In the new The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder Season 2 trailer, Penny, Trudy, Micheal, Lacienega, Maya, and Dijonay all dress up in princess costumes. They appear to be dressed as Disney princesses.

Lacienega is Elena from Elena of Avalor....

Idk who Dijonay is, maybe Cinderella, Aurora or Lottie....

Penny is Tiana...

Maya is Beyonce from Black is King...

Micheal is clearly Pocahontas...

And finally, Trudy is Belle...

How I draw skin Part 2: DON”T DRAW NATIVE PEOPLE WITH RED SKIN!!!! A tutorial

For the first tutorial on how I draw skin, see the post here.

But seriously, I’ve seen too many drawings of Native characters with literal red/pink skin to count so just in case some of you are having troubles with drawing Native people, I’ve provided a guide for you. Please take my swatches if it helps!! and no more red skinned people, please <0<

Disclaimer: this tutorial is mainly about the artistic depictions of Indigenous Peoples in North America, where the slur and redskin caricature originated, but it would still be racist to draw other non-North/Central/South American Indigenous groups like this so…..don’t.

I dunno if this is the place for it but it might help someone out there remember:

A poem by an actual native person on the actual color of their skin.

My skin is gold

Like cookie dough

Shimmers and folds

Crinkles and rolls

My skin is dun

Wheat in the Sun

Kisses by the rays

Of hot summer days

My skin is Earth

With intrinsic worth

Bright copper tone

Soft earthy loam

^^^ My only point of contention with this is the “too light” bit. Like…. IDK what part of the world OP is from, but in my area there are plenty of band members with skin tones like those examples or lighter. Especially when I went to the southern states, I was surprised by how many native folks were white-passing. But yeah obvs there’s a difference between a white-passing character and a character that’s been whitewashed

It’s not mentioned in this tutorial, but I’ve seen it in other posts by Natives, so I’m going to mention it:

When seeking out your refpics, do your best to find Natives ACTUALLY FROM THE TRIBE YOU ARE DRAWING, or at least from the same geographic area. Not all Natives look the same.

This person is Diné (Navajo).

This person is Blackfoot.

And these people are Iroquois.

Do you notice something here? Wildly different skin tones, facial shapes, and overall body types? Native people are INCREDIBLY diverse.

Make sure you’re representing the correct tribe. Don’t draw a Blackfoot woman as a Hopi woman or an Inuk man as a Wampanoag man. Natives don’t “all look the same.”

Disney Princesses with Service Dogs

Here’s a project we did a while ago…raising awareness for service dogs, and the lack of disability rep in pop culture. Beginning by showing the possible invisible disabilities Disney princesses could have!

Our art has been shared a lot of times without credit, so please help our original post be shared (instead of copied ones). Please message us if you see uncredited copies floating around.

An autistic Tiana with her service pup! Her dog isn’t tasking here, but can provide harm interruption for damaging stims, grounding during sensory overload, and more.

Pocahontas/Matoaka with a diabetic alert dog! He can sniff drops or spikes in blood sugar and retrieve medication.

(This was based off of dozens of suggestions from native SD handlers who wished to raise awareness for the genetic probability of diabetes in their race.)

Cinderella with Fibromyalgia. Her sweet lab is helping take her shoes off, to prevent a bad flare after dancing!

(And yes, some people with fibro can enjoy nights of dancing.)

Rapunzel with PTSD and Dissociative Identity Disorder (definitely plausible with her trauma). Her big pup is doing a dissociation alert and then providing tactile stimulation for grounding.

Belle with Generalized Anxiety Disorder! Her pup is doing a blocking task, and can alert her to anyone approaching from behind.

Sleeping Beauty with Narcolepsy (and Cataplexy)! Her poodle, Spindle, helped her fall gently to avoid head injury and can wake her through licking, also helping her brace to stand.

Here’s Snow White with a (kinda large whoops) allergy alert dog. She’s deathly allergic to apples! Here, he’s tasking and checking her food for allergens.

(At the request of brachycephalic service dog handlers, we wanted to demonstrate that they can do scent work reliably too.)

Okay…he’s not a princess but we also have Captain Hook with anxiety and PTSD (this was a special request featuring a real service dog).

Prints of these aren’t for sale (copyright issues), but if you’d like the full quality files to print at home, email us at [email protected]. We’d love if you supported our art by purchasing an original dog painting print here as thanks!

Enjoy!! <3

i’ve seen people say that ariel can’t be played by halle cuz it’s a danish tale and we should get mad at a white woman playing mulan, pocahontas, or tiana.

mulan literally had to go save china; her story is about her being chinese

pocahontas had her land invaded by colonizers and they literally call her and her tribe s*vages; her story is about her being native american

tiana is a black woman living in the 20s in the south surrounded by black culture (the food, the music, etc); her story is about her being black.

ariel’s story isn’t about her being danish. they don’t talk about her being danish, there’s no danish culture integrated into the plot, nothing; it’s just a danish tale.

y’all just don’t want a black woman with locs playing ariel. like stop being pussies and say that with your chest.

POCAHONTAS: Character Design, Inconsistencies and her visual presence throughout the Disney empire

I am doing a series of comparisons of the princesses throughout their time in the Disney empire (Original Film, Merchandise, Promotional Material and Marketing, Redesigns) so we could maybe get a better understanding of how they appear in Wreck It Ralph 2. I’m going to start with Pocahontas because I thought… why not? I don’t really know. We’ll see if anyone sees my posts lol.

Note: These are only my opinions. I’m always open to a discussion :)

Pictures of Pocahontas throughout her original film (source: Disney Wiki)

One thing I noticed is throughout her film her skin tends to change. Some of this makes sense as the light is different in some scenes but then some of it doesn’t. So it’s hard to grasp what her actual skin tone is. We can only really get an idea of how it is especially since she’s a flat 2D character. In some scenes she has more of an orange tone and in others its a bit more red. It is rather bright and doesn’t seem to be as dark as many other people say. Not making white washing complaints invalid but I think there is room for discussion and debate. Most comparisons use her iconic in the mist pose which may be misleading but watch the film and maybe let me know if I’m wrong or being misleading myself.

Pictures of Pocahontas on her promotional material for her film (source: Disney Wiki)

Here she consistently has an orange/brown tone to her skin (orange more for me). She also here is brighter than I see people make her out to be or say she is.

Pictures of Pocahontas’ redesign (source: Disney Wiki)

I don’t hate her redesign though I definitely think less may be more. The left and right I feel capture an accurate skin tone and reflection of her movie counterpart but I would consider the right going a bit far in lightening her skin (not to mention she has more of a pink/red tone to her skin. Something you tend to see more with caucasians). It seems to me that the team at Disney who worked on these have decided Pocahontas’ skin tone from her movie is more of her mid tone and not her highlight which makes sense to me. (For anyone who doesn’t know your mid tone is almost the base color of your skin and highlights are either the lighter or the lightest parts of your skin. highlights can get more visible the darker the base of your skin is. I think we all know what the shadows are)

Pocahontas in merchandise [besides a redesign] (source: Disney Wiki)

Pocahontas’ merchandise besides some dolls and her DVD cover (some I definitely can see too much lightening) for me are lighter but don’t stray far from her skin tone. They seem to stay true to the original but they definitely are far from her Iconic pose in the mist (for me she really appears to be in the shadow there). On a different note the baby doll of her looks way more like her voice actress (Is that just me?)

Pocahontas in printed media (source: Disney Wiki)

Pocahontas for me is even lighter in the left and right but still feels true to the character and doesn’t really make her look more caucasian.

Irene Bedard (source: ? google images with the tools set to large images)

Irene may not seem that important in the design of Pocahontas but I see clear resemblance and I think it will play a bigger role in my post later. Like right now later LOL

Pocahontas in Wreck It Ralph 2 (source: youtube (Walt Disney Animation Studios,Instagram (Walt Disney Animation Studios), Artstation (Tyler Bolyard))

Personally I love this design. One I think they might have taken inspiration from Irene Bedard herself though she’s always resembled Pocahontas. I’ve seen that a lot of people do love this design and a good chunk of people don’t. I think one thing to keep in mind or at least I thought of is that all the princesses are heavily inspired by Vanellopes appearance

Vanellope Von Schweetz (source: Disney Wiki)

A little girl with huge bug eyes and a small button nose. They also seem to be bringing in elements from the princesses’ original films but they all conform to the style in which Vanellope was designed. I think in Pocahontas’ case her big eyes are throwing off her likeness for some people because they were so small and far more realistic compared to lets say Ariel, Belle and Jasmine. But personally I don’t think she lost her other distinctive features. I personally can still see her angular and sharp face shape, her round plump lips and her straight nose. To me she has the essence of Pocahontas without being a replica. This also goes for Snow White, Cinderella, Merida (without smiling), Tiana and Rapunzel. I feel when it comes to the lightening accusations the lighting of the scene might come into play. In the scene where they’re all questioning Vanellope theres light coming from above hitting a lot of the princess on the tops of their heads making them appear paler. Cause when I compare the top left and middle to the bottom right there’s a substantial difference in Pocahontas’ overall skin color (not to mention its more of a red tone). But also if she is lightened which can definitely be argued this didn’t come out of nowhere. Almost every appearance of Pocahontas could arguably be lighter than her movie counterpart. This could all be due to her being one shade since she’s a 2D character though. I definitely disagree though that she looks like a white woman with a tan. Especially compared to a lot of the white princesses.

Rapunzel, Cinderella, Pocahontas and Aurora (source: Youtube (Walt Disney Animation Studios), Artstation (Tyler Bolyard))

I talked to my mom and she said that Pocahontas looked more Latina than white or native american and agreed she didn’t really see the likeness. My sister did and I did though. But hey that’s our observations. If you come across this and you disagree let me know with what and why and if you agree you can do the same :) Any opinion from anyone has validity in my eyes.

Have a great day!!!
