I always think about how Jaime’s name is “James/Jacob” meaning “he who supplants”, which was probably George’s #epic surface level naming of the character from the original outline that ends up usurping the throne by killing everyone. Then it changed into something more abstract like the Jacob/Esau parallel that many read into JC. “He who holds the heel” or “he who supplants” with Jacob being born second holding his twin’s, Esau’s, heel, which parallels what happens with Jaime and Cersei during their birth, where he is born second holding her foot. As stated in one of @nobodysuspectsthebutterfly’s older posts the concept of the usurpation changed to that of usurping birthright by just being born in a society with male primogeniture. With both of the twins playing the role of Esau and Jacob simultaneously, as Jaime steals Cersei’s birthright by being born a man, and she steals his by convincing him to join the Kingsguard and give up all his lands and titles for her love. Then, ofc, the kingslaying/usurpation layer is still there in other ways. Also it being the alternative spelling of Jamie with “J’aime”, which is “I love” in french. It is just so good with much of the core of his character being “the things I do for love” and the examination of love as something beyond just good and evil that is self destructive, selfish, violent, beautiful, altruistic, and redeeming— like this concoction of contradictions. Without love he would not have crippled an innocent child. Without love he wouldn’t have saved Brienne from the bear. His love is prejudice. His love is altruism. Then his moniker of kingslayer covering up his true name representing that facade for both the reader and himself, which transforms as he thinks “Jaime. My name is Jaime.” during his symbolic rebirth in the bath. If a lot of this is not intentional idgaf like I’m projecting this shit onto the text anyway george buddy
