Not as smart as I claim
Avatar

Hello, good evening

My name is Moth (any pronouns) and I’ve created this page for my ramblings about some of the books and other entertainment I consume and have opinions on but I feel like I sound like I’m trying to sound smarter then I am when I talk about it irl lol, hence this.

Probably will turn into a primarily book centric page so for reference some of my favourite books that I’ll probably rant about are Frankenstein, Carmilla, If we were villains, etc. all that good stuff, if that’s something your into, stick around, if not, lame but fair lol

Have a nice night!

Very unpopular opinions but, I love the book ‘A Little Life’ and I hate hate HATE how romanticized Jude and Willems relationship is. I don’t understand why I always see people talking about them, especially when Harold and Jude’s relationship is right there and is (imo) so much more heartbreaking but also so sweet, I love them so much and if I hear one more person talking about how Willem was perfect for Jude, I’ll loose it.

I was recently going through The Secret History again to look for the different books mentioned within it and there was one specifically that made me pause. On page 83 Henry is trying to translate Paradise Lost into Latin and when Richard asks why he responded with “I am interested to see what I wind up with”.

There was two reasons this struck me, one being how paradise lost is about whether or not humans really have free will to make their own choices or if they are fated. (“Such a thing as the fatal flaw”)

The second and honestly more interesting reason this struck me was because it reminded me of one of my other favourite books, Frankenstein. Paradise Lost is read by Frankensteins creation in the book and is his favourite novel (Henry winter also claims “Milton to my way of thinking is our greatest English poet, greater than Shakespeare,”). And all of a sudden things started to fall into place for me, all the similarities between them, from how large they both were to how they both ended at their own hand. Frankenstein’s creation and Henry Winter. So different and yet the same. Both monsters of their own making. I just think it’s interesting.

We all love Henry’ reaction to the moon landing, it’s a classic, we all love it, but I just realized it’s basically this:

Richard: yah, man has made it to the moon.

Henry, putting down his fork:…..Nu-uh.

Bunny:….fyM NU-UH??

Anyways I think this was probably the real last straw for Henry, realizing Bunny was aware of something he wasn’t.

I don’t consider myself a “romantic” by any means and I tend to stay away from primarily romance books (just personal preference) however, When I was reading Carmilla and I read:

“I am sure Carmilla, you have been in love.”

“I have been in love with no one, and never shall,” she whispered, “unless it should be with you.”

I swooned, like oh my god that is just- how was Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu gonna write that and call it a cautionary tale???? It’s just so beautifully sweet and I love it so much.

Edit: I just realized I think the reason I love it so much is because I can remember being a young girl and confidently announcing I would never marry a boy and all the adults in my life laughing and shaking there heads, telling me I’d understand it when I got older. Here Camilla is saying something similar, she will never love nor marry a man. Something about it is just so sweetly innocent and it’s nice to know young girls hundreds of years ago may have said the same things we do today.
