JUSTICE FOR MARIA FERNANDA GODINEZ

Maria Godinez was 22 when she spent a girls' weekend in Orlando in 2014. She was at a downtown bar when she was shot by a stray bullet during a police officer's confrontation with an armed man at the bar's entrance.

Officer Eduardo Sanguino was outside of the bar, trying to incapacitate a man named Kody Roach, who had a gun. He fired nine times at Roach and hit him several times, and also hit a fellow police officer. Both Roach and the other police officer survived with injuries, but Maria was killed. Kody Roach's gun turned out to be unloaded.

The death of a bystander due to actions of the police demonstrates an irresponsible use of force, and a failure to deescalate. Even if Maria hadn't been killed, firing nine shots in what was likely a crowded public area is unconscionable. (Orlando, FL)

JUSTICE FOR INDIA BEATY

In 2016, India Beaty was in a parking lot when two plainclothes police officers approached her from behind. It is unclear why they did so – some accounts claim that India was arguing with a man, while others say that the argument was between two men. Either way, the Norfolk Police Department officers were not called to the scene and were originally there for a different purpose.

While there are contradicting accounts of exactly what transpired, what is clear is that within seconds of their arrival, police officers opened fire, shooting India five times in the back and ending her life. Officers claimed that they thought India was holding a real gun in her hand, which later turned out to be a non-firing replica. India's family disputes this account, and a witness at the scene said that India was holding her cell phone.

In January, 2017, the Norfolk Commonwealth Attorney’s Office announced that no charges would be leveled against the officers who killed India. This is unconscionable. Police officers should not be able to kill a wholly unrelated woman purely on suspicion of her behavior, and those that do should be removed and charged for homicide. (Norfolk, Virginia)

JUSTICE FOR TANISHA ANDERSON

In 2014, Tanisha was at home when officers arrived on reports that she had been "disturbing the peace." Tanisha was known to have issues with mental illness and was prescribed medication for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Though police allege that Tanisha suddenly went limp after resisting being escorted and handcuffed, her family disputes this. As witnesses to the situation, they state that they saw an officer use a takedown move to force Tanisha onto the pavement and then place his knee on her back. Tanisha became unresponsive, and was left lying on the ground for 20 minutes until an ambulance arrived. She was pronounced dead at the hospital. The county coroner's office later ruled her death a homicide by asphyxiation, supporting the family's account. (Cleveland, OH)

Police deserve to be held accountable for their crimes against the innocent right?

Then please help by working through this email campaign to let the people in charge know that their passive silence in the case of an abuse of power and injustice will not be tolerated!

People will not stand quiet and idly by while they hurt the lives of so many others. To demonstrate this a website has been developed to email state representatives and police departments about the necessary actions that have to be taken for justice to truly happen. Please help emphasis this point by writing a few emails; or at the very least reposting this post so others may find it as well!

Until the officers are charged in criminal court for their crimes, there is no justice.
