Are you doing okay, Poet?

All things considered, I am in a much better place now than I was six months ago, or even two years ago. I went through a lot of life changes and what’s happening to the world in public health, politically, and economically, has served as a bitter cherry to my messed up sundae. So, if I had answered this sooner, perhaps the answer would have been different, but I can now confidently say, “I am okay,” and mean it. Thank you for asking :)

I am so sorry to hear about the racism and disregard you've encountered. It is horrifying and deeply upsetting to encounter discrimination in a place that you think of as safe (or relatively safe), and to encounter it from a person who should be a mentor and possibly someone to look up to. What's more, the lack of reaction or care from friends and people whose advice you value (and other students in general) make it many times worse. I am so sorry that you are dealing with this and that your----

I firmly believe you'd have a very different experience at my college, but that doesn't help you in the slightest. You have every right to be upset, and to be upset at the lack of response from peers and other faculty, and the lack of recourse available to you. I wish I could do more to help. I hope that you find good people to surround yourself with, and things get better. Lots of virtual support from far away!

Thank you, really. :)

It’s great knowing that in some places, formal institutions are taking it upon themselves to stomp out this behaviour. And I really am grateful for the support and validation. If it helps anyone, I freely talk about my experience back at my university. I can’t press a formal case without my grades becoming at stake, but I can make people feel uncomfortable and disturbed, and I’m hoping that’s a good first step towards getting more people to act and, in a way, “police” behaviour. I’d like to think that had people shown more disgust at the way I was spoken to (because there was a class full of people who were dead silent), my professor would have stopped himself. Let actions then speak louder than words.

You don't need to explain! But if you do wish to, we do care about whatever was going on :) Welcome back!! (and I hope that these upcoming weeks are better than the last two!!)

Thank you! It’s great to be back and as this week approaches its end, I’m really feeling okay now. I’m not as worked up by the thought of it anymore and I take it as a sign I’ve moved past raw anger. Life is normal. :)

And thank you for caring. You don’t have to. No one has to. That makes it even better. :)

Thanks to everyone who helped me out and let me talk to them earlier. I’m feeling a lot better now and want to start responding to asks again. Also I made this turtle. I know it’s not SU-related, but turtles help me de-stress. And whales. I love giant flying whales. That’s another story though. I’m really okay now :)

Thank you all for caring and I hope you like the Turtle Thanks. :D
