DAZZLING DC LADIES MONTH: DR. LIGHT

first appearance: Crisis on Infinite Earths #4 (1985)

who is she? Kimiyo Hoshi started out as a supervising astronomer in Japan, overseeing a (male) team of astronomers in an observatory. Their work revolved around the strange events occurring because of DC's Crisis on Infinite Earths event. When the men under her charge (and her father) show fear in the face of an approaching anti-matter cloud, she tells them all to bug off and remains behind to study the phenomenon through the telescope on her own. Being in the (arguably) right place at the right time, Kimiyo is hit with a beam of energy which devastates the area around her observatory; this beam was sent by the Monitor, who wanted another hero in the positive ‘verse to help combat the Anti-Monitor, whose anti-matter cloud was continuing to absorb positive Earths. Kimiyo, now given supernatural powers, is given the task of guarding one of the Monitor’s vibrational forks left on Earth, which will help protect it against the Anti-Monitor. Unfortunately, two teen heroes (Starfire and Halo) are sent to destroy the machine, and Kimiyo, unable to communicate with them in English, instead is forced to use her powers to force them back. The first to communicate with her is Superman, who is fluent in several Earth languages.

Later given an understanding of the English language, Kimiyo heads out to help confront the Anti-Monitor. During the battle, she defends Superman to the best of her ability, until Supergirl sacrifices herself and allows Kimiyo to take the unconscious Superman to safety. Kimiyo decides that she has been selfish and needs to be more selfless, like Supergirl, and later joins the fight at the call of the Harbinger, using the energy of a star to blast a hole through the Anti-Monitor. This is later retconned (as in Supergirl is written out of existence, of course, so Kimiyo is given other inspiration for her change of heart).

Kimiyo has been a member of Justice League Europe (where she entered into a relationship with Rising Sun), an ally of the Outsiders, a brief member of the Doom Patrol, and almost a member of the Birds of Prey. When the villainous Doctor Light recovered from the erasing of his memory by the Justice League, he drained Kimiyo of her powers, though this was a temporary loss. Kimiyo also appeared in the series 52 and Infinite Crisis, though due to an article released during 52 on the website about the comic there have been some continuity issues concerning her involvement in these events and the events of Action Comics #838 (2006).

what can she do? Kimiyo was given the power of photonics; she gets most of her energy from the star Vega, which burns bright and hot, thereby giving her almost limitless power. She can absorb light in any form, and use it for making energy constructs, flying, creating forcefields and illusions, phasing through solid matter, and projecting light. Not only that, but she is an accomplished astronomer and also a general scientist and medical doctor.

where can i find her? Recommended reading includes:
