Exactly what I thought it would be.

Do Not call me a liar on my own post again!

It is a real poem! And it is magnificent.

god im so sorry to do this i know its annoying but mongooses are not mustelids. they are herpestids and actually not closely related to mustelids at all despite their similar appearance

I'm loving Dungeon Meshi's mix of quasi-probable magical biological realism and "It's magic fuck you."

Red dragons swallow their prey whole and use the undigestible remains as fuel for their fire breath, which is lit by creating a spark with their tongue. Living armors are colonies of mollusks who expand and contract to mimic muscle movement. Actually "man-eating" plants is a misnomer, they catch small animals with a filament that retracts when touched and they use their decomposing prey as compost.

These mushrooms can turn you into a gnome. It's magic fuck you.

While Ryoko Kui doesn't explain how the mushroom magic works, I love that she does still explain the ecological niche of those mushrooms. When a creature gets covered in spores and is transformed magically, it gets cast out by others of its kind and driven away. Then, when it dies, the spores sprout into a new mushroom circle. This doesn't explain the magic, but it does explain why mushrooms with that magic effect would have evolutionary success.

I love that even when the mechanism for something is just "it's magic", she still puts so much thought into the world around the magic and how it fits into the broader picture. Absolutely one of the reasons her worldbuilding is so generally stellar.

What’s up just a reminder that the Hula Girl stereotype can go to hell and is in part responsible for Hawai’i being the tourist destination and getting invaded by rich white people, and for Hawaiian culture being disrespected and appropriated

Here’s a few sources on the topic:

How America’s Obsession With Hula Girls Almost Wrecked Hawai’i (the site is weird but the research is legitimate, gives a good overview of the issue and references a lot of sources that are harder to get your hands on read: books)

Misperceptions of the “Hula Girl” (this one is a personal essay but it’s an entry in the University of Hawai’i’s academic newspaper)

Cool cool so its Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month so I’m gonna uh. reblog this

Also if you don’t have the time and/or energy to read through these articles lemme give you the basic breakdown (I’ll try to keep this short, but I’ll put it under the cut because it’ll probably still take up space)

Broke: Barbie's many different careers are a way to sell dolls and accessories to little kids.

Woke: Barbie had every single one of those careers and is an immortal timeless being.

Bespoke: Barbie's different careers are different versions of Barbie from across the multiverse who occasionally swap place with each other or combine into one Barbie.

SO THERE’S SOMETHING Y’ALL SHOULD KNOW ABOUT...

Attack of the clones

I have often used Barbie to explain Greek mythology, and people laugh until I explain it, and then they get really serious and thoughtful.

I say, “The Greeks ascribed aspects to gods. Apollo had many aspects, but all were Apollo. He’s like Barbie that way. She’s an astronaut, a veterinarian, and a rollerskater, but no matter which of those things she is in the moment, she is always still Barbie. She is Barbie in her aspect as.”

Then people get not only the idea of “aspects” of godhood, but also, well, the changeable yet eternal nature of Barbie.

homophobes are not allowed to use computers because the inventor of the computer was gay

People think this is just a joke but Alan Turing was the inventor of the computer and his sexuality was illegal in his time (which was not even 100 years ago) and he was arrested. They put him on drugs that destroyed his genius brain and committed suicide a year after being covicted. He was gay and a war hero as well. He helped to break enigma which was a German code that they put all their messages through. He shorted WWII by two years and saved so many lives in the process.

Friendly reminder that if not for Alan Turing you wouldn’t be reading this post and we might be ruled by the nazis

Charities/organisations to avoid:

PETA: They’d rather spend their money on publicity campaigns than on the animals in their care. PETA killed 73.8% of the animals in their care in 2015 (x)

FCKH8: Is a for-profit company that exploits oppressed groups for money. They’re also wildly uninformed, and spread misogyny, cissexism and bi/panphobia, as well as stealing their posts/designs (x)

Autism Speaks: They spend most of their money on researching a way to eliminate autism, heighten the stigma against autism and don’t have a single autistic person on their board (x)

Please support other, better charities, and feel free to add any others you can think of to this.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure: CEO makes insane amounts of money, they deny a lot of requests for wigs/help with treatment/etc., and have attempted to sue other charities that use the color pink as part of their anti-breast cancer campaign. ( x x x )

The Salvation Army: They promote the hatred of LGBT+ people, work with fundamentalist Christian groups to support conservative politics and rip off and exploit workers. ( x x x )

Wounded Warrior: They take money that should be spent on veterans and blow it on huge opulent parties for the company bigwigs. 26 million in 2014 alone wasted! ( x x x )

^ Important reminder to NOT waste any money donating to these groups

A good way to know if a nonprofit you’re donating to is allocating their money in the right way is to check out their Charity Navigator rating: http://www.charitynavigator.org

Signal boosting, the bell ringers are out in force, and this info is too important.

Charity season is coming up in not even two months, so I feel like this is important to share now before it’s too late.

Happy Pacific American Heritage Month! Reblogging this again with a bit of extra information.

I went to Hawaii and had a very political tour guide. Basically, America could undo what we did to Hawaii and leave them alone and Hawaii would be 100% self sufficient without any need for trade, but we blocked up waterfalls and shit to make them rely on US government. Hawaii could be it’s own place and be fine. (I’m very glad we had the tour guid that we did)
