A post of a rather nerdy look in something I find interesting in 101 Dalmatian Street

Something I think the show should do more is showing Dolly more positive as a pup care caretaker, and make Dylan a little more flawed in it.

I don’t mean make him suddenly incompetent, but more show one thing that I think Dolly excels at a lot better than Dylan does; Dolly with the pups individually.

Imma use these 2 scenes from Fetch, when Dylan and Dolly are trying to get all the Fetches back. Because think they perfectly show what I’m trying to say, especially because in the episode they’re played right next to each other to better show the contrast.

Dolly more coaxes Dawkins into giving Fetch up. She’s tells him other options of other dogs that can love him back, and tells him “just like you deserve”. And when she realizes quick that may not happen very soon, she compromises by giving him back his Princess Positron doll. And she only leaves when she’s sure that’s he’s gonna be ok without Fetch around.

To put it bluntly, Dolly isn’t very responsible. She’s not good at realizing pups need an occasional bath, and how sometimes some pups need extra vitamins in their kibble. BUT, she’s very empathetic to them emotionally. The way she makes sure to tell Dawkins he deserves canine interaction, and to be loved back. How she looks at him happily when he’s gonna be fine with Princess Positron. Heck, even in the middle of the episode when she buys everyone a Fetch. At the beginning, all the pups were pretty fine with just sharing the one Fetch, they only were bummed out when Dylan took it away. When she realized they could order more, she could’ve easily gotten just one for them all, but she made sure every single pup got a Fetch of their own (yes this decision did contribute to the problem but that’s beside the point). Dolly may act carefree, but she really really cares that her siblings are happy and emotionally content at the end of the day.

By contrast, when we see Dylan and Delgado, Dylan’s practically trying to force it away from Delgado. We don’t get any dialogue, but considering how blunt Dylan can be it’s not that hard to imagine he went something along the lines of “Delgado, Fetch. Paw it over!”, and Delgado wasn’t gonna give it up that quick. They end up snarling and in a head bump fight, and Delgado basically butting Dylan away from his Fetch. And in that end, they both end up annoyed and not getting what they wanted.

Now, I’m not saying Dylan doesn’t care about his siblings. If he didn’t, he wouldn’t be so obsessed with keeping them clean and fed and taking most of the responsibility of the house. He’s very responsible, and makes sure everybody stays together.

But at the same time, he kind of sees them as just that; all-together. Like “alright. 97 pups, let’s see how we can do these chores as efficient as possible with their cooperation”. But he kinda fails to realize that, despite 81 of them being basically interchangeable, these are 97 individual puppies with 97 individual wants, dreams, and emotional needs. And that sometimes (a lot of the times), they aren’t going to cooperate or all think the same and want the same things (again, ignoring that 81 of them are interchangeable).

That’s not a knock on Dylan, it’s just again, it’s 97 pups. And with all the chores he does, he just can’t give them all that individual attention they need.

But I think Dolly can. We’ve already seen that she’s good at keeping them entertained, chances are she knows better at bringing a certain sad pup down in a way only they can be cheered up. And she’s pretty observant of her siblings. How much Deepak does keeping things calm. How she knows a lot of her sib’s habits, like how Dorothy always comes to breakfast last. Dylan keeps the pups safe as a group, but Dolly keeps the pups safe as individuals.

I don’t know, maybe it’s me being a nerd, but that one scene just had me thinking, and I think this could’ve been a really good angle/different “top dogs” dynamic to have. I kinda wish we get to see more of it

(It may also be me low-key wanting more people to see that Dolly does have some good qualities in puppy care and Dylan isn’t basically a complete saint at it)

Plots I’d love to see in Season 2 of Dalmatian Street:

An episode where…

  • … the family harbors and befriends an escaped zoo animal
  • …an extended family is introduced (i.e. Doug and/or Delilah’s siblings, parents or nieces/nephews)
  • …a courtroom drama parody ensues and Dolly has to prove she didn’t do whatever they accuse her of (bonus points if Diesel gets to be her lawyer)
  • …Dante decides he should live his life to the fullest if he really believes the end of the world is coming (he becomes a daredevil)
  • …Triple D and the Dimitris have a classic “Boys VS Girls” competition
  • …the family goes camping and befriends a wolf
  • …the family’s backstory is revealed (how Delilah and Doug met, how their family kept growing, etc.)
  • …Dylan and Dolly somehow end up on the other side of the country (or a different one altogether!) and have to embark (no pun intended) on an Adventure™ to make their way back home
