Sapphire & Steel have been reassigned!

Big Finish’s acclaimed audio dramas based on the ITV Studios sci-fi/fantasy series Sapphire & Steel are now available to buy as downloads for the first time.

All irregularities will be handled by the forces controlling each dimension. Transuranic, heavy elements may not be used where there is life. Medium atomic weights are available: Gold, Lead, Copper, Jet, Diamond, Radium, Sapphire, Silver and Steel.  Sapphire and Steel have been assigned.

Sapphire & Steel, created by P. J. Hammond, was originally broadcast between 1979 and 1982. It starred Joanna Lumley and David McCallum as a pair of “interdimensional operatives” tasked with protecting the flow of time. Each story would see them take human form as they showed up in a new location, to investigate a dangerous anomaly.

Between May 2005 and August 2008, Big Finish released 15 full-cast audio dramas based on the TV series. The late David Warner took on McCallum’s part to play the stubborn Steel, whilst Susannah Harker slipped into Lumley’s role as Sapphire.

For three of the audio stories, original TV guest star David Collings returned to recreate his performance as Silver. Other notable guest stars in the range included Mark GatissColin BakerSarah DouglasRichard FranklinAngela BruceArthur Bostrom and Louise Jameson

The audio series was only ever released on CD and has been unavailable for more than a decade.

Now, in association with ITV Studios, all three series have been re-released as downloads, giving fans the chance to relisten or indeed discover the adventures for the first time.

Each series comes packaged with a brand-new 30-minute behind-the-scenes featurette, offering an insight into the production of these beloved adventures.

All three series are available to buy at an exclusive early-bird price for the first month; Series One (comprising five stories) is available for just £19.99, Series Two (comprising six stories) is just £24.99, and Series Three (four stories) is £19.99.

Big Finish chairman Jason Haigh-Ellery said: “We are delighted to have reached an agreement with ITV Studios to bring back our Sapphire & Steel releases as downloads. We have received regular requests over the years for it to be made available again, so we’re pleased that a whole new generation of listeners will be able to hear the late, great David Warner as Steel and Susannah Harker as Sapphire.”

Nigel Fairs, who produced the series, added: “I’m absolutely delighted that people will be able to hear our version of Sapphire & Steel again, as it really was a labour of love. Re-imagining such a visual television series for audio was no easy task, but I think my decision to concentrate on the emotional story arcs of the characters who encountered ‘Time’ and our two agents bore some really tasty fruit! Dear David and Susie were the perfect leads, and the recording sessions were amongst the happiest I ever had at Big Finish. Creative times indeed. ‘Roll back time, Sapphire…’”

The four-part stories in each series are:

All three series are available exclusively hereSeries One is available for just £19.99, Series Two for £24.99, and Series Three for £19.99.

All the above prices include the special pre-order discount and are subject to change after general release.

-- Well bugger me!

I wonder if this means I've got access to the downloads now, since I bought the CDs way back when?

*goes to check* No, huh. Guess I'll go on using the rips of the CDs then!

Bit annoyed it says he was "most famous" for The Man from UNCLE and NCIS. To ME he's most famous for Sapphire and Steel and The Man from UNCLE. I didn't even know he'd been on NCIS 'cos it's a US show I've never watched.

Anyway, @thisbluespirit have you seen the sad news?

Three Elements on an assignment seems like overkill, but maybe there’s a reason.

Continuing my new habit of handwriting fic for someone, I sent this ‘Live Action’ fic to @thisbluespirit last week. It’s an unofficial sequel to her Trouble on the Line.

Re-bugle for timezones.

For @thisbluespirit for whom I wrote this bit of flash fic into a greetings card that I was going to simply write a cheery message in. But the Bitch Muse had other ideas! (Why, Bitch Muse? Why?) Almost nothing happens in it and Dr Martha Jones was a most unexpected addition to the proceedings.

Who knew 2021 would turn into the Year of Live Action fic?

[On gold, silver, mercury, platinum, palladium, rhodium, iridium, osmium:] As in their physical properties so in their chemical properties. Their affinities being weaker, (the noble metals) do not present that variety of combinations, belonging to the more common metals, which renders them so extensively useful in the arts; nor are they, in consequence, so necessary and important in the operations of nature. They do not assist in her hands in breaking down rocks and strata into soil, nor do they help man to make that soil productive or to collect for him its products. (Michael Faraday).

Osmium isn’t mentioned in the series.  It’s a rare, hard bluish-white transition metal, found as trace alloys in platinum group metals.  It was discovered in 1803 and has the greatest natural density of any stable element.  It’s part of Group 8 (along with Iron, Ruthenium, and Hassium) but its history is closely linked to platinum.

It’s used for fountain pen nibs and electrical contacts and for other uses requiring extreme durability and hardness, as well as being used for alloys with platinum and iridium.  In compounds, it can be used for staining tissue in microscopy and fingerprinting and for the oxidisation of alkenes.  In the early 20th C it was used as a catalyst in producing ammonia (though cheaper alternatives are now used).  In its pure state, it’s both volatile and toxic.  It’s rare, difficult to work with and expensive.

@pers-books suggested this fascinating element (and fancasting) - sorry it’s taken me so long to get to!  (I very much appreciated it. <3)

As far as I can see, Osmium hasn’t yet been used for fic purposes, but clearly there is some definitely potential here…

*flails and squees!*

Thank you, hon, for doing this!! I’d totally forgotten I’d even suggested it. (Which is as much down to my brain as yours!)

What are some good Sapphire & Steel fics? Do you have any "directory" posts at all that list where you can find them all?

Avatar

I’m afraid I can’t think of any good rec lists - actually, any rec lists at all, come to think of it. So I guess that means I have to make my own! See you under the cut.

Avatar

Nice list!  Also thank you so very much for reccing mine!  (Like most writers, I worry - that I flooded the fandom with the Fic Nobody Wanted, or got boring etc. etc.)  And light your way, by the way, is fantastic!  One of my very favourites out of all the S&S fic, and I’ve enjoyed most of your others (haven’t read some of the crossovers-I-don’t-know yet - all of the ones that I have read have been lovely).

(I’m glad you included Allerleirauh, as we came into the fandom at the same moment, two strangers, but with apparently one shared approach and a love for Silver that had seemed to be seriously lacking in what was available at the time.  I love her Silver/Steel(ish) long Daemons crossover/AU Of Angels & Elementals.  I still miss her very much & stopped writing much S&S for ages, after she left fandom.)

I made a recs list way back in 2012 (the pickings were so much slimmer! but still much shininess) but I believe all the links still work, amazingly, and I have clearly marked out A6 spoilers here.  Some of it still isn’t on AO3, too.

I also have a Original/Other Elements Masterlist - although please note that it is a masterlist, and not a recs list!  (Which is not to say I wouldn’t happily rec an awful lot of it anyway; there is a lot of lovely stuff out there in this fandom and also some straight up amazing things, talking of which, I don’t think you included the fabulous longfic Daisy Bell by nemo_the_everbeing.  (Dark and weird, but then, so is canon.)

I’m sure there are a lot of others missing, but of authors who have written a lot of stuff, I’d add in pretty much anything by kaffyr - pretty sure none of it is spoilery or especially dark, unlike some of the others, and Annariel has written some great fic too, including a few missing Assignments, crossovers and stuff with Silver.  (Both are pretty much gen, even when theoretically shipping.)

(Also, lol, re. Silver/Liz Shaw…  Time to confess, I suppose!!  This was a crack pairing that came about via an icon meme of mine ages ago on LJ, which a few of us then wrote as it seemed like one that could sail, & kind people have written it for me in Fandom Stocking ever since, while Persiflage has a tendency to prompt me for it in memes and things.  I’m not sure whether it’s actually popular, it’s more of a running joke between about four or five of us that has produced some great gift fic along the way. I have no regrets. :-D)

Last, but very important, since you recced The Cat, The Mouse and the Wardrobe - my friend Liadt drew Silver with Sapphire the cat from it here! (It’s adorable.)

Ha! You can always count on me to enable fannish fun and games... And Liz/Silver is a pairing that actually works remarkably well...

Antimony is entirely non-canonical, a soft, grey, shiny metalloid, in the same group as arsenic, notrogen, bismuth, and phosphorus.  It’s been known for millennia, having been used as cometics (as kohl) since ancient times.  Its main centre of production in modern times is China, and it is used chiefly in alloys with tin and lead, in batteries, fire retardant materials, and  TV/computer screens.  Some of its compounds are toxic.

I came up with an Antimony ages ago, as when I first got into S&S, @belantana-blog asked me what ‘element’ Nicola Walker (aka Ruth from Spooks) would be, and after narrowing it down to a few possibilities & knowing she’d have to be a technician, I asked belantana to choose, and she went for Antimony.  I haven’t found another one yet, so just have my fic, cunningly named… Antimony.
