You think Rose's long game--whose full scope she probably never confided to any one person--might've been a transgemist scheme to transform Gemkind into something capable of participating in a planetary ecosystem rather than simply plundering it? The moss, Lion, and the random crystal mutant animals would all be steps toward that goal--and Steven the vehicle of her own transformation (as well as an interspecies liaison, a planetary defender, and a gesture of shared love with her human partner.)
Yes! :D
I mean, I don’t really know what to add to this. I’ve talked about this before and answered asks on it, but thanks for putting it so concisely. :)

Since we're on the topic of Rose, here's my question. In Lion 3: Straight to Video, she seemed to KNOW Steven and her wouldn't be able to both exist. That she'd have to give up all of her physical form and gem dna to become half of him. She KNEW he'd become a human being. But how would she KNOW that when offspring from gems was absolutely unheard of before now and Steven is an unprecedented being? "There's never been anything like Steven." And yet Rose never sounded uncertain there.
Because Rose had worked with making gem-organic hybrids before. We have her moss, which is organic but has gem shards, and Lion, an organic but gem creature. I’ll just gloss over Lion now and talk about him more in the future.
So she wasn’t going in blind. She probably had even more trials than this, because she wanted to make sure that what she was doing would be possible. By Lion 3, she was already heavily pregnant, and so she also had the early parts of the pregnancy to gauge whether Steven would be born. But all in all, I do believe that all pregnancies are a gamble, and that’s something taken for granted. Things could have turned out differently, but they didn’t and even if they weren’t completely certain, they prepared for Steven’s arrival, which is touching.
You or someone else may've already answered this, but how do you think they came up with the name "Crystal Gems" to distinguish themselves? Is it as simple as the crystalline nature of gems or can you think of something more special? And besides that, their signature star, what's THAT a homage too? I know Rose probably had a rose insignia because she grew to love plant and organic life and roses probably ended up as her favorite, but is the star a symbol for home?
“Crystal Gems” actually comes from where the Earth is located. The gems call our Solar System the Crystal System. So Earth is a colony of the Crystal System. Since the Crystal Gems are defenders of Earth, they now identify with Earth. They are the gems of the Crystal System. The Crystal Gems.
As for the five-point star, that comes from Rose herself. She had the star before the war, as seen in Pearl’s hologram in Rose’s Scabbard.

I think the five-pointed star is part of her “five” aesthetic. Her gem has a pentagonal facet and Rose was a great military leader. So her forces could have been identified as the Star Platoon or something of the sort. I say this because Homeworld uses terms like Crystal to describe systems, and I think depending on where Rose’s army was stationed, they would be identified based on that system’s name too.
As for the other gems, none of the gems wear the star prior to Rose’s passing. It’s probably worn out of respect for her and to remember her by. The flower insignia would be the image of Rose herself, and they wouldn’t want to appropriate that, but as a fighting force under Rose, it would make sense that if they wanted to pay homage to her, they’d pick the star.
Rose’s insignia as a flower comes from most likely her ability to grow organic life. In When It Rains, Peridot remarks something smells like Earth citrus. Given the many colonies the gems have, there are probably other planets that support organic life, not identical to ours but still similar. Rose probably grew and modified her own flowers, and took a liking to a flower similar to her dress, which perhaps she called a rose after herself. After all, it’s no guarantee that the flower we see on her shield is the Earth rose we’re all familiar with, especially considering Rose was a skilled botanist who could grow organic flowers with gems as the pistil/stamen. These were the flowers that bloomed from her moss in Lars and the Cool Kids, and it’s an indicator that even before or during plans to have Steven, Rose was already preparing a way for organic life to mix with gem life.
Something I've noticed about Lion: he canonically hunts, but so far seems to confine his preying to animals who, like himself, show evident Gem influence--the crystal-spined basilisk in "Lion 2: The Movie" and the crystal-eyed rat (along with what seems to be the carcass of another basilisk) in the comic story "Lion's Share." (Although that does raise the question of just what the heck goes into Lion Lickers...) Your thoughts?
The fact he hunts for me, indicates that he’s capable of being in the wild. He hasn’t been held in captivity and even if there was a period of time that he was, it wasn’t long enough to dull his natural predatory instincts.
I have personal theories about Lion’s origin, but I think I can save that for another post. Safe to say though that he’s definitely not a pure Earth lion. He has gem characteristics. But I don’t think it’s to the point that he can survive without some sort of sustenance. In the same way something caused Lion to have gem qualities, it did the same to some of the organisms endemic to Earth. Rose’s moss is an example, as is the basilisk you mentioned. But non-gem food just passes through him, in the way it passes through Amethyst when she eats. The only way that sustenance can be attained, is when he ingests something his body can absorb and metabolise, and that happens to also be half-organic, half-gem animals, in the same way we can’t metabolise or make use of cellulose even though we can eat it.
As for Lion Lickers, I do think though that like Amethyst, Lion can eat as a hobby and even though Lion Lickers will never be as good as Cookie Cats, it’s the next best thing. It doesn’t hurt that they’re an ice cream modelled after his image.
I haven’t read the comics yet though, but now I’m even more intrigued by them!
