WonderCon 2024 Sets GARGOYLES 30th Anniversary Panel With Reunion Of The Crew And Cast.

In celebration of all things comics, sci-fi, horror, cartoons and general genre entertainment geekery, WonderCon returns to the Anaheim Convention Center in Southern California from Friday, March 29 to Sunday, March 31. Comic-Con San Diego’s more manageably-sized sibling event nevertheless has plenty to pack your schedule if you love all things animation.

Gargoyles fans are getting a treat as for the series 30th anniversary a reunion panel is among the events of the convention.

30 Years of Gargoyles - Sunday, March 31

  • 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. | North 200A
Gargoyles, an animated series that mixed mythology, complex themes and Shakespearean storylines, instantly attracted viewers of all ages in its first season. Though betrayed by the very ones they have sworn to protect, Goliath, his family, and Eliza taught impressionable minds about trust and understanding the other side. A cartoon that stood out from its peers at the time, it spawned comics, video games, and a newly announced live-action reboot. Cast, crew, writers and others will discuss how Gargoyles has inspired fan conventions and why it’s been consistently named one of the best animated series for three decades.

Obviously I couldn’t put all of them due to the 10 options limit, but I highly doubt that a lot of people would vote for Shnookums and Meat or The Mighty Ducks.

For me, the most entertaining show with equal amounts of humor and angst, and character driven plot, was Darkwing Duck. It was my absolute favorite show as a kid, and I still remember the plots for almost all 91 episodes. Meanwhile I watched Ducktales, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, Talespin etc reruns just as often and bought the dvds for them and I barely remember the plot of two episodes. I don’t know why DWD was memorable and the others weren’t. They are all good shows. But DWD is easily more watchable for me now than the aforementioned. I’m too sensitized to Chip’s squeaky voice to stand watching CDRR anymore. Ducktales 87 is nostalgic but Omg the stereotypes against women, neurodivergence, non American ethnicities, etc makes it painful to watch now. I was used to all those stereotypes as a kid and didn’t even notice them but now the fat shaming and infantilizing of the girl character is triggering for me personally. Thankfully the other Disney Afternoon shows do not suffer like Ducktales 87, and Ducktales 2017 booted those issues to the curb.

Gargoyles was a bit too mature for me when it aired. I couldn’t keep up with the lore, and I saw episodes run out of sequence. Not as badly as with DWD (I remember seeing the episode “Just Us Justice Ducks” and wondering who over half the cast was!) but I do remember being confused when I saw an ep with a grown child of one of the main characters and I had no idea they had even met. Gargoyles would be more watchable for me now but since I don’t have Disney + and I did not buy the dvds, I haven’t gotten caught up on it yet. I personally voted DWD because I have rewatched it all and love about forty of the ninety one episodes, but I don’t mind if Gargoyles wins the poll. It’s another Disney gem that stood out from the crowd and stands the test of time. It also has a new ongoing comic series, just like Darkwing Duck (and Lion King, too, I think) right now.

Dynamite Comics Launches Kickstarter for GARGOYLES Classic Comics As Part Of The Show's 30th Anniversary.

Dynamite Comics and Disney Comics are celebrating the 30th anniversary of Gargoyles with the first-ever Kickstarter campaign featuring brand new graphic novels collecting long out-of-print Gargoyles comic books.

“I’m honestly thrilled that these three volumes will finally give Gargoyles fans easy access to these great stories, including the canon SLG tales!” said Weisman. “I think the Dynamite Kickstarter is a great way for Gargoyles fans to get the word out and to reserve their copies. This could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so I hope our fans don’t miss out!”

The first volume is the hotly anticipated compilation of the first-ever Gargoyles comic series from 1995. This 11-issue title was originally released by Marvel Comics and is set loosely between the first two seasons of the original TV show. The memorable first issue featured a jaw-dropping cover by artist Joe Madureira, one of the biggest superstars of the era from his work on Uncanny X-Men. The series was written by Martin Pasko (Superman) and Mort Todd.

The second and third volumes of the Gargoyles Classic Years will be an incredible treat. From 2006 to 2009, a new Gargoyles comic series was launched from SLG Publishing in association with CreatureComics — the first written by Weisman. The main series, often referred to as “Clan Building,” was joined by a companion title, Bad Guys. Issues #9-12 of Gargoyles and #5-6 of Bad Guys did not see release and were only printed in paperback collections with small print runs. They were produced at a smaller digest size and have been incredibly expensive for years on the secondary market.

The three-volume set is available in multiple variations for different kinds of fans and collectors. Each is available as either hardcover or paperback. Deluxe hardcover editions with signed tip-in pages are being offered. For the Gargoyles diehards, the most premium option will be the Gargoyles 30th Anniversary Premier Editions limited to just 1,000 copies each!

In addition to the books at the center of this celebration, the campaign will offer several add-ons for backers, including lithograph prints of Jae Lee and Amanda Conner’s covers for Dynamite’s Gargoyles #1. The most premium art piece anyone can get will be a deluxe signed and remarqued giclée print of Lee’s Gargoyles art.

In addition to the reprint of the full series, fans can get special facsimile editions of the very first issue with gold or purple foil stamping. Sketch cover options are also available, as well as commissioned original art from Lee. Plus, collector packs of variant cover sets or premium limited editions and metal covers for Dynamite’s series can be added.

Gargoyles Revival Recruits Jae Lee and More for Gorgeous First Issue Covers

Dynamite Entertainment’s upcoming Gargoyles series taps Jae Lee, Amanda Conner, David Nakayama and more for a series of first-issue covers.

Announced during San Diego Comic-Con, Dynamite’s Gargoyles series comes from franchise creator Greg Weisman and will serve as a new “season” for the series that ran from 1994 to 1997.

The publisher released six, incredible-looking covers for the first issue of the series, created by artists Nakayama, Conner, Parrillo, Lesley “Leirix” Li, Lee, Tony Fleecs and more. The covers feature a number of Gargoyles characters fans know and love, including Goliath, Angela, Broadway, Lexington, Elisa Maza and others.

Dynamite said of Nakayama’s involvement in the Gargoyles series, “He was a natural fit given his signature style straddling a modern comics look with elements pulled from Saturday morning cartoons and action figure packaging. Not only is he one of the top names in comics covers, but he’s also lauded for his illustrations for Hasbro’s Marvel Legends line of figures.”

When announcing the series in July, Dynamite said Gargoyles will both continue the storyline from the television series while also being accessible to new fans. Additionally, the publisher previously announced it would be releasing remastered and compiled paperback volumes of the previous Gargoyles comic series. Creators involved in said comics include Conner, Joe Madureira, Jimmy Palmiotti, Martin Pasko, Grant Miehm and Mort Todd. Along with the new comic series, Disney also announced at D23 that Gargoyles Remastered – a remaster of the Sega Genesis classic game – will soon be available for fans to play.

Weisman isn’t the only one returning to the world of Gargoyles in Dynamite’s new series, as Conner also contributed to the 1995 series published by Marvel Comics. “The DC, Marvel, and Vampirella legend started her illustrious career doing many licensed and all-ages titles at Marvel in the 1990s including Barbie, and as the interiors and cover artist for the 1995 Gargoyles series,” Dynamite said. “Now she’s back with a cover featuring all the key cast including their human ally Elisa. Dynamite is set to begin releasing facsimile reprints and collected graphic novels of that series soon, with more details to come.”

Gargoyles #1 is slated to release in December from Dynamite Entertainment. Fans can pre-order the issue at their local comic book shop or look for it on digital platforms, including ComiXology, Kindle, iBooks, Google Play, Dynamite Digital Comics+ and more.
