Normalize going into people’s ask boxes and ask them random ass questions.

Tumblr used to be so much fun with all the asks (anonymous or otherwise), and we need to bring those back, especially now that we finally have a half-decent blocking feature in place.

Ask people things! Message them! Don’t let tumblr inbox die! It’s one of the features that made tumblr tumblr.

I may not get very many notes on my posts, but I get a decent number of Asks from both Followers and Anons fairly regularly, and I've learned to value that far more than silent Likes.

It's always a nice feeling to know someone cares enough to drop you a line, even about the most random stuff.

You know, an interesting tumblr transformation that's happened gradually, and which I've seen no one talk about: ask-culture has essentially dropped off to nothing.

By which I mean, asks used to be WAY more of the tumblr economy. They used to be more common to send, and receive, and see. They were integral to the collaborative, forum-like behavior of old tumblr communities, not even to speak on the HUGE number of ask-blogs that used to exist to only be interacted with in ask-form.

I'm not saying this in a vying-for-attention way but instead in an observational way: I used to get way way more asks in like 2015, even with a fraction of my follower count. I wonder if it's due to the homogenization of social media sites? There's a lot more of this divide between "content creator" and "consumer" instead of just a bunch of peer blogs who would talk to each other. "Asks" aren't really a thing on twitter, are they? And as I understand it, the closest thing to an "ask" on instagram or tiktok would be a creator screenshotting some comment and responding to it in a new reel or video or whatever those content mediums are. Are asks just too tumblr-specific? Is that aspect of the site culture dying out as more and more people converge to using all their social media sites in the same way?

after reblogging an "ask game" post, i used to get multiple asks! it's a bit harder of a sell now, even with pre-written questions. i think people have this idea that showing up in someone's ask box when you don't know them is crossing some kind of boundary? sending an unsolicited dm?

but it's not. most people have their ask open because they like getting asks! yes, even from strangers! ask me stuff! ask about a post i reblogged, or a project i'm working on!

I never had people draw fanart for one of my fics or write something based on it, but I just know that that is such a high honor and show of love. I once had someone ask me if they could translate my fic in Chinese and I was like, wow, they love it enough to want to put time and effort into it to show it to more people.

To all writers, you can use this post to let people know that you would be delighted to receive fanart and would love if they get creative with what you created.

when ao3 is back up i want all of you to leave comments on the fics you were interrupted from reading, the fics you were looking to find, the fics you were thinking about re-reading, and the fics left open in your tabs for months now.

when ao3 is back up, i want you all to show some love to your favourite writers, favourite fics, or even just the 600 word one-shot that brought a smile to your face that tuesday three weeks ago.

when ao3 is back up i want you all to remember that comments and explicitly voiced appreciation are what keep writers going.

reminder since we're gettin another wave of bots:

if you don't distinguish yourself from a bot, just any sorta indication that a human made the blog, like a funny pfp or description, or even a disclaimer that you're a lurker, then you're almost certainly gonna be blocked n reported for spam when you follow people

Having a good URL is no longer an excuse. We shoot on sight, it's up to you to warn us you're real.

With the bots liking posts and even SENDING ASKS as I've had that happen, this is VERY MUCH NECESSARY NOW-

ao3 is not instagram, and it’s not embarrassing to comment on a story that’s old. we understand that you just happened to come across it now; writing is magical in that you often come across the right story at just the time you need to read it.

also, authors will literally cry over their keyboard if you comment on the stuff they write.
