dat furry tail! dat belly! spotting animals in their natural habitat always triggers a childlike amazement in me. i could watch them for hours - and yeah, i'm still fascinated even by the ubiquitous squirrels. last weekend i went on a night walk through our neighborhood (sans camera) and spotted a young deer munching away some chestnuts right next to a racoon  (it's not like we live in the densely populated bay area or anything. well, the california wildlife obviously didn't get the memo). i watched the inter-species friends for about 10 minutes from like 15 feet away, they did not seem to mind - and i felt like a disney princess in a magic forest =D. y'all can come to me you furry/feathery/fluffy/fierce little rascals!

after seeing so many beautiful wild animals in yellowstone/the grand tetons all we wished for was to add the legendary moose to this list...

so we kept chanting silly moose-songs every time we were on our own. this is also why we ran up the cascade canyon trail like crazy persons on our last day, despite the pouring rain...we heard people saw moose up here.

but the rain got so bad on this final hike that we were forced to sit out the passing shower under a thick grove of trees. cowering up against a tree we just started looking through the pictures i took that day to kill some time, when we heard the sound of branches cracking. startled we looked up - and guess what?

a moose momma and her young were staring right back at us - from 3 yards away! they obviously had the same idea to hide from the rain in this perfect den.

oh oh. we wanted moose, but not THAT close. especially moose mamas are known to be very protective and unpredictable. so we slowly noped right out of there - and so did the lil moose family.

when we were in a safe distance we burst into uncontrollable laughter and i finally put the camera in my hands to use. the poor-quality-results can be seen here. bangarang! we really got our moose-experience at last. what a magnificent animal!! and what a grand finale for our little trip! i can't believe how lucky we were =D
