Wands: Pros and Cons

Wands. Used in a witch’s practice as a symbol of air or fire and is used to direct energy in spell work.

I’ve had a lot of trouble figuring out what kind of wand I want to work with. Many witches suggest wooden wands but I can’t stand the texture of wood and it doesn’t feel like the right kind of energy for me. So after looking around for alternatives I made a list of different types of wands and my personal pros and cons for each. Get ready, this is gonna get long.

REMEMBER: This all depends on the kind of practice you’re doing, you don’t need a wand. And you certainly don’t need an expensive one.

Wooden Stick

Pros:

  • Traditional
  • Lightweight
  • Can be made yourself and easily customised
  • Energy can be specific to the tree it’s from

Cons:

  • Flammable
  • Vulnerable to water damage
  • Texture is yucky
  • Also a bit boring

Crystal

Pros:

  • Energy is specific to the crystal
  • Good for healing magic

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • Vulnerable to light/water damage
  • can be fragile

Iron

Pros:

  • Protective energy
  • Fireproof
  • Fae proof
  • Spirit proof
  • Customisable

Cons:

  • Expensive (if you looking for a “wand” specifically)
  • Vulnerable to water damage
  • Can be heavy

Glass

Pros:

  • Lightweight
  • Very pretty
  • Good for light/apollonian magic
  • Can come in different colours

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • Fragile
  • Vulnerable to heat damage

Chopsticks

Pros:

  • Cheap
  • Lightweight
  • Often comes with fun designs

Cons:

  • Easily snapped
  • Could be mistaken for trash
  • Disposable ones are unfinished and vulnerable to water damage

Wooden Spoons

Pros:

  • A kitchen witch staple
  • Cheap
  • Can be customised

Cons:

  • Texture is yucky
  • Vulnerable to water damage
  • Flammable

Pens/Pencils/Paintbrushes

Pros:

  • Can be kept hidden
  • Good for art magic
  • Lightweight
  • Cheap

Cons:

  • Easily lost
  • Easily damages
  • Cheap tools are cheap for a reason

Bone

Pros:

  • Good for earth/death magic
  • Good for animal magic (in some respects)
  • Energy specific to the animal it came from

Cons:

  • Will have to be carefully treated and sanitised if found yourself
  • Not vegetarian/vegan
  • Consent to take and use said bone has to be serious and precise

Or you could just use your fingers.

Hope this help anyone who may have a similar problem looking for their own wand. If I missed any feel free to include your own in a RB or as a comment.
