The Dazzling Beauty of Elizabeth Taylor in Iran

In 1976, actress Elizabeth Taylor and then-aspiring photographer Firooz Zahedi journeyed across the world to Tehran. They dined with royalty, toured ancient sites, shopped in the Grand Bazaar, and perhaps most importantly, took a series of photographs that offer beautiful glimpses of Iran before the revolution and provide an intimate portrait of a 20th-century film icon. Though never intended for public view, Andy Warhol published the photos in Interview magazine shortly after Zahedi and Taylor returned from Iran, and in 2012 they were exhibited at LACMA. Zahedi and Taylor remained close friends and he continued to photograph her throughout the rest of her life. In this episode of Expert Voices, Firooz Zahedi shares the stories behind the captivating images of Elizabeth Taylor in Iran and describes how this remarkable experience influenced his now decades-long career as a celebrated photographer. Sotheby’s will offer one of these magnificent photographs, Elizabeth Taylor Dressed as an Odalisque II, in our 20th Century Art / Middle East sale. (30 April | London)

Portrait of Mohamed Darouich al Allousi (1924)

Iraqi Painter ABDULQADIR AL RASSAM

As far as my research took me, there was no Islamic scholar established enough to be painted during that period with the name “Mohammed”. Thus, I most probably believe this painting is in reference to Mahmoud (not Mohamed) Shukri Darouich al Allousi محمود شكري درويش الألوسي, who was an Iraqi Scholar of Islam and the Imam and Khatib of Abu Hanifa Mosque in Al Aadhamya, Baghdad for more than 40 years. Many famous Iraqi and Arab scholars and poets were also taught under his wings; with figures like Iraqi poet Maarouf Al Russafi and Iraqi-Lebanese Christian priest and linguist Anastas Al-Karmali being the most known. Mahmoud acquired his knowledge from his father, The Great al Allousi, who was also an Islamic scholar, poet, writer, and mufasir of the Quran (Ruh al Ma'ani روح المعاني). The most probable figure in this painting, Mahmoud Darouich al Allousi, passed away on the same year of the completion of that painting, and he can be seen here in this photograph resembling the figure in the painting.
The influence of 19th century romanticism is seen heavily here to the extent that one might at first think it is painted by an artist from that region. The lively nature of the colours, the confident brush strokes, the masterful shadowing, and the depiction of figures in a relatively idealized manner are all characteristics of such movement and highlight the influence European art has had on his artistic upbringing.

What does it mean to die young and to be a star? What does it mean to be Druze, and a princess, at that? To belong to a faith that few really understand, and be a woman regarded as a reincarnation? Why is [Asmahan] still capable of touching people so deeply that she changes their lives? ‘It’s chemistry, not something we can rationally talk about’, says Yasmine Hamdan:

My heart stirs when I hear her voice. She has an incredible voice, a very melancholic one, too, that carries elegance – something that I care for in the Arab world. She was a rebellious and strong woman, [but] she was also very fragile, and you can hear that in her voice and see it in her eyes.

Liraz - Nozi Nozi (Official Video)

The major reference of the "Nozi Nozi" video are late 70s TV video clips of female singers from the Middle East - with mesmerizing landscapes and picturesque sites as visual background for an alluring singer. The lyrics refer to a role model of female in Iranian society and the idea of noz - an Iranian archetype of a sweetly-smiling wife. The video directed by Nadav Direktor is a visual remix of oldschool TV footage, Liraz's memmories of Iran, surreal symbols of feminism and orientalism.

Print on paper. “The Holy Mahmal

Middle East; 20th century The annual pilgrimage to the Kaaba in Mecca, the hajj, is made in the last month of the Islamic lunar calendar, Dhu al-Hijja. All Muslims should make the pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime, but Islamic law provides for a number of exceptions for people who are unable to make the journey for some reason or other.

This print shows the annual pilgrimage caravan from Egypt to Mecca. The Egyptian governor had a beautifully decorated symbolic litter, called a mahmal, transported on camelback. The last Egyptian mahmal embarked on the journey from Cairo to Mecca and back in 1926.
