Magic Girls help to remind us that are femininity isn’t a weakness, but something that can be empowering!

This year marks the 75th anniversary of an early example of the "mahou shoujou" manga, Super Rose by Kyuuta Ishikawa about a scientist's daughter named Mayumi Makimura who obtains an alien costume that causes her to go into action as a crime fighting superhero! To commemorate this occasion, here are the first four of five volumes translated into English.

I was thinking about this today all of a sudden and realized there is such a huge missed opportunity going on with remaking Rainbow Brite, Strawberry Shortcake and even Lady Lovelylocks.

I mean, instead of remaking them as Johnny Test rip-off’s with unnecessary gag comedy (like with the newest incarnation of Rainbow Brite in which Starlite looks like that one beefed up pegasus from MLP) or make it fit your inane notions of “girl’s show” by not having villains (like the current Shortcake at the moment), or by not even remaking it period (like the newest, oh wait you didn’t even try Hasbro); why not remake them as… MAGIC GIRL SHOWS!

I’m serious, Rainbow Brite would make the most excellent case to turn into an American version of the magic girl genre, I mean, enough of the RB fandom also grew up with Sailor Moon. Imagine it! Rainbow Brite is able to transform into her magic girl self with the help of star sprinkles and her Magic Belt, and she also has her own magic companions. Same goes for Strawberry Shortcake and oh god, even Lady Lovelylocks. There is a serious missed opportunity going on because girls love action shows just as much as boys do. It’s absolutely dumb what’s being done with remakes according to “gender role’d” into, as I’ve seen MLP was dealt with (Princess Promenade anyone? That’s why a lot of fans would like to forget that). We love adventure, we love magic and villains and cool shit! Don’t deny your female audience that! 

But imagine!

MAGIC GIRL RAINBOW BRITE!!!

You can turn the other color kids into Magic People too! And the same goes for the outliers like Moonglow, Tickled Pink, and Stormy! You can make the Dark Princess an evil Magic Girl!

Why can’t anyone think of that in regards to a remake of Rainbow Brite?! It’s so simple!
