Hawaii Gov. Josh Green on Friday said he wants 3,000 condos and homes that are normally rented to Maui tourists converted to long-term housing for displaced wildfire survivors who are now living in hotels. Green said he's prepared to use the "hammer" of post-fire emergency orders to make sure owners of short-term vacation rentals extend them to long-term units if enough spaces aren't converted voluntarily by mid-January. The governor said that as of Thursday, there were 6,297 residents still living in hotels more than four months after the Aug. 8 wildfire wiped out historic Lahaina. The vast majority don't have anywhere else to go given the extreme housing shortage on Maui.
As a mainlander who went to the Big Island once when my parents took me in high school, well before Airbnb existed, and saw people and communities displaced by tourist rentals even then...truly, FUCK these people and companies. This is active colonization. These properties should be seized and turned over to the Native people of Hawaii permanently.
Why Hawaii needs a break from tourism — perspective from local resident palanichang on tiktok
I'm sorry, but that should be illegal. No visitors or businesses should be allowed to take from residents. Period.
Where you can donate to help Maui, Hawaii
this article has places listed that you can donate to, but i’ll also put direct links to some of these places in this post:
my family is based in Oahu, but i consider all the islands my home even though i physically haven’t stepped foot on them before. seeing all the homes and history and memories being lost in this hurts.
if you are unable to donate, don’t feel guilty—doing things like spreading the word and making people aware of the situation helps as well. thank you for whatever you can do! mahalo
UPDATE: removed Maui Mutual Aid Fund for now because upon further research using the charity checking sites provided by this gov site, it doesn’t appear in results unlike the others listed. so i advise caution for now if you decide to donate there! they may still be legitimate, but i want to exercise caution.
Hope It’s all right to add a few more to the list.
University of Hawaii Foundation : Provides help to students, staff, and faculty the UHMC campus (especially when the Fall semester is starting in two weeks)
‘Āina Momona : (goes towards the Hawaii Community Foundation Maui County Strong Fund)
Additional Lists (there is some overlapping to those already listed): Mana Maoli Hawaii News Now
Some local Hawai’i artists are also donating 100% of their sales this week to Maui relief. (These are only the ones I know of offhand) Geoffrey Siu (creator of Gentlemons/Pokema’ams and other original art) JimmyxSparrow (Wide variety of art, does fusions of Pokemon and Hawaiian culture) Laulima (Native Hawaiian flora and fauna pins and so on)
Any help is definitely welcomed because many locals there are displaced and are now homeless. With cell service down back on Tuesday and were last told to stay in place, many had to quickly evacuate with just their clothes on their back and nothing else.
thank you so much for the additions!!! you did my work for me this evening.
here is also the twitter account of the Office of the Governor of Hawaii. there are updates and info being posted there. it’s where i found the article on checking legitimacy of fundraisers/charities.
Wanted to highlight two Pacific Islander properties coming up for PI part of AAPI Heritage Month!
The first is ‘Hailey’s On It!”, a new Disney Channel show starring the voice of Moana, Auli’i Cravalho.
The second is middle grade book ‘Lei and the Fire Goddess’ by own voices author Malia Maunkea.
Both come out soon and you should absolutely support them!
““The Great Pacific Garbage Patch can now be cleaned,” announced Dutch entrepreneur Boyan Slat, the wonderkid inventor who’s spent a decade inventing systems for waterborne litter collection.
Recent tests on his Ocean Cleanup rig called System 002, invented to tackle the 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic pollution, were a success, leading Slat to predict that most of the oceanic garbage patches could be removed by 2040.
Intersections of ocean currents have created the massive floating islands of plastic trash—five slow-moving whirlpools that pull litter from thousands of miles away into a single radius.
The largest one sits between California and Hawaii, and 27-year-old Slat has been designing and testing his systems out there, launching from San Francisco since 2013.
GNN has reported on his original design for the floating device, but his engineering team improved upon it. System 002, nicknamed “Jenny,” successfully netted 9,000 kilograms, or around 20,000 pounds in its first trial.
It’s carbon-neutral, able to capture microplastics as small as 1 millimeter in diameter, and was designed to pose absolutely no threat to wildlife thanks to its wide capture area, slow motion, alerts, and camera monitors that allow operators to spy any overly-curious marine life…
Slat estimates ten Jennies could clean half the garbage patch in five years, and if 10 Jennies were deployed to the five major ocean gyres, then 90% of all floating plastic could be removed by 2040.” -via Good News Network, 10/19/21

Every US State ranked by how practical its shape would be as a charcuterie board
The best is Colorado because obviously. it's a square
The worst is Hawaii because it's mostly tiny islands that, even when scaled up, can't fit even a single piece of cheese. even the big island would still be small

What’s up just a reminder that the Hula Girl stereotype can go to hell and is in part responsible for Hawai’i being the tourist destination and getting invaded by rich white people, and for Hawaiian culture being disrespected and appropriated
Here’s a few sources on the topic:
How America’s Obsession With Hula Girls Almost Wrecked Hawai’i (the site is weird but the research is legitimate, gives a good overview of the issue and references a lot of sources that are harder to get your hands on read: books)
“Pop” Goes Hawai’i: The Twentieth Century Origins of Tourism in Hawai’i and the Impact of U.S. Pop Culture on Women in the Islands of Aloha (this one is very long but a really good read)
Misperceptions of the “Hula Girl” (this one is a personal essay but it’s an entry in the University of Hawai’i’s academic newspaper)
Cool cool so its Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month so I’m gonna uh. reblog this
Also if you don’t have the time and/or energy to read through these articles lemme give you the basic breakdown (I’ll try to keep this short, but I’ll put it under the cut because it’ll probably still take up space)
Hey! I’m in the process of making a tumblr version but just so y’all know I made a blog post database-style compiling details about the U.S. Navy water crisis in Hawai’i. You can find it here
The U.S. Navy built massive underground tanks in WW2 and neglected them for decades and now they’re rotting and contaminating the source of drinking water of over 400,000 people with petrochemicals.
I added information with various sources, video links, organization links, solid news sources to keep updated, local resident accounts, military family accounts, and whatever other valuable details I could find.
SHUT DOWN RED HILL
I saw this on Tiktok and thought it needed to be passed on. Pololū Valley is sacred land currently at risk of being developed into yet another "scenic tourist attraction" for profit. Activists like @/melemaikalanimakalapua on Tiktok are fighting to have this petition seen by as many people as possible in order to prevent the senseless destruction of this land.
Note that the petition says not to donate to change.org--donations to change.org do NOT protect Pololū Valley.
I hope that by spreading this to tumblr, I can help it reach more people. Please sign this and reblog it if you can!
not to get political but im begging you guys to stop coming to hawaii. in maui theyre asking to put a ‘pause’ on flights bc we literally do not have enough room or staff to service you. the roads are so full that its causing a major backup when ppl need to get to work.
on top of this, i heard that by September? theyre expecting to get rid of the mask rule (if 70% of ppl are vaccinated/all goes well) but ill be honest w/ you, i know many locals arent getting the vaccine and i know plenty of tourist arent gonna take the necessary precautions.
homeless hawaiians aren’t even allowed to sit or lay on sidewalks to keep up the “paradise” image for tourists
- “Hawai‘i has the highest rate of homelessness per capita among the 50 states” (another source)
- do you remember when zuckerburg bought hawaiian land in kauai? then filed lawsuits agasint families that lived their? that land BELONGS to the natives and its extremly harmful to the community.
- at this very moment, hawaii is one of the most EXPENSIVE places to live on top of not having a liveable minimum wage ($10.10) this is why many children still live w/ their parents (+ having no space) in order to SURVIVE here, youd have to work full time for at least $15.50 (more links)
- in this article it states that “The Living Wage Calculator from the MIT says that one adult in Honolulu needs to make $16.59 per hour for a living wage. If that is a couple with 2 children, each adult needs to make $17.70 per hour.”
- everything is more EXPENSIVE; food, household appliances, clothing, etc bc everything is shipped there.
- “the median price for a single family home in Hawaii was $885K. Condos are selling at a median of $454K.”
- “Average rent in Hawaii (Oahu) for a studio will vary based on location but expect to pay around $1,670 with Waikiki studios going from $1,400 to about $1,700. Average rent for one bedroom apartments in Hawaii (Honolulu, Oahu) is $1,743”
PLEASE stop vacationing in / moving to the occupied Kingdom of Hawaiʻi. You are actively participating in violent settler colonialism when you do, even if you aren’t white. Never in my whole life have I seen our airport THIS packed!!! Our islands cannot support this many people – especially during our dry season and in the middle of a PANDEMIC!
Tourism makes it impossible to keep up with the rising cost of living. It brings in revenue and with that, becomes the fake state’s priority. Tourism pushes native Hawaiians from their land and homes, puts locals at risk for covid19, directly harms the delicate environment and native species here, houseless folk (many whom are native Hawaiian) are being illegally swept to make room for tourists at beaches, and locals are being restricted and fined for using water on east Maui, all while hotels can use up all the resources no problem and our government approves a million dollar home construction for new part-time residents (when locals who have been here for generations are being thrown into poverty, barely staying afloat, losing businesses and even their homes). “Hawai’i has become the Blood Diamond of the Pacific. We are mined for our splendor, and our residents live the every day, complex consequences.”
It’s absolutely VILE what is happening here. I hope yall know that Hawaiʻi was overthrown and occupied by the US military, and isn’t even legally a state! Hawaiʻi is not your vacation spot, so you better tell your family and friends to stay at home.
Modern day colonization is happening right now in Hawai’i
Information comes from @kuekanaka .
The Eric A. Knudsen Trust is planning to develop 110 acres on the Kōloa Po‘ipū land. There have been bits of canoe and bones found in a neighboring site.
This Trust has already been cited and fined for over 10,000 in this area and they also have admitted to having workers come in on the weekends and destroy significant cultural sites.
The Knudsen Trust is perpetuating neocolonization.
This land is also home to several endangered species, including the Kaua’i Blind Cave Wolf-Spider and the Kolana.
This land will be turned into a gated community.
Here is the link to a petition. Reblog and sign that, because people’s lives depend on it.
Today is a good day to remind people that Queen Liliuokalani was deposed by the US Government because of sheer greed, racism, and misogyny.
The Hawaiian Islands were made a territory and then a state because of greed. Because of coffee and pineapples and sugar cane. Because the US gov’t did not want to be beholden to a Queen of Hawaii, or any Hawaiian leader for that matter. And neither did the people wanting to sell those products so they pressured the US gov’t (like they continue to do).
The Hawaiian islands are seeking to become a true sovereign nation with political recognition of their sovereignty. Please consider purchasing goods from Native Hawaiians rather than the haole, outsider corporations that are selling the same thing and undercutting. Also consider supporting the various Native Hawaiian organizations (NHOA) found here and here.
Mahalo.

Happy Pacific American Heritage Month! Reblogging this again with a bit of extra information.
I went to Hawaii and had a very political tour guide. Basically, America could undo what we did to Hawaii and leave them alone and Hawaii would be 100% self sufficient without any need for trade, but we blocked up waterfalls and shit to make them rely on US government. Hawaii could be it’s own place and be fine. (I’m very glad we had the tour guid that we did)
