CTV News is projecting the New Brunswick Liberals will form a majority government in the province, returning to power for the first time since 2018. Hundreds of thousands of New Brunswickers headed to the polls Monday to vote in the province’s 61st election. New leader Susan Holt brought the party to victory after the exodus of former head Ken Vickers following the 2020 election’s disappointing showing for the Liberals. Holt will become the first female premier of New Brunswick.

Blaine Higgs, one of the most transphobic and otherwise one of the most social Conservative Premiers in Canada's, term is over.

This is a good day.

UCP Party Spokeperson: "Yes the premier of Alberta believes that the United States government uses 'chemtrails' to poison and control the population. But she does not believe the US government is spraying chemtrails in Alberta. So that's alright."

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's office says her recent comments about chemtrails don't mean she believes the United States government is spraying them in the province. "The premier was simply sharing what she has heard from some folks over the summer on this issue," Smith's spokesperson Savannah Johannsen said Tuesday in a statement. "She was not saying that she believed the U.S. government was using chemtrails in Alberta." Johannsen added: "The premier has heard concerns from many Albertans about this topic. In response, the provincial government looked into the issue and found no evidence of chemtrails occurring in Alberta."

To be clear, the premier's office just admitted that Danielle Smith used government resources to look into a batshit conspiracy theory.

These people are absolute wackjobs.

Pierre Poilievre, multimillionaire landlord, attacks wealthy landlords

Poilievre, the perceived frontrunner in the party’s leadership race, has made housing unaffordability a central part of his campaign so far, and has frequently criticized what he calls the “gatekeepers” keeping homes out of reach for home-buying hopefuls.

At the same time, the 42-year-old Conservative politician – who has drawn a six-figure public salary since he was 25 years old – co-owns a Calgary-area rental property through a real estate venture called Liberty West Properties Inc.

CPC attempts to paint themselves as the "working people's party" are laughable.

Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles used provocative language to describe Premier Doug Ford’s recent scandals and dared him to take her to court if he disagrees. Standing outside the Ontario Legislative Chamber, Stiles called the premier “corrupt” and claimed the premier is preoccupied with making government-funded deals “that only benefit his insider friends.” “This is a corrupt government,” Stiles charged. “This is a corrupt premier.” Stiles pointed to the recent Greenbelt scandal, which saw 7,400 acres of protected land opened for development in 2022, primarily benefitting developers who were suspected of having insider access to the government. [...]

So this is a power move because when you call a politician "corrupt" in the legislature, you're legally immune from being sued for defamation; but if you say outside, you're actually vulnerable to a civil suit, so basically Marit Stiles is daring Doug Ford to sue her because she thinsk (probably correctly) that the case that the premier is corrupt is so strong that she doesn't need to worry about it.

Is this only an Ontario thing or is it nation wide

As far as I know, it's universal in parliamentary democracies.

I hope and pray the Fords are stupid enough to sue. A judicial inquiry into whether or not they're corrupt would be delicious.

“This is a long-awaited victory for workers’ bargaining rights in Canada,” said CUPE’s National President Mark Hancock. “And let’s not forget, this is what happens when the  NDP - backed by the labour movement - put the rights of workers front and centre in the House of Commons. Let’s also not forget that Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has voted against anti-scab legislation not once, not twice, but eight times in the past. The Conservatives only voted for it this time because they knew better than to pick a fight with the labour movement as we approach the next election.”
Currently, employers are able to hire scabs in order to break the morale and bank accounts of striking and locked out workers, as is the case with members of CUPE 2614 at the Port of Quebec, who have been locked out and replaced with scabs since September 2022.
Employers also use scab labour to ship jobs out of the country, as is the case with members of CUPE 2815 who have been locked out from their jobs at Videotron in Gatineau, Quebec since October 2023. While these workers have gone seven months without a paycheque, Videotron is able to continue business as usual, while paying bottom-dollar to ship jobs out of the country.
Anti-scab legislation will make all of this illegal. Employers will no longer be allowed to hire replacement workers (scabs) during strikes and lockouts, thereby balancing the scales and giving more power back to workers to fight for better wages and a better life. [...]

New figures show the Manitoba Progressive Conservatives finished last year with $1.2 million in debt and other liabilities. The number, outlined in filings with Elections Manitoba, is roughly five times what was racked up by the New Democrats, who swept to power in the Oct. 3 election. The Tories spent roughly $1 million more than the NDP last year, with much of the money going to salaries, polling and advertising.

This IS BEYOND unacceptable -FU to Doug Ford and ANY politician/public figure in the Ontario Legislature who agrees with this. A keffiyeh is a traditional scarf worn by many Arab people, and people in West Asian communities. It does represent/symbolize Palestinian resistance and solidarity (among many aspects, of course), but that's not a crime -and trying to censure someone's right to wear traditional garments because you'd rather pander to zionists (as this article notes, many wear religious wear every day in office), is the real issue here -this is discrimination. This is legislated discrimination and is hateful.

"In a historic “first-of-its-kind” agreement the government of British Colombia has acknowledged the aboriginal ownership of 200 islands off the west coast of Canada.

The owners are the Haida nation, and rather than the Canadian government giving something to a First Nation, the agreement admits that the “Xhaaidlagha Gwaayaai” or the “islands at the end of world,” always belonged to them, a subtle yet powerful difference in the wording of First Nations negotiating.

BC Premier David Eby called the treaty “long overdue” and once signed, will clear the way for half a million hectares (1.3 million acres) of land to be managed by the Haida.

Postal service, shipping lanes, school and community services, private property rights, and local government jurisdiction, will all be unaffected by the agreement, which will essentially outline that the Haida decide what to do with the 200 or so islands and islets.

“We could be facing each other in a courtroom, we could have been fighting each other for years and years, but we chose a different path,” said Minister of Indigenous Relations of BC, Murray Rankin at the signing ceremony, who added that it took creativity and courage to “create a better world for our children.”

Indeed, making the agreement outside the courts of the formal treaty process reflects a vastly different way of negotiating than has been the norm for Canada.

“This agreement won’t only raise all boats here on Haida Gwaii – increase opportunity and prosperity for the Haida people and for the whole community and for the whole province – but it will also be an example and another way for nations – not just in British Columbia, but right across Canada – to have their title recognized,” said Eby.

In other words, by deciding this outside court, Eby and the province of BC hope to set a new standard for how such land title agreements are struck."

Press release by the Haida Nation about the vote

Two really great things about this:

1- they didn't have to go to court. Cases like this usually take years or decades and are incredibly expensive for First Nations, even if they win.

2- to quote the press release: "In the agreement, British Columbia recognizes and affirms that the Haida Nation has Aboriginal title to the lands of Haida Gwaii. This recognition does not create title – Haida Title is inherent." That's a big deal!! The difference between Canada granting title versus recognising Aboriginal title is incredibly important in matters of sovereignty. Haida sovereignty and Aboriginal title is inherent; it does not need to be "given" by the Canadian government.

Loblaws Is Fighting A Small Toronto Artist Over His “Roblaws” Logo’d T-Shirts

Meanwhile, Pierre Polievre's senior advisor is still trying to spin her getting lobbyist money from Galen Weston of Loblaws. Jenni Byrne (P. Poilievre’s advisor) is "getting paid a BOAT LOAD of cash to lobby for Loblaws while PeePee kept that a secret. Loblaws and Galen Weston are HUGE conservative supporters and donors because they run interference for Galen while he fists you for chicken and frozen waffles."

Yes, it’s real.

Saskatoon cops are racist towards Indigenous people, and this racism kills.

Saskatchewan is not the only province with “starlight tours” on record either. Vancouver police have done the same, dropping people off on Kitsilano Beach. Winnipeg police were found to have killed at least 76 people this way from a study back in 2010.

This is circulating again.

Just a reminder that this is still happening in Canada.

A top city official facing assault charges was flagged almost a decade ago as a person with allegedly violent tendencies, CBC News has learned.
Marcel Marcellin’s former employer, the London police department, was told about abuse allegations concerning Marcellin but no formal charges were brought against the officer because the complainant was scared of retribution, court documents show.
Marcellin was reported to the police professional standards branch in 2009 but the former head of that department, Det. Insp. Kevin Heslop, says he doesn’t remember the investigation against the officer. Heslop is now retired.
Marcellin became an officer with the London police in 1995. He was promoted to sergeant in 2011 and in the same year became the department’s diversity officer.
He was with London police until his resignation in 2016. London police told CBC News they cannot comment on the matter.

This open letter has been cosigned by Pride Toronto, The 519, The Executive Director of the Alliance for South Asian AIDS Prevention, The Executive Director of the Black Coalition for Aids Prevention, Executive Director of the Toronto People with Aids Foundation, Executive Director of the Sherbourne Health Centre.

They cite the Toronto Police’s failure to protect the LGBTQ community from a serial killer, Bruce Mcarthur (who preyed on Gay men and specifically gay men of colour) as a reason along with a string of other disappearances in the Toronto LGBTQ community.

If anyone can provide a transcript of this, or knows where a text version exists, please let me know. I’m a bit short on time at the moment.

Doug Ford is touting the great myth of the anti-tax crusaders, a seductive story that simply isn’t true.
The new Ontario Progressive Conservative leader says if elected premier he will deliver billions of dollars in tax cuts. He will tackle the province’s debt. And he will do all this mostly by weeding out government waste.
Ford is promising a free lunch. Yet experience, including Ford’s own political past, dictates there is no such thing. There will be costs. And while we cannot be sure of exactly what form they will take, we can be confident they will be high and cruel.

Lindsay Shepherd, who gained nation-wide attention for her victorious battle against administrators at Wilfrid Laurier University, is back in the news cycle. This time she’s inviting a white nationalist to speak on the university’s campus.
The invitation was made on behalf of The Laurier Society for Open Inquiry, a group Shepherd co-founded, as the first date in their “Unpopular Opinions Speaker Series.” The speaker, Faith Goldy, is a self-described “Catholic Nationalist for Christ the King & Country” who was fired from the far-right outlet Rebel Media by Ezra Levant in August 2017 for going “too far.” Her violation was appearing as a guest on a neo-Nazi podcast in Charlottesville on the weekend a white supremacist killed one protester and injured at least 19 others.
In December 2017, Goldy appeared on an alt-right podcast, and said the 14 Words (“We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children,”) a popular slogan for white supremacists.
Among other noxious views, Goldy has called for a new crusade against Muslims, supports ethno-nationalism and bemoans “white genocide.”
The outcry against Goldy’s upcoming appearance led Laurier to make a public statement. Rather than preventing the speech from taking place on their campus, or even condemning Goldy’s ideas, the university said they will provide an “environment for respectful debate and [encourage] members of the university community to allow these debates to take place in a manner that is free of disruption.”
In other words, Laurier will allow their platform to be used by a white nationalist, helping to normalize her viewpoints with whatever legitimacy the institution has left.

Nanaimo’s tent city claimed a small victory on Monday night as municipal politicians agreed to a number of initiatives, including funding for a day-time drop-in centre, that will help the homeless population and those struggling with addiction.
In a rare show of unity, Nanaimo councillors unanimously supported $350,465 in funding, the bulk of which will support a drop-in centre where people living on the street can shower, do laundry or cook. The funding will also pay for enhanced daytime security in the city’s downtown, clean-up teams and additional portable toilets and needle disposal boxes.

What kind of bizarro universe are we in that Doug Ford won the leadership of the Conservative Part of Ontario and is very likely to be Premier of Ontario? My British relatives have been shamefaced since Brexit and now they're making fun of me.

The kind of world that Canadians believe they’re a shiny beacon in the world where right wing populism and extremism doesn’t apparently exist. It does, and its always existed. Doug Ford is a reflection of that. So is Jason Kenney. So is Stephen Harper.

The only people surprised haven’t been paying attention to their own country.

Donald Trump didn’t start in a vacuum, and neither did Doug Ford.

And this is why Canadians dismissing serious social and economic issues in this country because ‘at least we’re not the USA’ is so dangerous. It allows demagogues like Doug Ford to spring up with little opposition.

I never saw Stephen Harper as a populist? I’m really curious about why you think that!

I mean, I never liked his politics, but I see Trudeau as more of a populist than Harper.

Here’s a research article on Stephen Harper:

Quote:

“In my view, the Harper-led Conservatives were populist. The Harper government’s anti-liberal democratic reforms – stifling dissenting voices within his party and the civil service, removing the independence of the elections monitor, centralising power in the prime minister’s office and infringing on the rights of minorities – all highlight an anti-pluralist tendency, supported by a divisive ‘us versus them’ rhetoric.

A look back at the past year alone highlights how fear – designed to divide ‘good’ Canadians (or ‘old-stock Canadians’ as Harper controversially called them) from a conflated group of terrorists, jihadists and Muslims – was the driving force behind a number of Stephen Harper’s key government policies.”
