because of your last ask, do you think the moon goddess statue from season one is blue diamond / related to blue diamond in some way?

My original link was that BD looked remarkably similar to the Moon Goddess statue’s gem and given the motif of fusion in the Lunar Sea Spire, BD might have been the Moon component of the Lunar Sea Goddess.

And I made the argument that the Moon Goddess Statue is probably the Lighthouse Gem, because of the similarities of their gemstones and the power that they had and also that their arcs were centred around relationships.

What severed my original link was, it was pointed out to me that the top of the Lighthouse (and upon closer inspection the Moon Goddess Statue’s) Gem is a circle. And I’m much more comfortable saying that the Moon Goddess and the Lighthouse Gem are the same than saying that Lighthouse Gem and BD are the same at the moment, at least until there’s more evidence. :)

Nonetheless, at the very least I’m willing to say that Moon Goddess was likely a member of Blue’s faction. That she was a central figure in the Spire, a place for thinking (philosophising), which is what I point out is Blue’s specialty, means that she must have been working as an agent of Blue.

Diamonds and Big Cats

I have a light and fluffy theory about the Diamonds coming off from researching about them for my last long post.

There have been a lot of posts, including mine, that point to some sort of relationship between Lion and Pink Diamond. The possibilities vary from Lion’s being a repository of information to Lion’s being a corrupted PD.

Lion’s bears marked similarities to PD’s hair.

And in Buddy’s Book, Rose had an affinity for lions. We don’t know if they looked exactly as Steven pictured them because from the beginning his renditions of Buddy and the gems were, by his own admission, his imagination. But it’s rather clear that Rose, one of PD’s more important quartzes, had a thing for lions.

It seems the big cat affinity extends to another Diamond as well. The Lunar Sea Spire is heavily connoted as BD’s territory, not only because of the colour scheme but because of its purpose. Bismuth said she built “Spires for thinkers to think in,” and it would make sense that Blue, who handled diplomatic matters, would mange this “haven for gems” as Pearl calls it in Cheeseburger Backpack.

On the walls of the spire pillar, we see this image as the Crystal Gems enter.

The heads of these creatures look like dogs’ or horses’, with their long faces, but the legs and tail look undeniably like a cat’s portrayal. Much like PD’s wild, five-pointed hair, lions had the big manes. For someone like BD, with smoothed down hair and a sleek silhouette, she may have preferred a big cat that suited her aesthetic, like a panther.

Now imagine the Diamonds’ seeing reports of the wildlife on Earth for the first time and falling in love with the big cat family, like giant kittens. YD I’d peg for a tiger-lover and WD probably had dozens of leopards.

A universal love of cats that spans lightyears.

Two thoughts about your Blue Diamond theory! The first is the one about the gem cut. Something I think noteworthy is that we never see the bottom of the lighthouse gem- but it seems to flatten out rather than go to a point. My theory is that Gems aren't able to change their cut, but some Gems might actually have two different "faces" to their gem- and they have some means of switching which facet is outwards. It's not perfect, but it's my explanation [1/?]

I have a similar, but distinct theory from yours that Lapis and the lighthouse Gem are components that come together to /form/ Blue, rather than Blue and Lapis being components of a larger Gem. Because heterogeneous fusions like Garnet were unheard of, most Gems wouldn't know that a Gem with four arms would have to be a fusion- Blue could easily cover Lapis's gem- which is already in a discreet, hidden place- and pass as a single Gem. [2/?]
This would add context to Lapis's comment that people normally only see her if something bad is happening- people in the fandom have said similar things about Ruby and Sapphire, that Steven usually only sees them when something upsetting happens that forces Garnet apart. It also would give Blue an extra reason to reject Garnet- if heterogeneous fusion becomes widely known and used it could cast suspicion on Blue's extra parts and height. [3/?]
The other part of the theory is just an observation I had about the palanquin. In The Answer, the legs are only visible when they're actively in use- before and after, they're folded away and out of sight, but in Buddy's Book, the palanquin's legs are out, but staggered- the palanquin is leaning to one side. This would suggest it was abandoned in a hurry- without time for it to be set down nicely or the legs to be put away. [4/4]

I think it’s a really interesting idea! The implications of this would be that the Diamonds aren’t necessarily of the diamond-stone, though, if that’s what you’re getting at. The name would be conferred more as a rank than as a marker of their gem-etics.

One other implication from this is that BD would have looked aesthetically and physically different from the other Diamonds, which can in turn be supported by the different appearance she has in the mural of the Moon Base. But I do wonder about two things (maybe they’re not answerable at the time, but they’re questions I feel are worth asking nonetheless):

First, if having more limbs and the other markers of being a fusion (save for the visible second gem) were not something people would question, why would BD be going great lengths to hide them in her appearances?

Second, the fusion statues in the Lunar Sea Spire are more or less worshipped or at the very least representative of something positive. In that regard, I would wonder about why no one thought to question who these gems were. Because if BD’s attempts at hiding her fusion markers were successful, then the vast majority of people wouldn’t have any idea who those statues were supposed to be.

Also, on Lapis, I agree that she seems to have played a less-visible role in the fusion. It suits her very much to hang back and watch how things play out and then make decisions from there.

And I agree with the observation on the Palanquin. It supports the idea that BD was either ambushed or was running away from something about to ambush her.

One last idea that I find interesting is that gems can look completely different based from which perspective you’re looking. That holds a lot of implications, first and foremost that something so genetically planned could actually hold some variation after all.

In fact, it reminds me of when we first saw Bismuth’s gem in the bubble. There were so many attempts at trying to fit her gem on a humanoid body and it was a seeming stroke of genius that the real Bismuth had her gem what Steven called, “an innie.”

PLEASE HELP. ANYONE! I have tried to tell people that Bismuth was only being figurative with that "just another quartz soldier made right here in the dirt" line and that Rose narratively, timewise and canonically wise HAD to predate Earth but they're saying "NOPE! BISMUTH SAID SHE CAME FROM EARTH AND THAT'S THE EVIDENCE!" Do you have any counterarguments with real evidence to the contrary that will fix this?

I’ve discussed before how unlikely it was that Rose was created here and was a completely new lifeform on Earth. Much of the language she uses shows that she doesn’t identify with Earth. I bring this up a lot, that she refers to Homeworld simply as “Home.” If she had been born on Earth, and later decided to fight for it, she would have always called it home.

The way Amethyst goes back to the Kindergarten and calls it “Home” after she’s had a rough run-in with Pearl and Garnet for instance, shows that gems do identify with their place of creation as their home. Even Jasper, in her most desperate moment, decides to go back to her Kindergarten. Jasper hates Earth because she lost everything there, twice. But she still feels a connection to it.

Jasper: Help..? Help?! I’ve been fighting from the second I broke free of the Earth’s crust, because of what YOU did to my colony! Because of what YOU did to my planet! Because of what YOU did to my Diamond!

Source: SU Wiki

Jasper still refers to Earth as her colony. Rose has never used this kind of language when talking about Earth. There was never any sense that this was her planet. She says, in Rose’s Scabbard, “I’m going to stay and fight for this planet.” In that regard, Rose cannot have been made here.

The fact that she even starts the Rebellion is an indicator of her predating the war, a fact which discounts her being created in many of the mid and post war Kindergartens. Were there Kindergartens created as soon as the Earth colony was established? Yes. But what do we see from Gems like Amethyst? A good deal of these gems looked the same, down to the hair and uniform. Although you could argue for a uniform change, the white hair is something characteristic of the quartzes we’ve seen pop out of Earth, something Rose does not have.

And if we just look at the narrative role of someone like Rose, we do talk about someone who is more than a common quartz soldier. Pearl has said that she and Rose would go to places like the Lunar Sea Spire, a place Bismuth said was only for thinkers. This indicates someone with higher standing than someone just born yesterday.

Pearl had some credence in saying she was Rose’s most trusted person. It’s probably true. There are a lot of things only Pearl knows about Rose. And that would explain why Bismuth doesn’t know about some of those things. Going further, Rose kept a lot of secrets, many of which she took to her grave. Lion is just one of them. She kept the existence of Bubbled Bismuth a secret for hundreds of years. That’s a heavy thing. It would stand to say that Rose, who I’ve mentioned before is terrible at resolving loose ends, would be okay just dropping whom she was in the past to start a new life on Earth, which recall, was her entire goal in the first place.

That would presuppose an old life she was running away from. An old life that would be totally consistent with her character if she’d just buried the idea and kept it a secret forever.

Seeing as gems are all kind of given roles from when they are made and are expected to act according to those roles, do you think that gems have places to hang out? Like theaters and that stuff. Or is that only for aristocratic gems only.

I do think there are places of leisure for all gems! And the greatest point of evidence is the Lunar Sea Spire. Pearl says, “It was an oasis for Gems on Earth. It’s abandoned now, but we can still save it with this statue!” (Source: SU Wiki).

I mentioned before that art is something that gems recognise, create, and appreciate. It’s a marker of their status as an advanced civilisation. Theatre is definitely one of those things. Music is another; singing and dancing as well. Pearl and Garnet seem to dabble in theatre themselves, as a previous asker noted. In our own world, theatre had many different levels. There were plays for the rich, and also for the common folk, which was exactly what Shakespeare’s work was meant for.

Gems most likely don’t work all the time and non-stop. When we see the gems in Blue Diamond’s court in The Answer, outside of the actual fight, most of them were just milling around, not really doing anything. There’s also the idea that gems have a natural inclination towards play, particularly soldier gems like Amethyst and the Rubies. There are most likely spaces for these, as it generally helps their psychosocial well-being and can help increase their productivity for their Homeworld. The Ruby Squad clearly has off-hours, enough for them to bond and have funny moments. And Jasper remarked in The Return, “You needed me for this?” Making it sound as though she was requested, or called for this mission, which means she was doing something non-work related just previously.
