What does it do?

  • Enhance the quality of in-game shadows by smoothening them. Your lighting setting needs to be set to High or Very High to see the change.
  • Disable the dark lines (Ambient Occlusion) that appear around the edges of objects, walls, and floors.

MXAO was turned off when the photos above were taken.

How to install it

Windows users:

  1. Locate your TS4_x64.exe. If you are an EA App user, it is typically at C:/Program Files/EA Games/The Sims 4/Game/Bin. If it is located elsewhere and you absolutely have no idea where it is exactly, simply right-click on the Sims 4 icon on your Desktop and select 'Open File Location'. It will lead you to its location.
  2. There, you will see the default GraphicsRules file. Simply back it up and replace it with my version.

MacOS users:

  1. In Finders, press cmd + F and type in "The Sims 4".
  2. Once you see "The Sims 4.app", right-click on it and select "Show Package Contents". The default GraphicsRules file is located at Contents/Resources.
  3. Back it up and replace it with my version.

Important notes

  • You need to repeat the process whenever you update or repair your game.
  • If you use ReShade or GShade, you must turn off Edge Smoothing and rely on FXAA and SMAA instead so that the shaders targeting 3D objects like MXAO, DOF, AdaptiveFog, and DepthHaze can function properly.
