A second Diavolo edit has hit the account
'studying politics will make you appreciate other perspectives' 'studying politics will show you why things have to be certain ways'
No dumbass studying politics just makes me hate West Germany
*Same anon*
This makes alot more sense, thank you so much for clarifying. I also get why you would be so frustrated.
I wish i could say more, but you have some very strong points, so theres not much else for me to say!
(Mention of rape)
I guess I have one point Ill add, another reason I think people gloss over the gruesome murders that happened to the rest of the cast is because graphic injuries and death like that are in so much media we are essentially desensitized to it in writing. While on the other hand, Anyas rape is one of the few depictions that would not be considered shock value. So that's why it comes to people's mind first(including my own at first) to what Jimmy's "worst" crime in mouthwashing would be. And the desensitization of death like that is a whole conversation all of its own.
Anon makes great point here. does an abundance of death and shock in horror make horror less effective as a genre? interesting stuff!
I'm really confused about your post, the phrasing "you are thinking like Jimmy" doesn't make sense. Jimmy doesn't think he did anything wrong to Anya. He's dismissive, annoyed, and only thinks about himself and how to get out of that situation. He doesn't think what he did to Anya was the worst thing he did. He feels INTENSE guilt over what he did to Curly, and the fates of Daisuke and Swansea. He only """takes responsibility"""(not really) after everyone dies because he feels guilty over their deaths, nothing about what he did to Anya before that.
(TW: discussion of rape)
I am 100% not claiming that people are thinking like Jimmy in a misogynist sense (to be completely clear, I wrote that post while a little annoyed, so it probably comes off not great). What I’m saying is that, even at the end of the game, when Jimmy tells himself he is taking responsibility by ‘sacrificing himself’, he remains so wrapped up in this aesthetic concern for morality rather than anything real. He isn’t helping anyone, it’s 20 extra years time that will probably accomplish nothing. The man literally just murdered Swansea. And while it is harsh wording to say the interpretation of the game as being ‘about’ anya’s rape or focused on it is the same kind of thinking, I do think it is related. Jimmy functionally killed 4 people and tortured one of them for months, but when people ask ‘what did he do wrong’, people often answer with ‘what he did to anya’. One of these actions is almost undeniably worse than the other, but the latter gets more attention because it’s more grotesque, especially to a progressive fanbase (note: this is generally a good thing). To me, this is showing the same kind of thinking Jimmy gets himself wrapped up in. ‘What appears the worst is the worst’ is not a good way of analysing art, especially horror with progressive themes. And besides, I think basically everything said on the topic has already been said. I find it absolutely fascinating how real life victims of SA pick up on Anya’s character so easily compared to people who aren’t victims, that’s halfway worthy of academic study. But I’m worried that the fanbase is going to forever be re-litigating the same subject while I’ve never heard anyone touch on Swansea’s absolutely amazingly written speech, or POLLE’s incredible multi-layered symbolism. By all means, Anya’s relationship to her victimhood is a really good part of this game, but it isn’t the only good part. Don’t miss the real horrors of jimmy’s actions all together for the grotesque-ness of only one, just because it’s the most viscerally unpleasant to many of us.
Hopefully that can explain the post. Again, I was a little frustrated when writing it.
If you answer the question of 'in the game mouthwashing, what is the worst thing the character Jimmy has done' with what he did to Anya specifically, you are thinking like Jimmy. You are more concerned with the aesthetic qualities of immorality than any of its actual effects on people.
Very normal things are happening in my life

Im going to have an aneurysm the next time i hear an actual political academic say that reflections on the french revolution was 'proven right' because the revolution 'went wrong' in some nebulous undefined way. like what the fuck do you even mean you have to elaborate. seriously are you actually proposing a foundational text of 19TH AND 20TH CENTURY CONSERVATISM is in someway verifiably correct. what is going ON why have i seen this more than once.
Brother made this. I could give context, and i choose not to.

The thing is, Robespierre's actual position on the left don't matter that much - sorry Billaud. (Also it's your own fault, Billaud.) Robespierre was not that far on the left, we know that, and many leftists never forgave him for attacking the Enragés and the Hébertistes or his personal dislike of Marat. But that's not the only thing that matters. Thermidor changes everything. The Butterfly Effect on changing Thermidor affects history in ways that can't be imagined. Without Thermidor, the entire history of the left is changed in ways that are hard to comprehend, but let's try.
Thermidor haunts the thoughts AND actions of the Russian Revolutionaries. They fear it. They try to prevent one of their own. If it doesn't exist, what do they fear? Can there even be a revolution in Russia in 1917? You need a revolutionary avant-garde who's read Marx. That doesn't happen without the Utopian Socialists of the early 19thc (who Marx answers to and argues with). There's no theorizing on insurrectionism without Blanqui and without Babeuf. And there's no Babouviste coup without Thermidor.
Thermidor also becomes a part in creating and shaping the left as it is today. The left would be completely different without Thermidor happening as it did.
