Shy stared into her mug. Not for the first time, she wished she had a mother, father, an aunt, anyone she could call up for advice. Raii’sa was here, but the only kid the smuggler had ever been around was a younger Shy, and she hadn’t been much more than a child herself at the time. Andi wasn’t a difficult child by any means but finding out she appeared to be force sensitive was something Shy wasn’t sure how to handle. If only she could find Torian… he might not know how to handle this any more than she did, but at least she wouldn’t feel so alone.
Sitting in a quiet corner of the base cantina, Shy waited for her only hope to arrive. Senya was force sensitive and had raised three children, all of them sensitives as well. Questions ran through her mind as she waited. How could she train her if she wasn’t a force user herself? Would Sana-Rae and the others be willing to help? Would it be wrong to use alliance resources for her child? Should she hire someone to help from outside the alliance? Her questions came to a screeching halt as Senya crossed the room to her.
“You wanted to speak to me, Commander?” Senya carefully settled onto a chair across from Shy, signaling to a server droid for a drink. “I’m sorry I kept you waiting.”
“No, Senya, it’s fine. Thank you for coming. I’m not sure who else to talk to about this…” She shifted a little guiltily. Should she really bother Senya with this? “I… I’m beginning to think Andi is force sensitive.”
Senya took the glass from the returned droid and looked at Shy amused, “You need advice?”
“Yes!” Clearing her throat, she cast Senya an apologetic glance. “I mean… If you’re willing, I do have a few questions. From one mother to another?” She sighed, scooting closer, leaning over the table a bit. “I’ve never been around kids until Andi, and I’ve been alright learning as I go, but now…”
Senya smiled in understanding, “Now you find yourself in uncharted space.” Taking a sip of her drink, she watched Shy nod. “It has been a while since my children were little, but I think I remember a thing or two.” Her smile faded, “Though given the way they turned out…”
Shy reached across the table, placing a hand on Senya’s. “You had to fight against Valkorion to raise them. It’s not your fault, Senya.” Withdrawing her hand again, she took a swallow of caf. “I want to make sure she’s trained. Do you think Sana-Rae and the others in the enclave would be a good place to start? Or should I hire someone? I don’t even know who I could hire. Or maybe I should just try to help her and let her work it out on her own for now? Do I even have the right to ask for alliance members help? Would it be overstepping or a misuse of resources?” She was rambling, but once started, the questions just seemed to pour out.
Senya chuckled. “Commander, relax. From what I’ve seen, you seem to be handling the girl well. No, I don’t think you would be overstepping to ask the enclave for help with her.” It was Senya’s turn to pat Shy’s hand. “She’s young. Depending on her level of abilities, she may not need more than someone to show her how to focus.” Downing the last of her drink, she rose, moving around the table closer to Shy. “Now, why don’t we talk about the things you know she can do, and I can help you make plans from there.”
Shy smiled and began telling Senya all the little details she had been noticing over the past few weeks. Maybe this wouldn’t be so hard after all.
