MY COUSIN VINNY (1992) || LEGALLY BLONDE (2001)
i just want to one day be loved like elle woods’ sorority sisters loved her
they all simply do not understand why elle wants to go to harvard so bad... yet they help her study, grade her tests, motivate her and all around fully support her from the moment she decides to go and never stop believing in elle not for a single second... like wow name me one sweeter moment in all of cinema, i’ll wait
sorry to be legally blonde blogging on main once again but i just wanted to talk about how easy it would’ve been to screw that movie up. the entire premise is based around a girl doing the most to get a guy, the main conflict of the film is the one between elle and viv, elle and her friends are stereotypical girly girls, etc - all that is just a perfect setup for a kind of passive aggressive lowkey misogynistic film that aims at actual feminist themes but falls short at #girlboss. but it doesn’t! while vivian is certainly catty to elle at first the insults aren’t sexist, vivian is just threatened but the confrontation is surprisingly and refreshingly... levelheaded? is the best way i can describe it. there is none of that one scene that a lot of 90’s movies seem to have where the two female protags have a fight where they insult each other’s appearance and then latch onto each other’s hair and yell bloody murder. ya know the one. there is none of that, none of the throwing around lowkey insults to women left and right, and in the end it works out quite beautifully because the only character we meet who is actually outright sexist is warner, which sets him up to be a gigantic asshole without having to have him like kill a kitten or something. it’s clever writing! and for a movie that came out in 2001 to toe that line between empowerment and sexism so well and come out the other side an enjoyable story with realistic women that does not fall under sexist tropes and stands the test of time is very admirable imo
anyway,
i love Legally Blonde so much. all of the women are so supportive of each other im??
- when Elle was supposed to get engaged, none of the girls were jealous, they were genuinely happy for her n helped her get ready for the big dinner
- when her bf broke up with her they were supportive
- when Elle says she wants to go to harvard the counselor lady is like but ur major is fashion, do u have any backup plan? n elle is like nope im going to harvard n the lady is like okay then here’s what u gotta do.
- her friends didnt get why she wanted to go to law school but supported her anyway, and helped her study
- when she got 179 on her exam (more than her goal), they treated her like a queen
and that’s only in the first 18 minutes of the movie
Legally Blonde is a “girl power” movie with killer inspirational and positive attitude disguised as a stereotypical blonde movie.

I remember how much her realization that she was “never going to be good enough for him” resonated with me when I first watched this movie. She decided to push herself, not to be with him, but to prove him the fuck wrong.
Strong female role models who can still wear pink and love fashion. Yes yes yes.
I FUCKING LOVE THIS MOVIE OH MY GODDDDDDDDDD
CAN WE JUST STOP FOR A SEC THO?
HE’S INSULTING HER FOR BEING DUMB
SHE GOT INTO THAT SCHOOL ON HER OWN.
WARNER NEEDED HIS DADDY TO CALL THEM TO BE ABLE TO GET IN.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE NO ONE EVEN UNDERSTANDS.
legally blonde is directly and specifically responsible for women becoming the majority of law students which in turn will literally have a material positive impact on modern society and i’m not being hyperbolic in any way… i hope reese witherspoon knows this
Isn’t Reese witherspoon old enough to portray a presidential candidate where is Legally Blonde: Commander In Chic I’m not fucking playing around
okay but elle woods though
- had a 4.0 as an undergrad
- got a 179 on her LSATs when a 180 is a perfect score
- got into HARVARD LAW SCHOOL which is one of the most prestigious law schools in the country
- after she’s humiliated by several professors and peers alike instead of quitting elle makes up her mind that she is going to kick law school’s ass
- refused to reveal a secret told to her in confidence even though it would have advanced her career
- is an amazing friend who not only helps her friend get her dog back from her deadbeat ex, but she also helps her friend meet a new man
- instead of competing with her ex’s new girl friend the two of them eventually become best friends and ditch the jerk together
- even after following her ex to harvard in an attempt to win him back, elle realizes that he’s a jerk and she’s so much better than him
- turns down said jerk when he comes crawling back
- wins her first trial using not only ingenious deductive reasoning and her knowledge of fashion and proves that she is not a helpless “dumb blonde”
- elle woods though
Study like Elle Woods
tomorrow is 100% study mode
I love Elle. Actually, after watching Legally Blonde for the first time I was like ‘I wanna be a lawyer’… 13/14 years later here I am. At law school.
The greatest ending in film history
Elle Woods was hollering back before the movement. This is why i love this movie. It’s so progressive. Elle is a femme feminist who comes by it the hard way. She doesn’t change for the bookish people, the elitists, or for the feminists. She just does what she needs to do, and what she wants, even when at first it was chasing a boy. Then the movie drops the romance. IT DROPS THE ROMANCE. chick flicks don’t do that. Emmett asking her out is a footnote at the very end. And this whole time, she is classy, and lady like, and has pride in herself and her work. She’ll go to a costume party as a playboy bunny, but like hell will she sleep with her professor for an internship. Elle is my feminist role model
Same.
Elle Woods 4ever
I remember listening to my DAD defend Legally Blonde. An uncle was saying “Oh look, it’s that stupid movie again.” as he flipped through the channels. My dad responded with “Oh yeah, that movie where the blonde girl with great grades works really hard to get into pre-law, studies hard and proves herself to her peers and bosses while maintaining her integrity and not sleeping with her boss? What a terrible message to send girls.”
Also, I love this movie because Reese Witherspoon.
And don’t forget that she has serious female friends and wins the case by way of her specialist knowledge of so-called “feminine things” that no one else takes seriously enough to even bother with.
The movie also passes the Bechdel test.
LET’S NOT FORGET that even though it starts with a situation where two girls are rivals for the same guy, they BOTH choose to ignore the social codes (and hollywood bylaws) that tell them they should be cat-fighting and trying to one-up each other, and instead they realize that they make good working partners and better friends and screw rivalry, AND ALSO HAVE EACH OTHER’S BACKS RE: WORKPLACE SEXUAL HARASSMENT. And that it portrays sororities as places where women can learn to work together and respect each other and help each other out, which sets the stage for the way Elle treats everyone she meets for the rest of the movie. OH AND IT HAS A FAT SIDE CHARACTER WHO OVERCOMES EMOTIONAL ABUSE, IS NEVER FAT-SHAMED OR USED AS THE BRUNT OF A FAT JOKE, AND LANDS THE HOTTEST MAN IN THE ENTIRE FILM.
Elle Woods could lift Thor’s hammer
#what like it’s hard
