Why You Should ‘Make Yourself’ Write (And How To Do It)

Most people who write for a hobby - especially the neurodivergent crowd - will write whenever they’re inspired, and many will be able to get an insane amount of writing done in one go, but then there’s a good while of writer’s block and low motivation/inspiration in between those bursts of creativity. You can see forcing yourself to write as something irrelevant to you; it’s just a hobby, so why burn yourself out forcing yourself to do it until it’s no longer fun?

The reason people say this, even for hobbyists, is so that you have some level of consistent progress; relying on random spikes in creativity or convenient hyperfocus isn’t a sustainable plan when it can either leave you burnt out after or leave you at a creative dead end for weeks or months between actual writing sessions

If you write consistently, you make progress consistently, so it’s good practice to make a habit out of using writing goals to keep you on track. Maybe you work best writing X amount of words, or maybe you prefer to write for X amount of time. Maybe you want to meet this goal every day, or maybe every few days, or maybe every week, or so on. I’m personally on 1000 words per week, and despite my autistic brain that thought I’d never be able to set and keep a consistent goal, I’ve been able to stick to it for nearly six months now. I also know people who are on 10 minutes per day, 100 words per week, 500 words every three days, 5000 words per month, etc

For me, being able to keep track of this not only means I get to see consistent progress being made, but it’s actually been really encouraging to see that word count go up so often and I’ve found that it motivates me to keep up with it. I’ve really enjoyed getting to work on this and having a minimum amount of progress per week really helps me feel like this is something real and something that’s slowly but surely going to be complete soon enough

Give it a try; say to yourself “if I want to achieve this goal, how long do I reasonably need to give myself to do it?” and have a go. After a few cycles it starts to register in your brain that, hey, you’re actually getting something done and being productive and watching that word count going up every day/week/etc! And don’t be afraid to change up your goal and your deadline if you think you’re not being challenged enough or if you’re starting to get burnt out on it - I’d consider it burning out when it’s consistently feeling less like a fun activity and more like a chore you have to do. It should still be fun!

I'm doing an experiment

Edit: Should've added smut. If smut is your top struggle and you want to or do write it, reblog and say so <3

Smut! It's why 2.of my series are currently paused because I can't get myself to write smut.

Shout-out to the writers who create whole lores and universes.

Shout-out to all the writers who try to find the essence of a character. Who work with their characters talents and flaws to create a story that is worth telling.

In these times of fast consuming you don't get the love you deserve.

But I see the work you put into it and I thank you. Thank you for not giving up. Thank you for taking your time.

And I will echo the same thing that others have already beaten me to- you belong on this list as well, @geralts-yenn . Your stories live in my brain and my heart. And I'm always excited to see new tales from you.

And thank you, not only for reading, reblogging and commenting, but for understanding what it feels like to pour your heart and soul into a piece of writing and then constantly doubting your ability to write because you hardly get any kind of feedback. (Apart from likes, which we all know do nothing on here.)

It’s heart-wrenching and made me want to quit more than once. But that’s the beauty of writing for me: I always come back because I love it too much.

The posting here, well, that’s a whole different story. I’m still thinking about quitting that, more often than I think about continuing to do so, to be honest. For what is the point if hardly anyone takes an interest in your work?

So thank you again for this shoutout. A tiny beacon of hope that there are still people around here who care about the writers behind the fics.

Reading your answer almost breaks my heart. 🥺

It's just not fair that someone who is able to create stories like yours has to feel this way. You should be drowned in love and praise for the things you create. And you should never doubt your abilities as a writer. Your stories live in my head and heart ❤️

I really hope that people will get back to comment and reblog more often because I just can't stand the idea of seeing people like you leave. It would be an awful loss for all of us

I will try my best, not only to always give back some love to the authors of the stories I read, but also to make people aware how much impact a reblog and a nice comment can have on a writer.

I have no idea how I had never seen your name before @daydreaming-in-letters. Our fandoms overlap a fair amount. I will rectify my lack of consuming your work as soon as I can.

But also I hear you and I see you. I came to Tumblr specifically because I wanted to interact with readers and other writers, and over the past 2 years I have found it disappointing at best. I pour my soul into what I write and like you I can't seem to quit even when my heart breaks over the lack of interactions.

I hope you do what is best for you, and wish you all the love and attention you deserve. I will do my best to promote your stuff when I get the moment to read, comment and reblog.

And thank you to @geralts-yenn for highlighting writers to bring them to others attention.

to you, it's a shitty sentence. to some random bitch 500 miles away, it's a fire line that'll haunt them for the next 17 years.

you don't know how impactful your writing is because it's been in your brain for far too long now. you've stared at it for hours and repeated "this sucks" over and over again to the point that you killed your capacity to feel anything about your work.

but trust me, once you get your shit out there, someone's gonna go over that paragraph you hate and go "jesus fucking christ" and put the book down to have an existential crisis.

Writing Questions Tag Game!

Belated, but tagged by @darsynia, thanks, hon!!

  • What is your absolute all-time favourite idea you’ve ever had?

As cheesy as it sounds, I will have to say Blinded by the Fog is my all time favorite idea to date. Its a perfect combination of my two current fandoms and where I am in life and in my mental health journey. i was kind of wandering through fanfic until i got the prompt that inspired it - "You are the wife of a soldier who is missing in action and presumed dead. His best friend, who survived the war, offered you comfort and companionship, and over time love blossomed. A year later, you learn that your husband is alive and is coming home. Now you must confess to him that you have moved on—or have you?"- and its all my brain wants to focus on right now. its almost taking over my life, and I'm kind of okay with that. I'm trying to stay away from tropes but at the same time embracing the ones that are part of this story organically. The three main characters really keep surprising me with what happens, and I'm not sure how its going to end to be completely honest even though I have started the Epilogue.

  • Is there a question you’ve been asked in the past that really stands out to you and you still think about sometimes?

"Why are you cockblocking your own characters?" was a question I got from a fellow writer years ago when she read a draft I wrote and was struggling with the smut portion of it. And because of her pushing me, the completed chapter was some of the hottest stuff I've ever written. I still think of that phrase when I'm struggling with my own brain while writing fic, especially sexy times. I have minimal self-assurance that my writing is any good and often need someone else to validate it before I post or even write an idea I have.

  • What is your favourite part of being a writer? What parts could you take or leave?

I love putting what I see in my brain down on paper, to see the story and the dialog play out on paper.

The parts I can take or leave is the self worth i struggle with in regards to my writing (it stems beyond that but the question is about writing). I always need validation from someone else its good, worth posting etc, even though I'm the first person to tell someone else to post their writing. Brains are hard and weird.

Another part I'd like to leave is taht the number of reblogs, comments, kudos, recognition of any kind = my writing's worth. Ugh I hate that feeling.

  • What is your greatest motivation to write/create?

I love writing, i love creating, i love bringing to life the lives of these characters outside the stories we already know about them.

  • What do you wish you knew when you were first starting out writing?

That writing anything and everything will make me a better writer. That everyone sucks when they start anything. That I dont have to be stellar to have people want to read what I'm writing. And that pushing my characters to fit into an outline I wanted them to follow would result in stalled stories, that wouldn't go anywhere. Its how Two Brothers Walk Into A Bar petered out. I tried to force a relationship that neither character wanted and as much as I loved that story it didn't move forward from that point.

  • What is your favourite story you’ve written TO COMPLETION? Link it if you’d like and can!

Days of Our Freakin' Camp is my favorite story that I've written to completion. What started out as a drabble grew grew and grew into this 20 chapter story that took me and the readers for a ride along the way. I didn't plan out how it was going to go, it just happened. and I'm so proud of how it turned out.

  • What is your favourite out-of-the-box quote?

The drugs he had picked up on Whitefall. The ones he was careful to take for fear the others would notice a change in him. Jayne had no choice. He wanted to maintain that he was indeed human and not the monster he had become long before he came to Serenity. The bear reminded him of the human he used to be. Someone with a beating heart who actually felt emotion. Not this cold hearted creature that sat in his bunk, wishing it would all go away.

  • Which of your characters would you say has the most controversial mindset? Why do you say so and how do you personally feel about their ideals?

Merle Dixon was the hardest for me to write, even though I grew up around people like him and have been around folks of the same small minded mind set most of my life. The more i struggle with my own demons to not be a pushover and just let people have their opinions of the world around us, the more difficult it is to write people like Merle.

  • If you, when you first started writing, met you now, what would younger you think?

that I am an amazing writer who needs to have more confidence in myself and my writing.

No pressure tags (but I'd love to see your thoughts)- @adulting-sucks, @ronearoundblindly, @joannaliceevans-fanficblog, @geralts-yenn, @raccoon-eyed-rebel, and @jvanilly and @sarahdonald87 - even though I know you two haven't published anything yet.

President's Day Weekend Writing Party

I get the feeling about half of the people i'm about to tag are not in the US, but gimme another name for this writing party and I'll use it.

How many of us are trying to write this weekend? How many just need that lil push to finish what we are working on? Need the inspiration that can only come from other peoples? need brain storming? Or just want to cheer writers on as they tackle what they are working on?

What are you working on? What are you listening to? What do you need from us?

I am determined to work on my Teacher!Steve fic. It’s been nagging me since August. It’s sweet history teacher Steve and divorcee!MILF!reader. She needs a good man to love on her the way she deserves and we just fucking know that smart, beefy, kind teacher Steve is the man for the job.

I have it all sorted in my head, but can’t get the start right and just keep getting stuck. I need a cheerleader, or just someone to gush over Stevie with me because I keep psyching myself out. Any takers?

Crash away, Darlin. Anyone else in the Stevie/ CE camp? I can not help sad to say. Steve was the least of my favorites before CE started his shenanigans.

Anyone up for Betaing? Let me know, i have a couple chapters that I'd love someone whos not intoxicated to take alook at to insure they make sense to a normal sane person.

k

thanks so much

love

Prompts for couples that aren’t together yet

Here are some sweet prompts I’ve been thinking about recently. The novel I’m working on right now features one of my softest couples ever, and honestly most of these prompts are inspired by them, so you have my beautiful Jamie & Marcel to thank for this.

Save this post so you can come back to the ideas!

💜 Borrowing their love interest’s clothing 💜 Seeing their love interest drenched in the rain 💜 Cooking for their love interest 💜 Setting aside their plans to help out their love interest 💜 Secretly reading their love interest’s favorite book so they can quote it to them later 💜 Remembering a minute detail about their love interest - like how they take their coffee

💜 Saving their preferred seat for them in group gatherings 💜 Taking on more responsibility so their love interest can rest 💜 Noticing when the love interest hasn’t slept well 💜 Allowing their love interest to open up to them in their own time, but making sure they’re always there 💜 Gentle forearm squeezes for reassurance 💜 Picking out a dust speckle from their love interest’s clothing

💜 Gifting flowers based on their love interest’s favorite color 💜 Asking the love interest’s opinion on things that matter to them 💜 Recognizing the signs of emotional breakdowns before the love interest notices themselves 💜 Subtly wrapping a finger around their love interest’s in a crowded room 💜 Only having eyes for their love interest in crowded rooms filled with good-looking people 💜 Noticing and complimenting their love interest’s new item of clothing

💜 Being roped into a dance together, and both keeping their hands a little too appropriately on the other’s body 💜 Leaning slightly into their personal space during a conversation to show they’re interested in what they’re saying 💜 Remembering the things their love interest often forgets, so they always have extra 💜 Sharing a single drink, snack or cigarette 💜 Asking them interesting questions, because they simply want to know

💜 Being the type of person that hates listening to people, but they’d happily listen to their love interest for hours 💜 Singing badly to their love interest to cheer them up 💜 Giving them a little too much physical attention with subtle touches and hugs, but finding themselves unable to stop 💜 Being grumpy, then later apologizing to their love interest for the grumpiness 💜 Saying their love interest’s name all the time, because it just never leaves their mind or their mouth
