I still think it's funny how much of Eda's identity just whooshes out the window the second children are involved.
The Owl Lady is a reclusive potion-and-human-junk seller who other than a few dates has no friends and lives in the woods. She's the most powerful witch on the Boiling Isles. She hates school. Her house is alive and it eats people.
Eda the Owl Lady is an awkward crime mom who has an open door policy to her Cool Secret Hideout to basically anyone. She once adopted a child after breaking up with her ex. She's a PTA mom who helps organize events at school. She has two adopted children, at least three latchkey kids, and a baker's dozen of others she's got the paperwork around for if/when they decide to say fuck the man. Her son adopted her. There's footage of her bawling on Penstagram. She once put herself through AA so her kid could eat foods she prefers when the money was low. She gives her living house forehead kisses.
The almost incredulous way that Raine asks Eda about having kids was so great - it really highlighted just how much Eda grew over the years. Raine left Eda because she was closing herself off from loved ones, and for most of their time apart that was still true. But then Eda comes across a baby Titan (by chance? nudged by the Titan of the Boiling Isles?), and her heart starts to open up a little more despite herself. And Eda has so much love to give.
The Oblongs is so funny to me as an adult with a basic knowledge of house placement like. “The Hill” people are a walk away from the poorest, more crime-ridden section of the entire country. There is so goddamn way these people are actually rich snobs. Hill houses sell for REALLY low. They’re middle class posers drowning in debt trying to one-up a lower class neighborhood.
So I’m sleepy but fuck it, thinking about how the basement must have been this horrific, terrible place to Sprig and Polly for so long??? The place they hid in for days after herons killed their parents???? The taste of old coal and soot as the screeching of birds bigger than they know how to measure make a crescendo of death and destruction. The slow creaking of the door opening to their dear old Hop Pop as he gathers them in his arms and weeps because they, at least, are safe. Returning to a Wartwood that’s fallen to shreds and missing various frogs, including their parents. And it’s sat empty for years since, the forbidden boogey man of the Plantar home.
Only for random sasquatch teen Anne Boonchuy to come in and make it her own, scatter teen magazines and prop her favorite tennis racket on a wall. The smell of beetle jerky and the glint of random swords she’d grabbed over time she didn’t know what to do with. And every day it slowly warped from the room Sprig and Polly were in as their parents were killed into Anne’s Room, smth comforting and warm and full of laughter and, somehow, someway, okay to breach again.
Dizzy and Dee Dee parroting their big sister all episode, only for Dolly to see and realize just how it’s affected those around her, was Rlly Good and I loved it.
I’m finally getting around to re-watching Legend Quest and tbh I’m dying at the idea of Teodora having her own form and body back and going to adventure s’more only to realize, oh crud, I have a form and body now. Like she instinctively associates Leo and the others with her astral projecting, so if she time-traveled back it’d be this huge adjustment period.
Teodora being so used to being invisible that she makes comments and snoops and doesn’t realize other people can hear/see her until she’s got a mouth of foot and a handful of precious family heirlooms. Chatting with Don Andres (who, thanks to almost dying, she can still see clearly) and completely missing the confused and worried looks people give her.
Listening without commentary to Leo or someone else going on and then suddenly someone talks to her or touches her arm or something and Teodora just jumping five feet in the air and scrambling to decipher if it’s something sinister only for Leo to be like you’re normal, Teo, they’re just trying to include you. Teodora smacking face-first into soooo many walls.
Teodora: I feel weird. I think I might be dying again Leo: when was the last time you ate or drank anything Teodora: oh yeah, I do that now
