Gustave Moreau has long been my favorite painter and I have been fortunate enough to visit the Gustave Moreau Museum in Paris several times. I took some photos during our last visit in 2008, but hadn’t shared them anywhere.
This is a detail from Le Retour des Argonautes, an unfinished oil on canvas from 1897. I love the way Moreau painted men. This argonaut looks as though he feels that his homecoming is just a dream, but it’s a beautiful dream nonetheless.

Self-Portrait, Gustave Moreau
Gustave Moreau - born April 6, 1826 - d. April 18, 1898
The art of Gustave Moreau—born on this day in 1826—stands apart from that of his realist and impressionist contemporaries in nineteenth-century France, particularly in the mystical and enigmatic quality of his paintings of biblical and mythological subjects. He is considered an important precursor to the symbolist and surrealist movements, and his students included Henri Matisse and Georges Rouault.
