you are only ever writing Latinos with pale olive skin and eurocentric features, you’re doing it badly). Latino people with thick curly hair and bold features exist. Talk about it. Latinas are not just your vessel to write about “thicc” or curvy women. Petite Latinos and especially plus sized latinos need representation. Represent them.
  • Latinos do not just eat ‘Mexican’ food: Stop associating all your characters with tacos and burritos.
  • If you do have Latino characters don’t be afraid to make them queer or disabled or anything else under-represented.
  • Avoid stereotypes altogether: The maid, the drug dealer, the sex symbol, the immigrant, we get it. That’s all we see in the media. Look up stereotypes, avoid them. It’s not “making a statement”, it’s racist, stop it.
  • If you describe any Latino person as “spicy” or “exotic”………………… :) you know
  • Make sure the connection to their cultural background makes sense: Some Latinos have a strong connection to their country and culture, some do not. Make sure it makes sense for their family history, background, etc.

This is all I can sort of think of off the top of my head. Latino people, please feel free to add on with anything else (my experiences are a bit limited as a Puerto Rican living in America, so the more perspectives the merrier). White people and non-Latino POC’s can comment questions but please don’t clown (no “I am not latino but also…!)

Please reblog, this is important for non-Latino creators!

Some important tips on making/writing Asian OCs

  • Try to stay away from the smart/nerdy Asian stereotype. Plenty of Asian people are very smart, just like in any other race. However, stereotypical racial representation is worse than none at all. By all means, you can have an intelligent Asian character but make sure their intelligence is not the main factor of their personality.
  • Write more than just East and light-skinned Asians. In most cases, if an author wants to have some Asian representation they’ll throw in a Chinese or Japanese character. And while yes, there aren’t very many Chinese and Japanese characters as opposed to white, there are even less Southeast, South, and Middle Eastern Asian representation. Not all Asians have light skin, even in East Asia. There are plenty of Korean, Chinese, and Japanese people with dark skin!
  •  Do your research when naming Asian characters. Unless you want to end up like J.K. Rowling who’s sole Asian character was named Cho Chang. Do not just throw a last name with an ‘ong’ or an ‘ang’ at the end.
  • Represent plus size Asians. Asian women are stereotyped as petite, and just like white plus size women, plus size Asian women need representation in media.
  • Asian people don’t eat everything with chopsticks. I didn’t think that needed to be said, but here we are.
  • Create Asian characters with an alternative fashion sense/style. Asians with dyed hair. Asians with piercings. Asians with tattoos.
  • Stay away from the strict parent Asian stereotype. In fact, stay away from every stereotype, okay?
  • Keep in mind, stereotypes for other races aren’t the same for Asian people.
  • By all means, write about Asian culture. BUT MAKE SURE IT IS ACCURATE!!!
  • Write Asian characters who get in trouble and/or are reckless. Asians that swear. Asians that break rules. Asians that get detention.
  • WRITE ATHLETIC ASIANS!!!
  • Do not, under any circumstance, use the word ‘chinky’ to describe an Asian character. Just. Don’t.
  • Asian people face racism too.
  • Don’t fetishize or demonize Asian culture.

Asian people, feel free to add some more on! If you’re white or non-Asian POC do not comment if you reblog! (Unless it’s to say something like, oh nice tips! Or thank you, I didn’t know that!)

If you can, reblog. I haven’t seen any for Asian OCs.

(x)

Can I add

-remember that guy in ATLA who helped Aang unlock his chakras? Don’t. Please, please don’t.

-please don’t write us as evil.

-if you want references to good rep, just ask (me,or any other Asian people you know.)

-if you do have Asian characters, don’t be afraid to make them queer, disabled, or anything else that’s under-represented. We are not just cishet, abled people.

-again, as op said, do Not make them a stereotype. Search up stereotypes. And avoid them. You may want to ask for sensitivity readers too

That’s all I can think of now!

Hey just gonna add some more stuff

-reiterating OP’s first point, the smart/nerdy yet socially inept Asian? Don’t do that. Please.

-Asia is full of several diverse cultures and many different religions. Often times, religion becomes a part of the culture. Please, please do your research before you utterly butcher one or both of these.

-Elaborating on the above point, I have read quite a few books where a character (mostly from Asia) who either wears a hijab or continuously uses Allah’s name, but are as far from Muslims as one can get. Its cringey and honestly sometimes just painful to see. A few words and a head scarf do not make a Muslim. (I am sure there are other religions as well as cultures who have possibly suffered a bias like this , but since I don’t know them as well as my own, I’ll refrain from commenting upon any)

So yeah that’s pretty much all I have to add, if any one has more tips for Asian characters, please, feel free to add them here!

Important additions!!!

speaking from the perspective of an east asian:

  • asian people are not anime. anime aesthetic blogs and weeb culture =/= asian culture. do not solely base your view of us based off anime lmao
  • asian cultures also aren’t interchangeable. specify your asian characters’ ethnicity past “asian”. don’t limit yourself to only east asians, south asians exist and are severely underrepresented in western media.
  • wikipedia pages on stereotypes of east asians in the us and stereotypes of south asians
  • stop making rat jokes abt asian characters it’s been historically used as anti-asian (especially anti-japanese) propaganda
  • east asian men have historically been portrayed as emasculated and sexless compared to white people or as sexual threats to white women, as well as misogynistic. asian girls are either fetishized or deemed less sexy than white women. don’t <3
  • on tumblr, especially in ship art, light-skinned asian characters are periodically portrayed as comparatively feminine and submissive to their white counterparts whereas darker-skinned characters are cast as the more dominant and aggressive half. this is a trend tied to colorism in general. avoid it.
  • almost every single asian character ive ever seen (by white ppl) on this site lacks body hair. what the fuck we arent made of porcelain give us hair like Human Beings. draw us with arm hair, leg hair, mustaches, don’t only uplift us when we cater to western standards of white beauty
  • also if ur writing abt an asian character and u describe their skin as “porcelain” and emphasize the Pure Whiteness of it…………….. fuck you
  • yes asian people largely have dark brown hair and eyes
  • yes asian characters who lack those traits are still just as asian they don’t lose that status just bc theyre blonde (re: people saying reigen from mp100 isn’t japanese because he doesnt “look” japanese)
  • your “me no speakee engrish” jokes arent funny.
  • not every asian character needs to be associated with tea. or sushi or katanas or cone-shaped hats or rice
  • to be clear. a feminine asian character is not inherently bad. an asian character drinking tea isn’t inherently racist. it’s the fact that 1. these are used as the Main Indicators that these characters are ‘authentically’ asian and 2. they are about as deep as most white portrayals of asian culture go. the overlap with colorism means that, largely, asian ‘representation’ in white circles is largely light-skinned, inaccurate depictions of east asians that border on caricature.
  • support asian artists i promise we will do a better job of portraying our own culture than a white person ever could lol

I  would love to add more to this as a 2nd-gen Vietnamese-American person, especially for names! (these mostly apply for Asian Americans, can’t speak for Non-american asians)

-Naming characters using names from their country isn’t bad but it’s important to know why and how their names were chosen. Are they non-white and non-american (NWNA)? Makes sense for their name to be from their country. Did they move to America and are a 1st-generation immigrant and decided to pick an english name? Or are they a 2nd-generation Asian-American whose parents were from a different country? 2nd-gen immigrants usually have english names to fit into American Society.

-Not every Asian American knows how to speak their country’s language. Some only know English but that doesn’t make them any less as anyone else. (aka me)

-Having an Asian character with strict parents isn’t so harmful but to not do anything else with it and not actually explore the child-parent relationship and the impact towards the child/character and just use the stereotype to make them different from other characters and to mock them is.

-I would love to see more Asian American characters who are smart but have imposter syndrome/gifted kid syndrome and are burnt out.

-just in case someone reading this doesn’t have common sense, don’t make eating dog/cat jokes. or any uncommon animal eating jokes. bat jokes especially. Even if it’s an Asian person saying it.

Also korean people =/= kpop. Koreaboo culture =/= korean culture. I cannot stress this enough

POC in Goth/Punk/Alternative Music

Relaunching this again for a future ‘not-post’, but something better! Thank you to everyone who continued to send in suggestions. Submit here.

As an addition to the goth/post-punk/alt band masterpost, here’s a list of bands featuring members of color. Most are influential, others new discoveries or future freak gods. Thanks to research and helpful readers, here’s a bit of sick sound suitable for all taste buds:

Goth, dark or industrial:

Punk, hardcore or post-hardcore:

  • Bad Brains - why most of the bands on this list even exist.
  • Death - not to be confused with the metal band of the same way. Not that you could confuse the members in any way.
  • Rough Francis - founded by the sons of David Hackney of Death.
  • Pure Hell - afropunk taken literally.
  • X-Ray Spex - Poly Styrene was the energy and feel of the band. Actually, she was just energy and feel period. Fun fact: she was also bipolar.
  • Radkey - Rad.
  • TMGE - Japanese band named “Thee Michelle Gun Elephant” or as they prefer: JAPANESE BAND NAMED “THEE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT”.
  • Tamar Kali - powerful musician, especially known for “Boot”.
  • The Objex - Feloney Melony’s got a wicked hawk and voice.
  • Stiffed - Santi White now performs solo as Santigold.
  • Cerebral Ballzy
  • Suicidal Tendencies
  • Midori - great jazz-punk fusion band.
  • The Redscare
  • Le Butcherettes - Mexican garage punk band.
  • Atari Teenage Riot
  • NOFX
  • Stalin
  • The Bags
  • Dev Hynes - a British musician who started out in a punk band Test Icicles then went solo as a folk/indie musician as Lightspeed Champion and now is doing an electronic/R&B thing as Blood Orange.
  • L’Arc-en-Ciel - Okay, so these guys are Japan’s other most famous export. These guys got known outside of japan for doing some major anime theme songs (Fullmetal Alchemist, Gundam 00, NANA live action movie, etc) and were the first Japanese act to headline Madison Square Garden (Japanese rock bands really like New York for some reason). Their bassist tetsuya (formally known as tetsu) gets bonus points for being one of Japan’s only out LGBT celebrities (he’s Bi).
  • Doll$Box
  • Letlive
  • The Chariot
  • Trashtalk
  • Gogol Bordello - self described as “gypsy punk”. Singer Eugene Hütz is Russian-Ukranian with Romani heritage and born with a ‘stache. Nearly crazier than Little Big and Korpiklaani combined.
  • Blackfire
  • The Bots - punk duo made of two brothers.
  • Bow Wow Wow - IIIIIII Waaaant Caaandy!!!
  • Love Equals Death
  • Ritualization - blackened death metal from Orléans, France
  • Teengenerate
  • Ten Grand
  • Letlive
  • Martin Sorrondeguy - spoke out about US based Latino issues in many of his lyrics and was involved in bands Los Crudos, Limp Wrist and Needles.
  • Ghost Town

Metal, funk/rap/reggae metal fusion or core:

  • Blasphemy - Black metal, the biggest irony on earth as Caller of the Storms remains one of the rare black musicians within the genre.
  • Babymetal - this Japanese trio is more metal than a viking woman on her period in the middle of a battlefield drinking the blood of her enemies to the sound of Immortal…for some at least.
  • Wicked Wisdom - Will Smith’s wife get a band?? Yes she Will.
  • Unlocking the Truth - these 13 year olds played in the streets of NYC before they opened for Living Colour.
  • Absolace - amazing metal from Dubai.
  • Living Colour - better than Dead Monochrome.
  • King’s X - more hard rock, but hey.
  • Bionic Jive - one of the better hip-hop/metal fusions.
  • Skindred - check out the album “Roots Rock Riot”.
  • Ego Fall - a Chinese folk metal band and also Corbac’s fave. Mixing tradition with heavier sounds.
  • Static X - Japanese guitarist Koichi Fukuda & Mexican-American bassist Tony Campos.
  • Sepultura - the founding members are all Brazilian, currently their lead singer (Derrick Green) is black. “Arise” is a massive album of pure metal awesomeness.
  • Straight Line Stitch
  • Blood Stain Child
  • Sasamaso
  • Tenger Cavalry - a folk metal band based out of Bejing who describe their style as “Mongolian folk metal”. Like this and you’d probably enjoy Ego Fall.
  • Cthonic - Taiwanese metal band who’s lead singer is also the president for the Taiwanese branch of Amnesty International. Most of their music deals with their goal of an independent Taiwan and they’re really REALLY great.
  • Myrath
  • God Forbid
  • Invasion - a stoner/psych-metal band fronted by a valkyrie space wizard out of London.
  • Vodun - like invasion, marries punk, psychedelic, and doom metal influenced instrumentals with soul influenced vocals to create a unique and original takes on doom metal.
  • Sevendust
  • Animals as Leaders - most suggested band on this list and for good reason.
  • Veil of Maya
  • Oceano
  • Body Count - Ice T’s metal band rules. It would be a little tastier with ice cubes though.
  • Hirax - pioneering thrash/speed metal band (with hardcore influences). Katon De Pena is one of the most distinctive vocalists of the then-burgeoning California metal scene. Though they never achieved the success of some of their contemporaries like Metallica or Slayer, they have long been an insiders’ favorite and cited as an influence by bands ranging from Napalm Death to Cannibal Corpse to Darkthrone.
  • Infectious Grooves
  • Melechesh - an Assyrian black metal band originating from Jerusalem whose lyrical themes include Mesopotamian mythology and occultism.
  • Iron Man - American doom metal band with PoC members.
  • Sex Machineguns - Japanese speed metal band.
  • Hibria - Brazilian power metal band.
  • Metallica - their first lead guitarist was Lloyd Grant. Here he is in their first recording.
  • Gevolt - Yiddish band from Israel.
  • The Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza
  • Gridlink
  • X Japan - Probably Japan’s most famous metal export. These guys are the reason Visual Kei (basically Japan’s gothic metal scene) exists. All those flashy JRock bands wouldn’t exist without X Japan. They also recently just played a huge show at Madison Square Garden.
  • Maximum the Hormone - Also known as “the guys that did that weird opening and ending to death note”, MTH do a fantastic combination of metal, punk, and even pop. The best part about MTH is that their lyrics don’t make sense even when translated so you can just have mindless fun listening to them even if you understand Japanese.
  • Suffocation - one of the most influential death metal acts of all time. Terrance Hobbs’ incredible mastery of the guitar allowed the band to blend complex technicality into the genre without sacrificing raw brutality.
  • Versailles Philharmonic Quintet
  • Suicide Silence
  • The Crimson Armada
  • For Today
  • Glass Cloud
  • Heaven in Her Arms
  • Here comes the Kraken
  • Issues
  • Periphery
  • Reflections
  • System of a Down
  • Fear Nuttin Band
  • Year of the Dragon - founder was a member of Fishbone.
  • Dir En Grey
  • Skyharbor
  • Spineshank
  • Coal Chamber
  • Ill Niño
  • Flagitious Idiosyncrasy in Dilapidation (FID) - Formed in Tokyo. Rad ladies playing some super hard grindcore.
  • Sarcofago - Brazilian band
  • Acrassicauda - Iraqi heavy metal. There is a film called “Heavy Metal in Baghdad”, about the band. Another documentary called Global Metal, which is by the same director as Heavy Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey, is highly recommended.
  • Sigh - one of the first japanese black mack metal bands led by a fierce lady.
  • Sabbat - Japanese black/thrash.
  • Blood Stain Child - rather epic sounding Japanese metal band with contrasting vocals and instrumentals.
  • Gallhammer - female Japanese extreme metal band of doom. The wickedest chicks, definitely recommend.
  • Avulsed - Spanish death metal band.
  • Necramynth - Korean black metal.
  • Crossfaith - japanese metalcore.
  • Subrosa
  • As they Burn - deathcore band from Paris, France.
  • Wolves and Jackals - blackened thrash/death metal from Atlanta, GA.
  • Infernal Revulsion - brutal death metal from Tokyo, Japan
  • Orange Sky - from Trinidad and Tobago.
  • Monuments - it’s got saxophone and it’s awesome.
  • Ego Likeness
  • Peelander-Z - watch the videos, you’ll be happy you did.
  • For Today - if you’re into Christian metal.
  • Dream Theater - John Myung plays in the influential prog metal band with the aid of his majestic hair.

ok so

everyone knows about this meme, right?

but does anyone else know the woman who made the food? no? time to educate!

KIPO and the Age of Wonderbeasts is AMAZING and why more people should be talking about it!!

I know this isn’t my main for animated series BUT I just watched KIPO and let me tell you it’s so good??? It’s not netflix but for some reason there’s been NO promo at all so i’m changing that!!

ALL main characters are poc (or a bug or a pig)

Kipo is half asian half black (and purple but that’s just an extra bonus imo), Wolf is black and Benson is brown/black/of unknown heritage (as far as I know)

Also???

Benson is gay and he just straight up SAYS so

Like, “Ya I’m gay” no hinting, no stereotypes no beating around the bush, he’s just gay that’s it and the entire scene is super natural?

It has giant megadogs

And they’re super cute. So many mutes are super cute

Wolf’s backstory and connected character arc are AMAZING and she has so much more room for growth

Like, I don’t want to spoil anything but this four feet tall girl has issues BUT She’s not just a “though as nails” archetype, she’s a real person who’s carrying a really difficult past with her and her whole character journey is so satisfying!!

There’s like a hundred more reasons like singing woodcutter cats and lesbian rock and roll snakes and nerd wolves that make musicals titled “everything we know about the universe so far” but you’ll just have to see that for yourself!! Please watch this show it deserves more attention and a second season!

Carmen Sandiego and Maria Vargas Aponte don’t have much in common. One is a fictional criminal mastermind who travels the world to avoid capture, the other is a very real Texas-based video game blogger who makes an honest living as a computer engineer.

But when Netflix released the trailer for its new series “Carmen Sandiego,” which drops on Jan. 18 and features Gina Rodriguez as the voice of the main character, Vargas Aponte watched it “more than 15 times.“
