Fuck it, adding on: This is why it's frustrating to see criminal defense lawyers getting a bad rep.

The right to a fair trial is a human right. In practice, a fair trial necessitates a lawyer. This means that even if somebody committed the worst crimes you could possibly imagine, they still deserve a lawyer.

Somebody has to defend them as a matter of human rights. As one of my professors said, way back in my first semester at uni: "Everybody deserves to have somebody in their corner."

nb the source of criminal defense attorneys getting a bad rep is always, always copaganda. same with the incredibly bullshit narrative of “if you didn’t do anything wrong then why do you need a lawyer?” the purpose of both these terrible stupid pro-cop arguments are to deny you your legal rights.

On twitter I’m seeing dozens of threads from Black activists warning people against burnout, giving all sorts of useful tips about preventing and managing it for the sake of a long-term, sustainable effort.

On tumblr I’m seeing a hell of a lot of young white kids yelling at anyone who actually follows those steps, and acting like burnout is a moral falling rather than a well-proven psychological phenomenon.

Be careful who you get your information from. Don’t let guilt lead you to make choices that will harm both you and the movement.

I’m going to reblog this again since I see more individuals are inquiring about burnout prevention tips in the notes and it’s why I sought out this resource. I hope it helps you!

I keep thinking about how there is a trend of people being like "It's not my responsibility to educate you" or "conservatives aren't worth arguing with" and like that is true in many cases! but if you are someone with privilege and you aren't putting yourself in danger by it, I think we should at least try to have hard conversations with these kinds of people if they are in our familial or social circles instead of just cutting them off out of frustration. Like don't waste all your time trying to change someone's mind, and some people really are too far gone / maybe better to cut off, but like. If you have some kind of relationship with them you of all people might be able to point out the cracks in their thinking and plant a seed that combats the bad propaganda. I think privileged people who grew up in bubbles that were more progressive don't understand the kinds of brainwashing that occur in more conservative bubbles. Their sense of knowledge and identity is built upon lies spread by the ruling class / white supremacists and there's a good amount of people who are genuinely ignorant, in denial, and/or have cognitive dissonance about it. Because while it's great to surround yourself with like-minded people, these other people still exist in our communities and I would like to try to bring them to our side for our sake and theirs.
