The Mofftiss Talk in Cambridge!
Gonna list all the important things I can remember:
- If they were to bring Irene Adler back properly, they would need the storyline to be something incredible and worthy of her.
- They’re aware that they, as people, can do so much more to improve representation, but they can’t just throw it all in randomly!
- They believe it’s not true that all they do is have men talk down to women and murder women in Sherlock - case in point is Mrs Hudson. Moffat said “Mrs Hudson is alive and well… Mycroft tried to talk down to her and he got a big telling off!” Also Irene, for obvious reasons.
- A follow up to that is they said if you don’t like being talked down to and don’t like murder, then don’t watch Sherlock. Because it’s about a patronising man that solves murders. Everyone applauded that.
- Mark loves The Red-Headed League and has always wanted to modernise the story. It’s one of his favourites. Moffat isn’t sure why.
- Someone in the audience asked them if they knew that Sherlock and John’s nicknames on Chinese web forums were “Curly woo” and “Peanut” and what would Mycroft’s be?
- Mark said “I don’t know Chinese.”
- The girl replied with “well it’s a good thing that ‘peanut’ is an English word” and the entire room DIED.
- Eventually Mark settled on Mycroft being nicknamed “Slush Puppy” for those forums.
- Mark didn’t write Mycroft for himself to play. He had some failed audition (he was softly spoken and hard to hear, so I didn’t quite catch the beginning of that story), but Steve Thompson told him that the voice he used for that part would be great for Mycroft. So here we are.
- In terms of future episodes, they would love to do a series 5, but scheduling for it is super hard because of how busy Benedict and Martin are, but it’s not off the table, it seems!
- Mark’s favourite episode to write with Steven was The Final Problem.
- When asked why they didn’t bring back Irene Adler as a love interest for Sherlock, they gently reminded the girl in the audience that Sherlock was never a love story and never will be, but Sherlock texting a woman is a Big Deal anyway.
- They told us it was Tom Baker’s birthday today.
- I didn’t get to ask my question in front of everyone, but when I met Mark afterwards I asked him then. Read about that here.
- Mark Gatiss is softly spoken and Steven Moffat is a loveable grandad and you can’t tell me otherwise
