oh baby u have GOT to be kidding me...

i did NOT become a magician to do matrix math >:(

Babes it's cool. Taking it literally, it's a basic visual metaphor for the classic elements and the 3 signs that represent each, sometimes called a triplicity. The curly brackets are probably just a pretty way of grouping them together to be read as one thing like braces in a music score.

So fiery (fire) signs are Aries, Leo, Saggitarius

Airy (air) signs are Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

Earthy (earth) signs are Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

And watry (water) signs are Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

Super basic info just written in a different way from what we're used to reading. Also lot of old occult books do fancy looking things for the sake of the aesthetic. Don't over think it.

Just wanted to share this because it needs to be repeated:

The power comes from you, not the objects around you. Which means you don't need all those specific tools or ingredients -If you want to, you can but it's not a necessity.

So don't waste your money on specific mystical/esoteric shops, be smart with your purchases and get creative:

Use playing cards for divination, find trinkets and spell jars in charity shops, take parts from things, steal from big corporations.

Remember that old witches used what they had, so whenever you see some elitists bs saying your herbs need to come from a local provider, you can't be a witch unless you do/have these specific things, or you need that one specific crystal that costs £15 or else the spell won't work, tell them to stuff it.

The power comes from you.

Wands: Pros and Cons

Wands. Used in a witch’s practice as a symbol of air or fire and is used to direct energy in spell work.

I’ve had a lot of trouble figuring out what kind of wand I want to work with. Many witches suggest wooden wands but I can’t stand the texture of wood and it doesn’t feel like the right kind of energy for me. So after looking around for alternatives I made a list of different types of wands and my personal pros and cons for each. Get ready, this is gonna get long.

REMEMBER: This all depends on the kind of practice you’re doing, you don’t need a wand. And you certainly don’t need an expensive one.

Wooden Stick

Pros:

  • Traditional
  • Lightweight
  • Can be made yourself and easily customised
  • Energy can be specific to the tree it’s from

Cons:

  • Flammable
  • Vulnerable to water damage
  • Texture is yucky
  • Also a bit boring

Crystal

Pros:

  • Energy is specific to the crystal
  • Good for healing magic

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • Vulnerable to light/water damage
  • can be fragile

Iron

Pros:

  • Protective energy
  • Fireproof
  • Fae proof
  • Spirit proof
  • Customisable

Cons:

  • Expensive (if you looking for a “wand” specifically)
  • Vulnerable to water damage
  • Can be heavy

Glass

Pros:

  • Lightweight
  • Very pretty
  • Good for light/apollonian magic
  • Can come in different colours

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • Fragile
  • Vulnerable to heat damage

Chopsticks

Pros:

  • Cheap
  • Lightweight
  • Often comes with fun designs

Cons:

  • Easily snapped
  • Could be mistaken for trash
  • Disposable ones are unfinished and vulnerable to water damage

Wooden Spoons

Pros:

  • A kitchen witch staple
  • Cheap
  • Can be customised

Cons:

  • Texture is yucky
  • Vulnerable to water damage
  • Flammable

Pens/Pencils/Paintbrushes

Pros:

  • Can be kept hidden
  • Good for art magic
  • Lightweight
  • Cheap

Cons:

  • Easily lost
  • Easily damages
  • Cheap tools are cheap for a reason

Bone

Pros:

  • Good for earth/death magic
  • Good for animal magic (in some respects)
  • Energy specific to the animal it came from

Cons:

  • Will have to be carefully treated and sanitised if found yourself
  • Not vegetarian/vegan
  • Consent to take and use said bone has to be serious and precise

Or you could just use your fingers.

Hope this help anyone who may have a similar problem looking for their own wand. If I missed any feel free to include your own in a RB or as a comment.

Witch Confession:

I technically never was a baby witch.

Being raised by pagan parents meant that a lot of this stuff was already second nature to me. So when I finished my GCSEs and was able to start my own path it felt weird and nostalgic, and that was only 3 years ago.

Anyone else had this when they started?

Making an Altar Master Post

Considering making an altar but don’t know where to start? This long-ass post should cover all the bases of altar building for those of you who are interested but stuck. This post is pretty vague on purpose, altars are an interesting grey area of this practice. When you build an altar you can’t really go wrong, it’s something for you to take control of and decide for yourself.

📖This is all taken from my grimoire so feel free to add any info of your own in a rb or in the comments.📖

🌻What is an altar?🌻

Altars are a magical work space for any witch/pagan/wiccan/other.

Historically altars and shrines were built all over the world in different cultures to house offerings and worship the gods/spirits/ancestors.

The difference between an altar and shrine can depend on the culture you’re looking at but generally an altar is both a work space and a place of worship and a shrine is solely a place of worship (the Theatron of Athens was an altar as it served as a place to house offerings and a communal performance space).

Modern day altars however are more private and unique to the practitioner/s. Altars and shrines can now be created using anything and include many different types.

There are many ways to think outside the box with altar building but don’t think you have to make one just because every other witch does.

🌻Types of altars🌻 (not an inclusive list)

- Home/family altar🏠: This serves as the energy centre of the home that is shared by the entire family. It can be simplistic, change with the seasons, and feature something representing each family member. (this is one that my dad built that lives in our kitchen).

- Personal altar: This altar is usually only connected to 1 or 2 people and kept separate from the rest of the family in a bedroom/box/draw. It can be put anywhere and be of any size (mine used to be on a shelf in my wardrobe and now it sits on the window) This altar is very personal to the practitioner often representing their passions and/or their patron. (this is my own to Dionysus and Apollo but it also includes my desk and bookshelf next to it since the window is so small).

- Working Altar: This altar is very practical. It’s only taken out when it’s needed for spells/rituals and is unique to the spell and it’s intention. If you want this type of altar then when you build it think carefully of what corresponds to the outcome you wish for.

- Shrine: (a form of altar to some, completely separate to other but I’m including it just in case). Created to honour a specific deity/creature/spirit. This is used to house offerings and pray.

-Travel/mini altar: Often stored away in a box/tin. Travel/mini altars can consist of small trinkets to carry around when you’re away from your larger altar or have to conceal your magic (it’s great for witches in the broom closet but depending on the size it could go missing).

- Image altar📷: Less traditional but very creative. An image altar could be a collection of images on Photoshop (for techies), a collage of pictures on a wall or board, or even a drawing of an altar (It’s personal, inconspicuous and it doesn’t matter if you can draw or not). I made this one in my sketchbook using pencil, ink and watercolour.

- Love/self care altar❤: This altar is fully dedicated to self care, loving yourself, or introspection. It includes things that have a lot of meaning to you and make you happy when you’re down (I have one by my bedside and use it when I feel shitty, I also use this space to contact my spirit guide).

🌻Supplies🌻 (again not an inclusive list)

These are some general supplies to have for an altar but this doesn't mean that anything is 100% necessary.

- A flat surface: This can be anywhere with enough space to display everything.

- A cloth: Not just to protect the surface or fragile objects, it can be a sign of respect to your patron.

- Incense/oil diffuser: To smell nice and can be used to cleanse the space.

- Candles: Decoration, to represent fire or your patron, for candle magic, and meditation.

- Bowl/dish: To hold any offerings.

- Cup/chalice/bottles: For drink offerings, to represent water, to hold water for a spell.

- Matches/lighters: If you include candles.

- Crystals/stones: Decoration, could also be elemental/seasonal/represent the chakra.

- Wand/athame: Can be used to direct energy in a spell.

- Bell: To represent air, to call spirits/your patron.

- Mortar & Pestle: To grind up any ingredients in a spell.

🌻Building an Altar🌻

This is part is going to be a simple guide to building a personal altar (I will be using my own preference for deities as an example but you don’t have to).

1- Find a space: Think about where you want to work and consider the energy you get from different spaces (also consider any pets and fragile objects).

2- Find a surface: This can be as big as you like. I’ll be using my art desk as an example, I took everything off it and cleaned it before I did anything else.

3- Get a cloth: Fabric from a craft shop or an old scarf/veil are perfect and come in any available colour and size. In terms of colour you can chose one of your favourites, something seasonal or something to represent your patron.

4- Set your intention: Now this is the time to decide what your altar is going to be used for. You can pick a centre piece that reflects this.

I wanted to connect with the gods so I made the centre of the altar about myself and my deities go on either side. The centre piece I chose is a picture of a fairy scene I’ve had for a very long time.

5- Candles: The next thing to put down are candles (or any source of light). The light acts as the switch to turn on your altar and give light to any patron for when you want to communicate.

6- Tools: If you want to include any tools from the previous list then now is the time to chose where you want to put them (I included a cup of water, an incense holder, a bell, and a wand).

7- Decoration: Next is to add any personal decoration that can go wherever you like. I put mine in the centre piece.

8- (OPTIONAL) Representing patrons: This step is optional because it isn’t necessary to have a patron in your practice.

Because of the intention I decided on in step 4, I places the decoration representing my patrons on either side of my altar (btw these photos were before I switched from Aphrodite to Apollo so I apologies for the inconsistency).

I left a large space empty to use for when i’m writing in my grimoire, performing a spell or doing a tarot reading. I didn’t include this in my real altar because it’s a decorative section.

🌻Tips🌻

- There are templates that you can follow if you really want to. They’re usually for a large traditional elemental altar though (I personally don’t recommend them because it’s boring and not very creative).

- An altar can be as big or as small as you like and you have no rules or expectations and it doesn’t have to be just one surface.

- If you want an altar for a spirit/deity/fae as well as their respective candle, you could include a candle for yourself to represent your own spirit to stay connected with them.

- An altar is a very subjective thing, if it’s personal it should change with your interests (like from light and fire the first year to sea and sand the next year).

Tea With Your Spirit Guide

To open your life to your spirit guide and invite them inside to spend time with them and connect with a late night cup of tea.

What you need

  • A space for both of you to drink in.
  • 2 white candles
  • A Bell
  • 2 cups of tea (any kind)
  • Pen and notebook
  • (optional) A white/grey cloth
  • (optional) Stones symbolic of divination, clarity, meditation, or friendship
  • (optional) Feathers symbolic of spirits (can be real or fake)

Method

Pick the space you want to use. The day of the session you should let in some fresh air, clean and cleanse the space of any excess energies.

At night. Place the cloth down on the table and decorate the table with the feathers and stones.

Light your 2 candles, 1 on the table between where you and your spirit guide will sit, and the other infront of the window. Make your cups of tea and set them on the table.

Take the bell to the window and ring it and say:

“spirit guide, I invite you tonight to join me for a drink”

Ring the bell again and make your way to the table.

Get comfortable, grab your drink and close your eyes while you sip it. Allow any thoughts and images to cross your mind (even the weird ones).

When you finish your drink set down the cup and open your eyes.

To end the session say thank you and blow out the candle.

Before you go to bed, write down what you saw, and how you felt during the session and read it back in the morning.

Sunset Healing Spell

This simple healing spell is for you to use after a long, stressful week (inspired by a very stressful week I was having at college). The preparation of this spell is long so make sure you’re able to set a day aside that wont interfere with your work/school.

What you need

  • A new bar of soap
  • A white/blue candle
  • A bowl of water
  • A towel

(if you want to get creative find/make a calming sigil and carve it into your soap)

Method

First of all take the day off. Spend it relaxing at home, catching up on tv, doing things that keep you in a good mood.

During that day set aside at least 30 minutes to meditate and reflect on why this week has troubled you and then carry on as normal.

At sunset gather your things and take them to a window (preferably a window where you can see the sun) and put on some relaxing music.

Place your candle between you and the window and light it.

Look at the flame and take this breathing exercise 3 times:

Breathe in for 4 second, Hold for 4 seconds, and out for 4 seconds.

Then looking at the sun say this phrase 3 times:

"As the sun falls, my fears shall follow”

Lastly was your hands with the soap and water to wipe away your stress and blow out the candle.

If you want, you can end the day with a nice hot bath.

Made myself a personal altar by my bedside.💖

This altar is meant for calming my anxiety and cheering me up when my arthritis hits me. I filled it with a lot of things I like 🌻 (except anything axolotl but I'm working on that).

Personal altars are also called self love/self care altar and they're really fun to make. You can use a personal altar for love and healing spells or to just be a reminder to love yourself.😙

Witch tip!

"How do I know when things should be cleansed?"

An object should generally be cleansed before or after you use it in a spell/ritual or if you've just been using the object a lot.

There is also a method to check incase you're unsure about it.

Sleep with it.🌒

Sleep with the object by your pillow and record your dreams from that night.

If the dream was negative then it may need cleansing.

Random Witchy and non-witchy self care tips

- You come first, education comes second.

- Soak up the sunlight, it’s warm, it’s cleansing, and good for your hair.

- Set a side at least 1 hour each week to keep your room clean.

- Keep jade on your bed when you’re not using it. Jade is an emotional healer. Keeping it on your bed will help you heal after a bad day.

- Also try a jade roller or rub a tumble stone on your face, it’s very cooling.

- Have a bottle of water with you if you’re out all day so you have something to drink when you feel thirsty and you won’t waste money.

- Meditate around the colours/stones representing what you want in your life. The same goes for eating food: “you are what you eat”

- Ladies! change your sheets when you finish your cycle even if they don’t look dirty.

- Make your showers into a full body cleansing ritual.

- Eat two different fruits per day (eg: a banana in the morning and an apple when you come home)

- If anyone is disrespectful, gives you attitude, or acts like a child towards you DO NOT STAND  FOR IT! If they act like a 5 year old then treat them as such.

- Remember the gods are with you. if you can’t speak to anyone about your problems speak to them, they love you and want you be ok.
