It’s really interesting to me that Toshiro’s powers negatively affecting his grandmother is implied to have started only after Momo left. Did something in her departure trigger his powers to emerge– a subconscious desire to follow her, to become a soul reaper himself? Or were they just counterbalanced by Momo’s own (fire-based!) powers when they were under the same roof?

Honestly I think the first is more likely. I think Momo leaving upended his world and his powers were reacting to his emotional upheaval now that his foster sister/only friend was gone. He was terribly, achingly lonely and anyone who has ever been that lonely knows it can feel like physical pain. I think Hyourinmaru was responding to that loneliness and trying to reach him. Hyourinmaru is, in many ways, the spiritual/physical manifestation of that loneliness and thus they were both so desperate for companionship that his powers were uncontrollable and hurting the person closest to him in a very literal sense.

It’s all really poetic the more you think about it. Incredibly depressing that a child that young has that kind of depth of loneliness and fear inside to the point that it took the form of a literal dragon of ice, but it was also the very power that derived from that loneliness that has lead to him gaining the friends and family he has now. He had to learn to accept his loneliness and embrace that part of himself before he could move on, and that is why his relationship with his zanpakuto spirit seems to be so very companionable compared to other soul reapers. Zanpakuto spirits push them to face their flaws and fears and become their best selves, and Toshiro’s surround isolation in all its forms: through being shunned by society, through losing those he loves, or through being tossed aside and left behind. 

In a practical sense, one could argue that Momo’s fire powers were counteracting the ice, but I think it’s a lot more symbolic than that. Momo was the light in Toshiro’s life. She was the warmth of friendship that he recieved from no one else outside of their grandmother. When she left him behind, she took that warmth with him leaving a cold, gaping chasm behind. So it was less that Momo had overflowing power that was counteracting his, but rather that she was the metaphorical warmth in his life and her leaving left him metaphorically cold and that lead to Hyourinmaru desperately trying to reach him in their mutual distress and his powers lashing out.
