Joel Miller / Negan Smith Comparisons

I keep seeing people making comparisons between Joel Miller and Rick Grimes, but honestly, I always thought with their backgrounds Joel has so much more in common with Negan. I’m not saying they are completely alike because they aren’t, but looking at the timelines of their stories they are very similar. They both lost the person they loved the most at the beginning of their apocalypses. It drove them both to join groups that took people’s things where they killed innocent people. They were both feared and considered shitty people. This is mentioned multiple times in the game by people like Bill, Tess, Tommy, etc. Tess telling Joel they are shitty people. The people in the town being scared of Joel. Tommy saying he had nightmares for years about the things that Joel made them to do in order to survive. Bill saying normal people scare him and Joel should know that better than anyone. Joel saying he was part of groups like the one that attacked him and Ellie, making it clear to the fact he killed innocent people. They both were strong and feared by many. Both of their redemption arcs were them getting close to a young girl(s) in need of a father figure. Now you don’t have to agree with me, that’s fine. But there are seriously so many similarities and they are both my two favorite characters. I probably liked Negan more because he did remind me of a smartass Joel. I definitely have a thing for morally gray characters. That’s for sure. The biggest difference between the two (for me) is that Joel was the protagonist and started his story off with his redemption (so to speak) and Negan came in as an antagonist and his story took time to progress. So yeah, I see more similarities in Joel/Negan than I do in Joel/Rick. If you don’t agree with me, please avoid attacking me as it’s just my opinion.

“I’m trying, Lucille!” Negan yelled, running a hand over his face.

“Not hard enough,” she spat back.

This had become the norm. Negan would get home from work and Lucille would nitpick every little thing he was doing wrong. It had been like this for so long that he had gotten used to it. He didn’t know what happened in his marriage that caused this abrupt shift, but he was tired. He was exhausted.

“Nothing I do will ever be enough, will it?”

Lucille crossed her arms over her chest. “Seems like it.”

Since the bar, you and Negan were having sex pretty frequently. Though, you made sure not to make the same mistake as before regarding having sex at the gym or in his office. This time, you were more careful and even set boundaries for yourself. However, the more you continued to sleep with Negan, the harder it was for you to separate your feelings. While the sex was obviously amazing, you yearned to stay in his arms, to fall asleep next to him, to wake up the following morning in his bed. It was tough to just gather your things after having sex or kicking him out, depending on the location of your trysts. You wondered if it bothered Negan and if it did, he did a great job at hiding it.

“So…” Taylor said, putting her shoes on. She had been gone most of the week, spending more and more time with Charlie. “You and Negan? Just sex?”

“That’s all it is… You keep asking me and the answer hasn’t changed.”

He wanted you badly and as he watched your lips wrap around his fingers, he growled, feeling his lower half throb. You were teasing him. In public. In front of his friends. In front of Rick, whom you were meeting with at the end of the week.

“Let’s get out of here,” Negan heard you say, the feel of your lips brushing against his just making him harder. He glanced down at your cleavage and growled, his eyes darkening.

Negan was sulking after last night. He couldn’t bring himself up to even say that he was falling in love with you. He wasn’t even sure you would believe him, but he needed to win you back. He needed you. It had been the wake-up call he needed to realize that this was no longer just a relationship about sex. He genuinely adored you and as he learned more and more about you, he found himself in awe of the person that you were. To him, it was like a breath of fresh air, like someone had pulled him out of this dark pit he was in and showed him what it was like to love and be loved again.

It scared the shit out of him, but he wanted more. You had given him hope that he was still capable of loving and being loved after Lucille died.
