throwback to the time one of my friends (who wrote a Pokemon AU where several students could transform into Pokemon at will) said they originally wanted Kieran to be choked by toothpaste boy when they fought in the battle, but to keep the T rating they decided to write onion boy being absolutely decimated in melee combat instead

That's a perfectly understandable desire (personally I believe they will both choke each other at different times) but aww.

It's hard to look at them and not sense that yeah, they're connected by narrative... There was a lovely thread about them that wasn't even shippy how they are tied together and, a heck let's go:

  • Similar color schemes (black, gold, white, purple, blue with additional red from Kieran)
  • Similar movements during battle (scratching head, throwing ball in the air...)
  • Chocolate :) (Kieran is a sweetooth kid, Drayton is an overgrown kid lmao)
  • Same shirt, different colors
  • Dragonite
  • Whole thing with Dragon Cheer as a gift for beating Drayton being the only way to evolve Kieran's ace Hydrapple
  • Also, Kieran giving you Drayton's phone case (keeping in mind that Kieran doesn't have a phone!!)
  • Someone pointed out they both have rainsetters on their teams too (Goodra and Horsea Evo)
  • Their eyes (Drayton has them blank naturally and golden, Kieran later has shine and they're more yellow.... But still both look pretty similar....)

And that's not talking about their interactions..... Like even when you just look at them..... They just fit together.... Nvm if platonic or shippy... Or both... Aaaa....

Drayton can decimate him any type any way if you ask me :3c

Hi! I have a quick question - I was reading through your MadaTobi fic "a thread that won't be cut" and I noticed you had a line in the last chapter about Hashirama have Mokuton induced tension headaches as a child. I'm currently writing a Mokuton!Sakura fic, and I was wondering if you would mind sharing headcanons? Thanks!

Avatar

I don’t know if I have headcanons per se, but I have been thinking a lot about the Mokuton for another fic that I haven’t yet published.  So, my unorganized thoughts, such as they are:

  1. The Mokuton is sui generis.  Hashirama is the first person to have the ability - the Sage of the Six Paths and his kids don’t have it, nor do the any of the families associated with Kaguya and her get.  Given the fact that the Tailed Beasts are a corrupted product of Kaguya’s consumption of the God Tree (emphasis on the tree), and that Sage abilities are specifically linked to tapping into ambient Nature chakra, I suspect that the Mokuton is a pure expression of the energy of the world, funnelled into one person, untainted by celestial energy.
  2. So Hashirama has this amazingly OP ability…and he has to learn everything from scratch.  That would be hard enough, but it’s also clear that the Mokuton is an expression of the user’s will.  Hashirama’s Mokuton was amazingly intricately detailed in comparison to all the other subsequent users.  Yamato was the best, obviously, but Danzo had nearly as long to master it and was barely able to make simple constructs.  Obito’s main use of it was as unconscious life support.  I know the anime states that Yamato had a scroll to learn from, but that’s not clear in the manga, and either way, we do see that he struggled with mastering his abilities.
  3. Given that Hashirama was a really unparalleled, brilliant man, he’d still have to think of all his jutsu himself.  It would take years upon years of practice, and intense mental focus.  Handsigns only aid ninja in molding their chakra (which is why stronger ninja needed fewer hand signs for the same technique).  I suspect the hand signs are actually a memetic device to help people mold their chakra in the correct way.  Either way, Hashirama would have to do extensive work just visualizing how the jutsu would work and then experimenting to make his theory reality.  Even with his brother and wife assisting him (and I’m sure they did - instinct only goes so far, and they would have the theoretical background to help him best, given their work with seals), it would be exhausting, dangerous work.
  4. Dangerous, you might ask?  Well, Danzo did have to sever his arm to prevent it from turning him into a tree; additionally, channeling that much nature chakra could very well exhaust your cells (thus, you know, killing you). All the other users, save for Yamato, had serious, serious issues with the tissue mutating (*cough*hashiboob*cough*).  The Zetsu (if I’m remembering correctly) are basically people mutated by the God Tree into sentient Venus fly-traps.  There is great risk in using the Mokuton, and I suspect part of what made Hashirama (and Yamato) so good was their straight up chakra control, which would have made it far easier to modulate the nature release.  Additionally, the Mokuton seems to have a really low activation barrier.  It’s not like the Sharingan, which requires quite a lot of work to activate.  Like a tree, it wants to grow, and the user appears to need to consciously hold themselves back from using it, which is very different from how bloodline limits are presented in the rest of the series - which makes sense, because Mokuton users appear to be acting more as a channel for chakra than a reservoir.

In short, the Mokuton is a marvelous, dangerous ability, made more complicated by the fact that there would be few training tools to assist the novice.  You can do almost anything with it - including turn yourself into a tree accidentally.  Not a great skill for a kid to have access to, but with supervision and a great deal of focus, mastery could be obtained.  But you’d have a hell of a lot of headaches growing up, and I do wonder about the risk of either intensive chakra exhaustion and/or accidental body modification.

Anyway, this is just what I’ve considered while working through my own stories.  Hopefully my thoughts it will be helpful for your own!

(PS: just started reading “The Company of Trees”, finding it ace so far.  What a great story!)

Imagine: fluffy KagaDan raising baby Shisui together

ROOT still exists, but it's much more humanly and Hokage-approved, Danzo is still in power about it and baby Shisui becomes ROOT's little prince because Danzo keeps bringing him to the HQ whenever Kagami's on a mission and every single ROOT operative loves this little troublemaker

Kagami makes sure that everything's as legal as it should be, and works together with the Yamanaka clan to make sure that the operatives always have someone to talk about what they see/do on missions, just like he makes sure happens with ANBU

Sakumo and the Sannin are the weird uncles/aunt that Shisui learns to grow up around, often finding himself meeting smol Kakashi because of that

Hiruzen is glad that they're all happy, but he swears that he gets a gray hair every time Shisui does some prank, especially because no ANBU nor ROOT can ever catch him afterwards

He's so happy when he passes the hat onto Minato because now everything's his problem to deal with and Hiruzen can just relax. Biwako calls him a big dramatic whiny baby but Hiruzen doesn't care and is determined to enjoy his hard-earned retirement

Gosh, yes I love this, in a thousand ways and I am sure @uchihashisui-kun will appreciate it as much ❤️.

Smol Shisui just having all of root wrapped around his finger and everyone trying to always be Shisui's best friend of the week. Because then they get babysitting duty from Danzō :D .

It's a peaceful and quiet life, Shisui grows up sheltered and together with Danzō, Kagami is also able to find a solution for the conflict between Uchiha and the Hokage. It's such a sweet and heartfelt au, I love it <3.

Early 2000′s Internet Fandom Gothic

  • Someone has been leaving increasingly bizarre messages on your guestbook.
  • You get a favorite on one of your drawings featuring a character’s death. You go to thank them, but have second thoughts when you see their page consists only of a bloated gallery of faves that are all about that one character dying.
  • Just who else is a sock puppet of that BNF?
  • Your favorite fansite still hasn’t come back from hiatus. Rumors swirl on the forums of a different site that the webmistress died, the broken banner on her splash page her online epitaph.
  • You swear you’ve read this songfic set to My Immortal before, but it’s the most recent submission. You couldn’t have.
  • Your computer doesn’t support Japanese characters but that doesn’t stop you from trying to navigate your fandom’s doujin circles. You somehow stumble onto a page dedicated to lovingly-rendered anatomical dissections of every character.
  • Your favorite fanfiction is getting progressively weirder and more incoherent with every update. You hope the author is okay.
  • You get the feeling you shared this positive fanart of a female character with the wrong crowd.
  • There’s a new batch of icons posted on one of your LJ communities! None of them are loading. Everybody else is commenting on them; why are you the only one who can’t see them?
  • You make a new friend on a forum, and you exchange AIM handles. After a few days of chatting, she begins to tell you about her experiences in something called “the Astral Plane”.
  • This video is taking an eternity to buffer.
  • DxHxR citrus, PWP, H/C, NC, CBT, WS, M/M, M/M/M, WAFF ^_^ WIP please R&R!!!
  • As you finally turn out the light and close your eyes to go to sleep, you swear you can hear it coming from outside: the dial-up noise.

I think the best part about this is it’s not even really meme-ified, this was LITERALLY what fandom was like.

That’s exactly what I was going to say. People who didn’t experience this probably think it sounds bizarre. No, that’s basically what it was like. Early internet fandom was a strange place.

I have a feeling that the ‘Astral Plane’ story was just someone encountering a fan of Slayers for the first time. And also roleplaying.
