She Died, and I Hate Pride: On Sera's Inheritance

Warnings: Discussion of fantasy racism and a troubled adoptive parent and child relationship.

Well, she died, and I hate pride.
– Sera

Sera is a potential companion and love interest in Dragon Age: Inquisition, a city elf, a fun-loving prankster, and a senior member of the Friends of Red Jenny, a coalition of commoners across many cities in Thedas who band together to enact revenge for abuses of power by the nobility and help each other in small ways.

If you befriend Sera in Inquisition, you learn that she was orphaned as a young child in Denerim, too young to remember her parents, and taken in by a minor noble called Lady Emmald. Sera confides that she has negative feelings about her guardian because Emmald lied to her to protect her own pride. She bought cookies from a local baker, pretended they were her own, and told Sera the baker hated elves so Sera would never go there and find her out—with apparently no regard for the effect this might have on the young elven girl.

It’s pretty clear from Sera’s in-game dialogue that she doesn’t like talking about her past. When the Inquisitor gains enough approval to ask her more about herself, she responds, “Suppose. It’s embarrassing enough now, may as well.”

As with much Dragon Age lore, the book’s supplemental background on Sera comes to us in the form of some in-universe documents, a collection of information on Sera and Red Jenny. It has been annotated in the margins by Sera herself, responding with increasing annoyance to the prying into her background.

DAI Companion Styles: Sera

The fashion in the Dragon Age universe (in keeping with the overall aesthetics of the games) has undergone an interesting kind of evolution over the course of the three games, various side media, and fourteen real-world years this franchise has been around. And disjointed as some of it may be, it’s something that interests me, both in terms of its real-world influences and in terms of the in-universe implications for worldbuilding and characters. It’s an element for which I would love to see even more discussion and analysis, I thought it would be fun to dive into it by taking a look at the different base outfits companions wear in Inquisition, and talking about how they fit with the characters and the world they inhabit. I don't know how many of these I will end up doing, but I'd like to do some and I think it will be fun.

Disclaimer: I am not a fashion expert, dress historian, or professional designer! I'm just a gamer who likes to sew and has a casual interest in historical fashion, and a great interest in fantasy worldbuilding and the implications thereof, and that's where I'm coming from on these posts. I'd also love to hear thoughts from fans who have a more in-depth background in historical dress, textiles, etc. Also I'm going to be talking about clothing and not armor because I know a lot less about armor.

I’m going to start with Sera, of course, because it's me. ;)

Sera Mod Alpha~

So, I’d like to try to be more proactive about releasing large mods-in-progress incrementally for those who are interested in them, rather than potentially just letting them languish on my hard drive for months to years, and @dalishious‘s Low Elf Esteem series has got me thinking again about all the tweaks I’d like to make to Sera’s disastrous dialogue.

The long of it is in the blog post, but the short of it is that I cut the infamous transphobic comment from WEWH, hid the infamous everpresent option to kick Sera out of the Inquisition so long as her disposition remains above hostile, and snipped a few lines from her introduction Lyd pointed out as being weirdly racialized in that Low Elf Esteem linked above.

Am in fact taking suggestions. Probably won’t find a lot of stuff feasible to do in practice but it should make for a good conversation anyway. o/

v0.2a is here in which:

  • You can no longer kick Sera out of the Inquisition by selecting that condescending option off the dialogue wheel and
  • You can no longer kick Sera out of the Inquisition in the same breath as breaking up with her

because let’s be honest that was some bullshit

sera mod has been updated to v0.3a, including:

  • Restored cut lines that now play randomly when the Inquisitor suggests roof time: “cookies on the roof?”, “biscuits on a building?”, “wafers up the rafters?”, “buns on the battlements?”, and “scones on our home?”
  • Removed the transphobic comment following Sera’s “I thought it would be bigger” because if you’re gonna make a dick joke just fuckin commit it’s not that complicated

What can I say… I like my blades as I like my babes. Sharp and deadly. Amazing characters, who’ve struggled a lot, went through abuse and came out of it still smiling and slaying, trully they are daily inspirations for me.

They just deserve a lot more attention from this fandom. A lot more. A lot.

Left to right: Sera, Briala, Leliana and Isabela.
