Mastodon Instances For 18+ Artists

These sites either allow or mainly focus on NSFW artwork, and have pros and cons to them. I'm recommending them bc god sites like Bluesky and Tumblr are not lenient with horny kink content.

These instances are the ones I have experience being on, and would personally recommend. You can have an account on all of them, since putting your eggs all in one basket is not advised. It's up to you and what you want to draw + be comfortable with!

AETHY

Pros: Freedom of Fiction | LSC Allowed | NSFW Friendly | CW are Required for Kink + Adult Content Federates with (not limited to): Baraag, Misskey etc

Cons: Is not federated with a bunch of instances like Masto.art and such, due to the LSC allowance. May post a lot of uncensored nudity (nonsexual) but you can mute it if uncomfortable, Final Fantasy G-Posers may 'forget' to use CWs.

BARAAG

Pros: LSC Allowed | NSFW Friendly | Freedom of Fiction Federates with a lot of nsfw instances: Aethy and Misskey etc

Cons: A LOT of uncensored LSC | Content Warnings are Optional | Reports of Hatespeech not getting moderated | 3D LSC content | Only opens up artist applications once every so often (and you have to be an artist with examples of your art)

DENDEN

Pros: NSFW Friendly | Pokefur + Furry Focused (Human Allowed) | CW Required for Adult Content Federates with Aethy + Baraag + Misskey etc

Cons: No LSC Allowed | May be rather small but cozy

There are probably more but I've yet to check them out! If you're in Japan you can use sites like Misskey (JP only). Please don't only move to Bluesky, they're heavy handed with censorship and anti kink.

i wrote this post almost 8 years ago, in may of 2017. in 2018 a long, aggressive harassment campaign run by the exact sorts of people the reblog was about got this account terminated a few months before the nsfw ban. it took me a while to come back to tumblr and once i did, it took me even longer to openly post about profic stuff like this again. i never in a million years expected to see some old post of mine cross my dash today with almost 70k notes; as i recall, it had a few hundred when this account still existed.

i’m not nearly as confrontational anymore, but if there’s one thing that’s still true, it’s that i stand by everything i said. and i’m glad i said it. scrolling through the notes, i found some old comments disparaging me or this message, but what was important to me was all the comments that said something to the effect of “i needed to hear this”.

i want more people to hear this, really. i want people to know that you can do whatever makes you happy in your fictional works. those characters aren’t people, and you can’t meaningfully hurt them. things you explore fictionally don’t mean you condone or desire them irl. “bad” or cliche writing doesn’t somehow hurt other people, and really, it doesn’t hurt you either. self-indulgence in art is not a crime.

please create what brings you joy. block people who upset or attack you. avoid what you dislike and uplift what you enjoy. fandom is only as serious as you make it, but it’s not activism, and it’s not a test of morals either.

NSFW Content Is Not Inherrently Bad

Somebody drawing erotic artwork is not the fucking end of the world.

Smut is not going to topple society and bring it all crumbling down.

Kinky fanfic is NOT going to come into your house and ruin your life.

Sexuality and desire are just as valid to base artworks off of than any other emotion. Just because something is SFW does not mean it is inherently better or 'morally superior' to NSFW.

I'm legitimately tired of the sex negative bullshit I see everywhere, Tumblr especially. I've seen people call others 'degenerates' with their whole fucking chest... over a fucking drawing. Calm down, it's just a picture, it's not the fucking fall of a fucking empire.

You mustn't allow the sex negativity and puritanism into your life. You have to understand that even if you don't LIKE certain kinky content, if its not hurting REAL LIVING BEINGS then it's ok to exist. People are allowed to be horny, fun fact, and what they do in the safety of their own home or on their own blogs is NONE of your business to police.

I'm tired of adult content being treated like some fucking boogeyman.

I can't believe we're coming up on our three year anniversary in February, aaaahhhhh I'm so excited. I just, I love him so very much, he just feels like my soulmate. He's a muse, he's my beloved, he's my chew toy, he's my Virgin Mary, he's my scandalous whore... he's everything to me.
