A collection of analyses on my current fixations. I go by Nes.

Second photo of my #scienceandfiction series. My worldview has been shaped by books more than anything, so I thought it only appropriate to choose the eye for this. Novels, plays, comics, manga, textbooks, have all shaped how I analyse and enjoy media.

The detail on this one was more than anything I'd ever done before and I learned a lot of new techniques while experimenting.

Maybe I'll work on my own watermark next ^__^ and let me know what your favorite books are in the comments

Just finished the second photo of my Science(&)Fiction series. BOOKS! I'm having a lot of fun drawing and sacrificing my eyes to the art gods.

I've decided to keep wips and my concepts to Instagram @poetofthepiano to avoid clogging up this blog because...

Next week we go back to once a week (hopefully) analyses! I've queued up a few over the last month and I have quite a lot to discuss about The Midnight Gospel. So stay tuned :D

Thank You for your Story Prompts

Before the weekend, I asked all of you for some story prompts and I really wasn’t expecting to get more than a handful of responses. But the prompts I’ve received are much more than what I thought I’d get. Thank you to all who submitted. As promised, I’ll be writing short stories on the first 5 prompts I’ve received.

For all the prompts after the 5th, worry not, I will get to them too, just not with the first batch.

Also, a quick blog update, tomorrow I’m posting Part 2 of the Spinel Character Analysis. You can read it for more context as the Part 2 will be about her relationship with Rose and how Rose’s abandonment affected her and got her to where she was in the SU Movie.

Also, the Midnight Gospel is definitely one of those shows worth several rewatches, and I have plans for how I’m going to tackle the analyses of the episodes, because the themes are so dense. Stay tuned :D

All the best to everyone in these times!

An Open Call for Story Prompts

While writing analyses on our favourite works of fiction, I want to try something new. It’s very experimental, but I want to hear your prompts for short stories, and I’ll try writing a few of them. They can be as general (one-word prompts) or as specific as you want. They can involve created characters or plot points, settings, genres, limitations (like rhyming), anything under the sun.

The wear of writing for research and work on top of anxiety about the uncertainty surrounding the world is just gnawing at me, and I want to do something creative.

I’ll start with maybe 5 prompts and post the stories on my blog, together with a link to the asker’s Tumblr (unless they’re anonymous, that’s fine too).

If you want to submit a prompt, just send ask or a DM. I hope this’ll be fun :D

Blog Updates

Hello! As it has been a while, I think a quick FAQ is in order because I have 300 messages in my ask box.

Will there still be SU analyses?

This is perhaps the most pertinent question I’ve been receiving. The short answer is, yes. There are still plenty of things I want to talk about, and SUF rekindled my interest in talking about them.

The long answer is, while there are still a bunch of things I want to talk about, SU has effectively ended. And in the wait for its ending, I’ve also come across other things I want to talk about too.

It was difficult for me, receiving feedback on my SVTFOE analyses that people preferred this remained an SU-exclusive blog. And that made it difficult for me to keep writing here when I felt a pressure to focus only on SU. Now that it’s ended, though, I hope that while the SU content will keep coming out, it will definitely be peppered with other things as well.

Where have you been?/Are you okay?/Are you still alive?

Yes! Very much alive. As I mentioned in my Reviving the blog post, I’ve been working after college, and the adjustment to that kept me very busy the last two years. But the last few months, despite everything that’s going on, I think I’ve got the hang of this thing.

I currently work in health policy, and, well, given everything that’s going on, there are days when it’s been hard to want to stay in this line of work. I also teach in university part-time. Both haven’t been easy with the pandemic, especially since there’s a lockdown being implemented where I am, and just living in a developing country, where politically and economically, things have been on edge in normal times, now all the existing structural problems are exacerbated.

And after working my butt off for the last two years (or let’s all of them), I’ve been accepted into some Ivy League grad schools in the USA (future updates on that later), where I hope to start putting my over-analysis skills into even more practice this Fall.

So I’m alive. Like many, I’m fighting very hard to keep building the future with everyone else making their way through every day in these tough times.

Where is this blog going?

And that leads to this final question in the mini-FAQ. Aside from SU, I enjoy a lot of other media very much. Some of these are:

  • Dead Cells- I reached 4BC earlier this year and can talk about strategy and lore
  • Boku no Hero Academia (My Hero Academia)- I am fully caught up with the anime and really like the deconstruction of the superhero genre
  • Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer)- I am caught up with the anime and manga and it’s a ride, isn’t it?
  • The McElroy Family of Podcasts- I started with Sawbones: A Marital Tour of Misguided Medicine, and got into My Brother My Brother and Me, The Adventure Zone (an actual-play D&D podcast), and the rest of their shows
  • Harley Quinn- the comics, but Birds of Prey was unexpectedly enjoyable
  • And many other animated shows like BoJack Horseman, Voltron Legendary Defender, Tuca and Bertie, and Yakusoku no Neverland (The Promised Neverland)

And I may or may not discuss these and others, especially if prompted by an ask or a comment about them.

Also, the diversity of my interest has me reading constantly, and I’ve started GM-ing D&D, working on podcasts, and overall just writing more. And if y’all want to see that content, just let me know.

Reviving the blog

Like the Chilean miners emerging from the depths... (if you get the reference #MBMBAM)

I’m alive. I’m mostly okay. Things aren’t so great for my country and the whole world, but more on that in another post.

Just wanted to put out there, that I’m reviving this blog. For real this time. More analyses. But big updates coming.

I’ve been working in the public health sector for the last two years, and well, right now is crazy, but also the time when I felt most ready to come back to this community. In the mean time, my ask box is open and if anyone needs someone to reach out to, I’m all ears.

Some more updates:

  • Now that I’ve checked my Inbox, I’d like to thank everyone for their concern and well-wishes and super patience (not just patience, but super patience) during the time I was adjusting

Why, I feel like Champagne (Yellow Pearl) after being asked to model :))

  • I’ll try to get one more SU analysis about the recent developments in before Change Your Mind
  • I’m also going to start going through my Inbox after that post has been written and I don’t mind writing about some older material/older characters as well
  • I am still recovering from VLD Season 8 (about 70% okay at this point). Just saying. Fan art and fan theories and fan fiction have been very comforting :))
  • Thanks for the positive response re: writing about Yakusoku no Neverland. Growing up very Asian, I watched anime alongside Western cartoons my whole life. I’m excited to be writing a post about the first two episodes (I purposely didn’t read the manga because I was anticipating this show)
  • Weekends are probably going to be my new posting schedule for long posts, but I’ll take the time to answer short asks on the weekdays when I can
  • I’m considering bridging this blog with some other site as some have suggested and am open to suggestions!
  • And I’m looking for writing projects to flex the creative muscles in my brain instead of just dissecting everything, also open to suggestions!

Have a lovely day everyone :)

reblogged

Question time:

So apparently, this (and 3 other similar posts of mine) were flagged for adult content? Is it worth appealing? One is an analysis post on death (following the Lars’ Head episode) and the other is about the way trauma is written in SU (from my early baby days on Tumblr).

Does anyone have any opinions on this?

Thank you for the advice! I’ll just try pressing that appeal button then :) nothing to lose

Update: Everything has been cleared up and all of the posts have been un-flagged.

Thank you everyone!

I’m back from a real hiatus I took. I wasn’t planning on taking a 6-month break, but I guess I sort of did. I suppose all the times I insisted I was taking a break from Tumblr, it never really was a break. In the time I was gone, I graduated valedictorian from one of the country’s top universities, with two degrees, and started working 3 jobs. HAHAHA. On a more personal note, I’ve begun to reach out to people again, while dealing with the aftermath of leaving an abusive relationship. It’s been rough. I never saw myself as the type of person to experience triggers, but it’s happened that I was just a shaking crying mess because I responded to a text late or I had a panic attack because someone did something else reminiscent of the emotional abuse I went through.

I’ve been adjusting to all the changes so far. It feels good to be alive, and I’m glad I really took the time to focus on myself and end what was becoming a terrible college experience (thanks to said abusive relationship) on a high note.

It’s back to the point that I feel I can blog again without compromising my work, personal relationships, or my blog. Or, rather, I’d like to try getting back into blogging.

I’m all caught up with SU now and found the latest batch of episodes emotional for various reasons. I can't wait to write about them. I don’t know where to begin, though, since it’s been so long. So I’m very open to suggestions! Something like a “Format (e.g. Character Analysis/Some Thoughts/Song Analysis/Episode Analysis) +Topic” would be really really helpful getting this blog back on its feet!

I do want to start working on your asks, but I feel that if I can answer a lot through big, organised posts like the ones suggested above, then it would be a whole lot more coherent than just blurting my thoughts.

Thank you for your patience and support :D It’s good to be back

I’m caught up with the new SU episodes and my is there a lot to talk about in terms of character development and lore! I’m really excited to be back and I can’t wait to start writing again. Thanks for your patience.

The visuals whenever Garnet narrates or explains are always stunning and Your Mother and Mine has some of my favourite visual storytelling.

In the meantime, I’ll be catching up on SVTFOE and the fifth season of VLD.

It’s been such a tough few months for me but I’m starting to be back at a place where I feel like myself again. Coming to terms with my experience of abuse was filled with a lot of self-pity and self-blame. I didn’t want to bring that negativity into this blog. Thank you for bearing with me though.
