“You must get asked that a lot,” Isak says. “‘What are we?’” Even bites his lip. “They do ask me that.” “What do you answer?” “I don’t usually.” The boat rocks again as Isak squints. “What would you answer now if I asked you?” “Are you asking me seriously this time?” “Yeah,” Isak says, his mouth staying slightly open in a way that feels both challenging and vulnerable. Even’s brain floods with images, playing like a reel of unused footage. Moments where Isak was at the piano smiling to himself, in that twin bed, his back to Even, his hand making a bunny shape. His eyes in the sun. His sharp words, the soft ones. Yelling when they got wet in the rain. Racing on his bike. His arms around Even. His laughter. His lips close. The heat of his secret room. Reaching on his tiptoes for that key. Each image is blurry and out of focus. Useless to the story, it would never sell, but priceless to Even. To him, they’re the best parts. Isak and the things only Even saw. Each moment. Belonging to him.
