President Abraham Lincoln's dog, Fido. Fido lived with the Lincoln's in Springfield, but was given away shortly after Lincoln's election because he was observed to not like the sound of cannons that were shot to mark Lincoln's inauguration. Fido was brought to the White House to greet mourners following Lincoln's assassination, and was unfortunately killed himself by a drunk man.

In 1858, Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas were engaged in a series of debates for the Illinois senate seat. Though Lincoln lost the debate and the election, the fact that he was able to even compete with Douglas, a renown debater, shot him to national fame.

On this day in 1864, Abraham Lincoln was elected to his second term in office, despite unpopularity due to the Civil War.
