jodipicoult In March 2020 after my co-librettist @timmcdonaldnyc recovered from Covid-19, we decided to chronicle the pandemic while it was unfolding, in real time. Musical theatre felt like the right medium -- because what's theatre but being in our own seats, experiencing the same emotion as everyone else around us (which feels a lot like lockdown, amiright?) We wrote five short stories, each focusing on how the pandemic impacted the lives of five different couples. Then we reached out to five songwriting teams who each took on one of the stories. By August, we had the skeleton of a new musical, and brought on five directors as well. But...shocker...creating theatre during a pandemic is not linear or easy, and there's something very "meta" about workshopping a musical about the pandemic DURING a pandemic. Our workarounds included masking, testing, casting actors who are actual couples, rehearsing in small groups with their own stage managers and music directors, online rehearsals, hybrid rehearsals. Through all of it, I was stuck in NH, desperately trying to listen through crappy Zoom connections. This week, though, we outsmarted Covid. We created a new musical with collaborators who are brilliant and inspiring; with actors who are theatrical royalty (see below: Patti Murin and Colin Donnell, and Kelli O'Hara and Brian Stokes Mitchell...to name only four); with a music team that can make the impossible possible. I am grateful to all of them for choosing to create art in spite of significant obstacles, and I can't wait for you all to see it. (Yes, you'll be able to...and when I have that streaming info it will be shared!) As you can see from the photos, the audience is empty. But only for now. ♥

And she would also like to thank her doctors and nurses and surgeons and the whole staff at @mountsinaipediatrics for fixing her heart.
