Sense and Sensibility
In honor of the birth of my all time favorite author, Jane Austen, here are illustrations by Charles E. Brock from the 1895 edition of Pride and Prejudice. Persuasion is my favorite Austen novel, however.
So, how do people confuse Jane Austen's novels as Victorian?
I mean, seriously people, you must clearly have no idea how many time periods in England are named. But if you do need help, here are some basic examples that might help you actually make intelligent statements about British literature:
- Queen Elizabeth: time period during which she ruled and things done or written during that time referred to as Elizabethan.
- When one dynasty rules for a while: i.e. the Stuarts, the Tudors, etc. The Stuart Period and The Tudor Period.
- Queen Victoria: time period from which she ruled, The Victorian Era
Ok, now that we have an understanding of how many time periods are named, we must delve into the fact that if an author wrote something then, it is often associated with that period. This requires facts about when the author wrote their work.
So, Jane Austen lived from 1775-1817, and her works were 1st published during the period between 1811 to 1818. This period was known as The Regency Period, due to King George III suffering from insanity brought on by then an unknown reason, and his heir, the eventual George IV, ruled as regent from 1811 to 1820, hence the name.
Queen Victoria was born in 1819, but she did not become Queen until 1837 and ruled until 1901, her death.
We can conclude, and know for a fact based on this information, that Jane Austen’s writing is NOT Victorian, due to herself never having lived nor written anything during this time period.
Now you know, so can you please label her wonderful writings correctly!!!!!!

In response to a Tumblr post that read: “I wish I was born in the 18th century of England; when women and girls still wore dresses and corsets, when the way to make new acquaintances was by attending a ball, when you were able to fall in love by just a look in the other’s…
Who cares? The world needs more Romanticism. It doesn’t matter if it’s denial of the reality of society in 18th century England, because no one is time traveling back there anyway. I fucking hate it when people who feel the need to ruin someone else’s daydreaming, escapism, or interests (take your pick on the terminology) to make themselves feel more realistic and righteous. Why do you care so much?
PS, the Regency era was not in the 18th century.

whatever, I really like this movie and the book.
I'm watching Clueless right now....I ordered Emma by Jane Austen because the film is loosley based off the book. I use to be a Jane Austen fanatic when I was 15, obsessed with 1810's, and Sense and Sensibility.
